Using the actual job as a rent-a-girlfriend as a basis would have been better if the story was tragic in nature. You have a NEET who feels crushed by society with few (or no) friends, who wants to feel a shred of what the MCs in his favorite romance animes feel, so he rents a girl friend. While the date goes well, he's aware it's all a sham, but he's just so desperate for human warmth, even if it is fake, that he can't stop renting girlfriends. He rotates through girls, until he's back with the one he started with. Girl #1 recognizes this, and that's where the two can have a real conversation. She asks him why he's spending so much money (I assume this isn't a cheap service), he asks her how she got into this business, and things go from there. Maybe they decide to be friends and help each other become better people.

Today, on the Sky is Blue show, "Rent-a-Girlfriend Sucks" The only good thing about this manga was the movie filming arc, Kazuya bursting into Chizuru's grandma's room with the projector to let her watch the movie in her last breath was honestly great writing, as this selfish and whimpering shrimp took a manly decision for the sake of someone else for the first time in his life without expecting anything in return! And then he took 17 steps back immediately afterwards and never recovered!

He just wanted to support someone who had a dream and give their family peace of mind because that is what he COULD do for them! He learned to negotiate, edit videos, make connections in the film industry and did all sorts of odd jobs to make sure production would go smoothly. That arc had Kazuya at his best learning to be a proper working adult and giving Chizuru a proper reason to fall for him. After all, not only did he help her when she needed it the most, he also became someone better because of that experience. A good author would have kept that growth and expanded on it, making their dynamic change and their relationship progress. But I guess the author got jealous that his girlfriend was going to date that beta male, so he made Kazuya go back to how bad he was at the beginning of the story and made him get a boner from imagining her getting railed by another man with a funny hat.

One of my many pet peeves with this series is that we get a microscopic look into Kazuya's mind. Like we are forced to have a microscopic look of how much of a sex craved monster Kazuya is and I do not feel comfortable with it. Every single fan service moment in both the anime and manga has an even worse implication as we are given a front row seat to how he sees the world.

Alright, I don't like this show anymore, but you grossly misrepresented a few things about the premise. First off, you completely skipped over Chizuru's grandmother. She's a part of why Chizuru is continuing to do this, as she's afraid of her grandmother finding out that she's doing Rental Girlfriend services, and her grandmother is at the same hospital, and friends with Kazuya's grandmother at that. Chizuru got caught on the job, and she believes that she has to keep the lie going for fear of disappointing her grandmother. Second, your point about the coincidence of attending the same college. Coincidences at the start of a story are perfectly acceptable. Heck, even a number of coincidences are acceptable. Look at A New Hope or the original The Last of Us. Both of those begin with multiple coincidences set to get Luke and Joel involved in the conflict. I'd say Rent a Girlfriend can get away with the number of coincidences surrounding the two leads in its very first episode. I really don't want to have to defend this series, as it went off the rails for me in season 2, but these specific points of the video rather irked me.

Kazuya is one of those main characters in anime that somehow feels like a side character, I could argue that the girls are the main cast and people would undeniably agree with me because of how terrible this character is, the creators really had to make one of the most irredeemable anime characters of all time that watching this guy progress into a better person feels like waiting for decades just for new things to happen, so yeah this character is the embodiment of L behavior, you could throw "fatherless behavior" and it would still fit the theme of this character in general, that's how bad Kazuya is..

I have never liked using the logic of "it's anime" because it undermines the myriad of actually good anime while giving shit like this a cop-out. Imo Rent A Girlfriend wouldn't be as bad if so much shit didn't just happen because plot and if the service was focused on more. Instead it's only really used to develop Kazuya's cuckold fetish. And while a lot of interesting developments can be done with that(seriously I've seen ntr hentai with better writing), nothing is done with beyond "plot" and mellow drama. The entire series is carried by the cute girls and seeing how far Kazuya can spiral downard.

I'll be honest, I think when it comes to western media being cringe or racist or sexist, I actually can laugh with it, but when it comes to stuff like an anime dealing with romance like it's this thing you just acquire or with a mc that is a "self-insert, perverted loser" (looking at you, Rent-a-Girlfriend, GLARING at you, Highschool DxD), I just can't. I can't even laugh at it because it just triggers me for some reason; it's not even a rational anger, it feels like it comes from my gut. Dunno why, might have to do with me being at early twenties and never having had a relationship out of a mix of shyness and lack of social skills. Also, I'm half-lacking a life. Maybe I just don't gel well with romantic drama, though; I much prefer when it's wholesome and the cracks come from character flaws that hinder the relationship, but the interactions between both parties solve said flaws by exposing them and treating them. Anyway, sorry if I'm not watching this in full, Jack. The moment you started talking about the mc, I just felt my gut turning inside me with the wish to groan. You still have my like and I'm still subbed. Keep it up, my guy, cheers.

The entire point of the anime is that their love is the product of an unfortunate situation brought about by the oppressive nature of Japanese society.I feel that many people do not understand the cultural context of this anime. I feel like everyone approaches this from a Western individualistic perspective. People forget that Japan is a collectivist society that does not believe in the autonomy of the individual. So, when it comes to the rent-a-girlfriend girl dating the main character, she really does not have a choice. Due to the strict rules forced upon her by Japanese society, she feels an obligation to date the main character due to the grandma's wishes. In Japanese culture, it is basically required that you OBEY YOUR ELDERS. I imagine that this scenario is pretty common in Japan, though I am not totally sure. It adds to the unfortunate nature of the story, and comments on the harmful nature of Japanese culture. The entire point of the anime is that their love is the product of an unfortunate situation brought about by the oppressive nature of Japanese society.

i would like to also say that I do not condone the actions of the main character. However, it is pretty common for Japanese boys to lose social skills because of how ridiculously rigorous the Japanese education system is. It is possible that the main character did not have time to learn social skills due to being inside studying all the time. This further points to my conclusion that this anime is an analysis of japans rapidly deteriorating society.

The protagonist is definitely the center of everything wrong with this. He is basically a static hentai protagonist being restrained by the usually rules of anime. Characters in anime typically don’t have realistic personalities, but even here I fail to see how all these girls like him so much.
