The biggest issue I have with these romances is that very, very, very rarely do they address how toxic the relationships are. I find it ridiculous how lots of decent comics get canned or overly censored over curse words or blood, yet these comics that teach people that it's okay to stalk people, be in a toxic and abusive relationship and have no consequences for these actions can get past these companies so easily. But that's probably because helicopter parents are more likely to buy this garbage than decent comics because they don't want their precious golden child to see a drop of blood or curse words.

Seeing the "ugly fat character". Then immediately my mind went. "What if he's a simple salary man, he went to the bar to have a couple of drinks and go back home. But of course he sees the generic protagonist in that downed mood look. Decided to chat a bit and see what's wrong. Then spiral to the ex husband being treated like the creepy stalker as he is as an antagonist while we have wholesome friendship between not that handsome and little old salary man and a young beautiful celebrity." In a way the stalking would make more sense if it was about the influence of the media. Like they could portray a very media related relationship, to the point where they would do anything for the attention. That could work as a reasson why he left her, it could be a excuse that she felt from the eyes of the media. Sothat would make him to find someone more famous to date because he may become less famous if he stayed. It could be from different reassons: His agent would force him to do it, since he had falled lower on the famous people scale as well. Or he was that shallow and did it for his image. Or he was the one that was getting more drama for the media. Or maybe that he took the blame for something that she did to make her less famous. I mean see? You can elaborate on that further. And it can even be a story around it that maybe would make it interesting. Maybe adding some twists to decive the public for the real reasson why he is stalking her or why he left to make it more interesting. Idk.

As a Korean guy who used to read webtoons, I must say you're right about current webtoons being literal cookie cutters Back in 2012, webtoon was something more like a platform for every genre, from comedy to badass action. But as time passed, many authors left the platform, or lost their charms due to dragging their own works to oblivion And now these kinds of trash-taste romance webtoons are what we only get. Platforms are only advertising these kinds of comics to the public, which makes more authors to create more cookie cutter romance. To target their demographics, either immature/young female readers, or ladies in their 30s who are desperate for any kind of love relationship Hell, old school Korean webtoon fans hate these too. They know what made webtoons so entertaining in the early days, so seeing these cookie cutter comics only make them cringe

I now use Webtoons as only a recommendations list. If I see something I like I subscribe and go read it somewhere else. It's also frustrating as it's grown increasingly woke so that anyone who writes about gay or trans characters are whatever gets pushed to the very forefront, while actually good works get shoved to the back because they're not "progressive enough". Like I don't care what you identify as or whatever, and good on you for making art, but the business policy of Webtoons is shameful that they would use this propaganda to promote stuff.

The eternal shame to this story is, there are women who want exactly this kind of reaction from their man in real life. I've seen TikToks of women saying almost word for word, "If I block you, you' make another account and try again." These women WANT the man to be OBSESSED over them. They want them to show up at their house, their job, if they reject/block them. She wants bro to be literal stalkers, and I'm not entirely sure if it's solely for the ego boost, or they just want the man to be incapable of living without her before she forgives him for making her that mad.

i second that. as an artist i can say that contrast always matters. for your "cute" character to look cute, you cant have everyone else be at the exact same level of maximum cuteness . your brain is seeing the story from the context of the visuals and world so when it sees cuteness everywhere instead of just the character that is supposed to be extra "cute" then all of your words loose weight. calling someone in the story "ugly" wont matter either since they already look the same as the other characters. it also creates a subtle uncanny effect of samyness and makes your work much less memrable . in general contrast can always spice up artworks, contrast of tone , contrast of color pallate, contrast of bodytypes and character designs as well as contrast of backgrounds. allow uglyness and maturity into your work, dont let things happen with no conflict or struggle or change, and dont create conflict because you want conflict where there would be non either. it all boils down to how much discipline you have as the artist or writer to do things you may not enjoy to achieve a higher quality work with realistic imperfections within the context of the art or story .

