Thanks for the great content. Certainly thought-provoking and helpful for me to be a reliable company doing special events. After all of this, I’ve decided to make sure to purchase drives that are larger than what I actually need for a show. The thought being only using half of a drive’s capacity so to avoid problems as the drive fills up and the read / write speed changes. Also, only use the cable that comes with the drive, nothing else… because you can’t tell what other cables really are. This is the end of May 2023 and so far recently purchased T7s are working. However, now after watching your experience… I need more tests today and this week and if the T7 fails, I am returning it while it’s