I think the way they portray "ugly" people can also be a reflection of how korean society treats unattractive people or people who dont fit the kpop idol image. I've worked in this industry and actually been able to sustain myself off it, but it's so plastic and exploitative I ended up leaving after a bit mor than a year. In the past, I feel like webcomics were a breath of fresh air because those who made them did so out of genuine passion/creativity, but as with everything related to art lately, it has devolved into a machine that mass-produces low quality, low effort cash grabs no one will care about or remember in a few months' time. To be an artist is no dream job. Unless, as though it is with everything, you know the right people/are extremely lucky, that idea you've been working on your whole life may go nowhere. No matter how amazing you think it is, something very similar has been done before, but I think that's the key phrase--it's not exactly the same. It'll never be, because we're all individuals, and even if we share 99% of our DNA, 1% is different, and even if we all wake up to work and dream and then go back to sleep, our thoughts and experiences are unique. The thing is, the industry really doubles down on that 99%. It'll try its very best to tell you your idea isn't worth sharing because 'it's been done before and better' so you're better off doing what's profittable. It tells you to stop trying because success is not what makes you happy but what makes you money, makes THEM money. Thus, your art quirks get turned into flaws, your ideas systematically withered, until one day you end up with toxic love story no.869464, thinking you've made it as though you're any better than a robot assembling parts at a factory. It's vile, but it happens to a lot of people. Some of them say they just want the money, that they're doing it because it's 'fun', yet almost invariably, they'll have that one idea that got them there in the first place and which they try hard to forget, writing it off as 'childish' or 'too out there' or 'not good enough'. Do they really think that, or are they echoing somebody else? Is that echo reflected in those soulless comics meant to be consumed and then forgotten like fast food? Sometimes I remember an acquaintance whose dream project involved cyborg girls fighting in a steampunk setting, who'd endlessly doodle his characters and rant to a group of small aspiring artists at 4 am about their newest idea (you bet I muted that dumb group chat). He's successful enough to do this full time and constantly brags about buying this or that, but his story has yet to see the light of day. Instead, he mass produces isekai comics full of everything you've seen before, and nothing else. No longer does he talk about his own work, and he usually really dislikes hen people do, saying it brings him unpleasant experiences. The last time I dared to ask about the cyborg story, he just told me it didn't matter anymore. Thing is, if your first story fails to hit it big, your second might, or your third, and so on and so on. It's only if you stop that it becomes impossible to succeed despite being told you're not good enough, because you are. It's depressing to see so many ideas get shelved in favor of... this... and it makes me feel for the authors. Some of these might be popular for some time, but they will be forgotten. How many people can unironically say shit like this is their favorite comic if they're older than 14 and/or read more than four books a year? The things people remember are those childish, out there, not good enough ideas that made it through the machine. Unironically, I think the hardest part of doing this for a living is not achieving visibility, but staying you. It's still a combination of luck, hard effort and connections, but any dumbass can ctrl+v an idea that's been proven time and time again to make money. At this point, it wouldn't surprise me if an AI made the script and underpaid, overexploited young artists did the rest. It's all about fitting as many square pegs into a round hole as possible, until the edges eventually erode. Sorry this got so long x_x

Basically, it's one thing to read or watch these relationships and live vicariously through the characters, but it's another to idealize it and seek it for oneself. If someone really likes the idea of one's ex coming back for them where "safe drama" takes place (that is, the drama that isn't real), then by all means one can enjoy this. On the other hand, one shouldn't think of this as some sort of ideal and expect this to play out in the real world.

That's cool, I actually made a story similar about it. (Although there's a chance they'd eventually get together, who knows) but my two characters are just hanging out realizing after their past break up how well the others doing and finally having closure and maturing from the past. The story ends with the female lead finally able to let go of the past and not pressure herself to fulfill her father's position rather to just do her job cause she likes to and fixes her toxic trait of blaming others just cause she was insecure. As for the male lead he grows from pampering and following the female lead's wishes to finally doing things he wants and had a goal in life abroad. The two had wholesome conversation as friends for the next 2-3 years ^^ sorry, it's a bit long :'vv

Actually it really is a thing in South Korea for the idols, especially the female idols, to be subjected to extreme diets to maintain the slim physique. It’s not a plot line to annoy the more knowledgeable and “normalise” it for impressionable people besides girls, it’s technically… the culture of South Korean idols if you can call that a culture. I once happened across one of those Korean reality shows (my mother is sadly a rabid consumer of certain reality shows and sometimes when there’s nothing better to watch, I have to sit through that.) They did show a certain idol having her meals… a disposable cupful (9oz) of vegetable, half a disposable cupful (roughly 4.5oz) of chicken, and practically nothing else. There’s no carbs. All of that she ate is boiled and steamed. No sauce whatsoever. If there’s a drink its water or those “miracle drinks” where it “helps with slimming down” and what not. Some days they literally just drink a protein shake and call that “a meal”. There’s even one who just eats a very small tub of the plainest yoghurt and a banana and that’s her meal for you. She said her agency actually watches what each girl eats and weighs them routinely. It’s actually a very weird life for South Korean idols, but for them it’s “we’re willing to sacrifice living a normal life for the honourable life of being an idol”. (Also you did your best pronouncing the names really, you did indeed have an almost accurate pronunciation of the ex’s name as “Yun-Jay” While the generic female’s name is pronounced as “E-oon-Soul”)

it made me cringe that it was obvious the dude was not being considerate of the cultural differences. like yeah the romance stuff is cringe, but it's no different than how old italian or spanish soap operas liked to ham it up because at the end of the day, it's all about entertainment, not actually getting real life advice out of the stuff. also it's not like japan is free of these things either- it's just that they're not as mainstream in the global market. lots of light novels are power fantasies with equally problematic ideas but it's not meant to be a serious reflection of the culture.

Romance webtoon that takes place in fantasy setting are usually worse. Example: Abandoned Empress: ML physically and mentally abused the female protagonist, and eventually killed her in her first life. But don't worry, he's a changed person in the 2nd timeline due to changing circumstances and he's actually not in control of himself due to manipulation and drugs. And they become lovers again. Personally why I also don't like romances is that that the people in the story are always upper middle class or more. Which is fine but they are really over represented in those stories. Personally I would like to see a romance about 2 working class people that both emotionally hurt and the story is about them helping each other. Also all the men in romance stories are factory built pretty boy. What wrong with having a rugged handsome Male lead why do they need to be carved by God himself everytime they all look the same. Then again I wouldn't consider myself handsome but being handsome isn't all to getting love there needs to be a personality behind the pretty face and good body. But no that would take originality is to hard for people today. Also I have had a crush on a girl but she made it clear she wasn't into me romantically and I haven't gone across the line she drew and I have moved on for the most part.

I have read like, ten slice of life coffee shop aus of THE ACTUAL SAME CHARACTERS written by different people and saved all of them...and yeah, I like some better than others, but I still LIKE them all. So just remember aspiring comic artists, if you're worried someone has done your concept before...don't. We like having more of what we like. People make Spotify playlists filled with songs from one genre because, amazingly, they like it. So remember, if you have an idea and think you can make it fun and interesting DO it.

This is going to sound like I'm shilling for a manhwa, but that's okay because I think more people need to hear about it. "Another Typical Fantasy Romance". It's almost as if it specifically addresses all the problems you talked about. The male lead is not traditionally handsome. Unlike the soft and serene look a lot go for, he's rugged, strong and heavily scarred. People are not stupid. They're emotionally mature and aware of how others feel. If someone acts like a stupid romance character, they get their shit kicked in like they would in real life. The best part is the relationship between the leads Pellus and Lithera is the healthiest relationship I've seen even including western media. They talk about their problems, set clear boundaries that are respected, and have a clear line of progression in their relationship. Nothing feels contrived or hamfisted. There's a lot more to it, but these are the highlights in my opinion. Again, I know I sound like an add, but it seems relevant considering the video.

To be fair, all media platforms(with a few exceptions) have piles of trash with a few gems. The truth is that webtoon targets female audiences vs say Shonen Jump which targets males. 95% of shonens follow the same damn tropes too. And are also terribly written, but its socially acceptable for them to be trash, but its not socially acceptable for art targeting women to be trash. Its a weird double standard. People want women stories to be more like guy stories, then they shit on them if the story is to much like a guys story. It really feels like a damned if you do damned if you dont situation. Now please understand, i do recognize that most of these stories are trash, and follow stupid tropes, but i dont understand why so much hatred goes towards the womens stories and way less hatred goes to male stories for almost identical crimes. As an example of 'good' stories that are ridiculously predictable, i was able to predict what would happen entire episodes before it did in My Hero Academia. It follows every shonen trope ever, i can even predict when the damn emotional violin is going to start playing. So i guess theres no real point to this comment, its more of a question, why are people so against women enjoying trashy stories that appeal to them? And these stories do appeal to them, Webtoon is making bank. And the argument of 'its giving women unrealistic expectations' is bull, tell that to all the harem/isekai shows. Also, im not saying dont keep tearing trashy stories apart, thats fun. Im just confused by this aspect of society is all. :) Also keep up the great work!!!!

I created my own vocabulary because I'm tired of people using the phrase ''love triangle'' just because there are 3 people involved. It's more complicated than that. 1) An actual love triangle. When person A is in love with person B but B is in love with person C but C is in love with A. (It can go on for a whole alphabet and all the shapes. Then it would've been a square and so on.) 2) A (cute) angle. When a person can't decide between two possible partners. Those two don't even have to know about each other existence. Usually, the two options are vastly different in terms of their looks, personality, interests, and what the potential relationship dynamic may be like, but they're both objectively good. Just different. 3) A line with a breaking point in the middle. (That's the most popular and what most people mean by ''love triangles''.) Two people are fighting over a person. Depending on the version the person in the middle may try to resolve the conflict by picking the better option, clearly stating whether they are friends or something more, or telling both wannabe lovers to leave. But more often than not the person in the middle is just standing by as the two are fighting, not being able to make up her/his mind, going back and forth, pulling the two simps by their collars. It makes you completely lose any sympathy for this toxic and idiotic character. Besides, most of the time it's pretty obvious who is the endgame so it just feels like a waste of time. It's always A) the first one/main one/more important one, or B) the best friend that was right in front of the MC but didn't notice until now because they're ''just friends''.

Wow, Jack was able to get his first sponsor! Congratulations man! Hopefully you would be able to have more sponsors in the future, and not need to rely solely on YTs generosity. Amazing ad read too, btw. Really appreciated the segment of you drawing your avatar, it adds a lot of power to the read. And..... oh, do I suppose to say something about the comic too? Well, eh.......... This is a perfect example of why teens can't write good romance for other teens to read to save their life. The story (and the artstyle too, I must add), rely way too heavily on cliche, with the plot being as contrived as it can possibly go. Even the title is rather uninspired, and doesn't really invokes interest for me to read the story. it's all just a bland forgettable meh of a comic all around, too naïve to interest wine moms to read it, and too troupe heavy to offer anything innovative for the romance obsessed young girls. So is there any surprise that the sponsor ad read got more of my interest and excitement in this video than the main focus webtoon comic itself?

Korea has a high stalking and femicide issue. Webtoons are a reflection of their society and possibly coping and hoping to see the good in their situation. Escaping to a different time, that seems to be better because it’s a different setting but is all the same dynamics of the real world. It’s all a lie and a facade, but no webtoon is going to revolutionize Korea, so you just make the best with what you got

adding to his points as an artist i can say that contrast always matters. for your "cute" character to look cute, you cant have everyone else be at the exact same level of maximum cuteness . your brain is seeing the story from the context of the visuals and world so when it sees cuteness everywhere instead of just the character that is supposed to be extra "cute" then all of your words loose weight. calling someone in the story "ugly" wont matter either since they already look the same as the other characters. it also creates a subtle uncanny effect of samyness and makes your work much less memrable . in general contrast can always spice up artworks, contrast of tone , contrast of color pallate, contrast of bodytypes and character designs as well as contrast of backgrounds. allow uglyness and maturity into your work, dont let things happen with no conflict or struggle or change, and dont create conflict because you want conflict where there would be non either. it all boils down to how much discipline you have as the artist or writer to do things you may not get gratification from to achieve a higher quality work with realistic imperfections within the context of the art or story .

One of these days, I'd like to see a webtoon parody this genre of creepy romantic behavior guised as something it's not, where the author understands that behavior like this isn't acceptable, questioning the moral scapegoats and challenging the status quo. It could be interesting and also show to the teenagers who read this stuff that romanticizing this kind of generic, bare minimum, creepy behavior is not okay. How interesting would it be if a Webtoon, or any piece of media, had a less conventionally attractive male or female lead try and woo the romantic lead but time and time again, he/she keeps rejecting them due to their looks and when the MC tries other ways to impress them, their actions are misunderstood by the creepy usually handsome generic male/female lead and the altercation ensues where the MC is portrayed as the bad guy even though they were just trying to flirt or something. I don't know if any piece of media has done that yet to my knowledge but framing a story like that where the lead realizes that their romantic interest is not who they think they are would be quite unique in my opinion. A story that showcases the creepy and toxic nature of these stereotypical pretty men in a negative light and having the MC learn to overcome their flaws, move past the surface level melodrama and find someone who actually views them as a person and not a piece of meat, would be something fun to read. If anyone knows a story like that, I'd be interested to read it. Loved the video BLJ, keep up the good work and I can't wait to see future videos on the Moral Scapegoat.

I swear, if you're a typa guy who interested in reading novels/watch TV shows, you'd have a field day scouting the vast sea of TERRIBLE romance drama from Malaysian authors. The tropes for the past few years are predictable; love-triangles, son/daughter of a CEO, crush on cousin (yup, there's one), parents don't approve your dates, and many more. When I watch K-dramas they're fine, at least the ones where the romance is just sub-plot.

And this is a big reason to why romance is my least favorite genre of storytelling, because when it's botched, it looks something like this comic 😒😒😒 Edit: Also, if unrequited love was on the list, I wonder how BlackLightJack feels about Hanahaki Disease. You know? That fictional disease, popularized mainly in fanfictions, where the person who is feeling unrequited love starts having their crush's favorite flower grow inside their lungs and if the crush doesn't return their feelings, they die? It was a pretty popular fanfic trope at one point, I don't really see it used nowadays so I guess it fell out of popularity with fanfic writers

if u think weebtoon has bad shit, LET ME TELL YOU- about some manhua i read on a random ass site i found. So i was looking for smth to read- a romance. stumbled upon something with a nice cover (i look for nice covers bc i literally cannot read something if i dont like the artstyle) and decide to read it. i was so ``pleasantly`` surprised, when the love intrest was an abusive husband who dosent just abuse the fragile kind uwu guy verbally also psychically + cheating + getting mad over the dumbest shit for some reason, for example the generic hot guy tells the blonde one that he cannot play the piano for some reason?? i either dont remember or there was no reason- and when hes out of the house the blonde finds his dead mothers piano and starts playing it, the black haired one comes back and goes on a rampage for no actual reason and BREAKS the blondes DEAD mothers piano. AND AFTER THAT he still stays with him, and there are even hints of him being inlove???? like what in the hell is that why is the love intrest an abusive guy?? i dont know how it ended bc i literally couldnt bare to read any more but there was an old best friend of the blonde who had a crush on him and literally did everything to cheer him up and istg if i ever decide to come back to this hot flaming garbage..and they dont end up together and they just forgive the weiredly badly written and dumb guy . im writing an angry letter to the creator

Actually there is nothing wrong with making a character perfect if you can write somthing like that. Look at sakamoto from I'm sakamoto he is a perfect human done well.sometimes the plot doesn't matter too much if you put Actual effort and writing into it. ONE is a great example, one punch man and mob psycho 100 both are series about OP characters and pretty generic looking plots but both of them managed to be some of the best stories ever written because of ONEs determination and effort.

“Wait why don’t they just communicate? Why don’t they just explain why he suddenly left and abandoned her?” You severely underestimate the stupidity of modern women. Even adult women get sucked up in crap like this. What draws them in is the “I can fix him” fallacy. Women have a wonderful sense of nurturing, but it can lead to delusional ideas like that. The lie being sold in toxic relationships like this is “look, I fixed him! You can fix your bad boy too!” Now toxicity is expected in relationships because of this lie.

To me, Webtoon should just label their romance sections, dark romance. These kinds of stories show the darker side of romance were toxicity, lies, and betrayal finds its way into ones love life and will mostliky end in tragedy...better yet, tragedy romance is a better title instead. Because that is what the romance section on Webtoon is! 😂

As a writer who writes with reoccurring characters and loves writing romance, I have experience writing dumb protagonists girls and hot stalkers. Lemme explain how I do it! Can your main character be a bit of a naive stupid idiot girl in a layer plot with a romance aspect? Sure, just give her depth and personality and don’t make her Y/N or self-insert. Acknowledge that her stupid actions are stupid in narrative, give her flaws. You can have a stalker, but good looks or trauma doesn’t excuse the actions of a bad character! My stalker is explicitly shown in the narrative as a bad dude, he isn’t gonna get the girl at this rate, man. Even if he has a good face, threatening a girl at a knife point just isn’t it, dude.

It’s about a husband who believes that his wife is a monster, and is given the chance to go back in time to be with the girl of his dreams. One of the itchiest thing about these webtoons is how the character all look the same. I don't even have a problem with having all characters looking cute or attractive. But why does every main couple in Manhwa look exactly the same. Even bland generic male protagonists in Anime doesn't have this degree of uniformity. Male K-pop stars too, they all look the same - it's like they were built on an assembly line.

Back in 2015-2017, Webtoon was THE place to get good 'comics' with variety of genre and new fresh creators dipping their feet in a world of paid comic-making and it was THE BEST time ever! In WebtoonID (Indonesian server of Webtoon), you have line-ups of underdog creators just throwing it down and thriving. The daily/weekly ranking in WebtoonID was colourful in terms of genre. "Slice-of-life" "Fantasy" "Adventure" "Comedy" "Romance", I seem to remember fantasy is purple color-coded and slice-of-life is yellow color-coded. Basically every creator that could uploaded THE update where the episode was booming would reign the ranking and I LOVED it. But it wasn't long until those glorious days fell off and PINK dominated the ranking. ROMANCE ROMANCE ROMANCE! PINK PINK PINK!!! I HATED IT!!! WebtoonEN basically fell off way long before WebtoonID in terms of this romance bs. I seem to find WebtoonEN is full of women/girls audience, hence, the pink domination. Whereas WebtoonID at the time was more balanced with men, women, boys, girls audience, then it's just romance. Everything is Romance. Eventually, I just stopped frequenting Webtoon, even though back then it was basically my daily habit to check webtoon. I only opened it once a week for my favourite story's update (the remnant of the old, sadly very short, glorious era) and when that one is finished, I just stopped frequenting the website.
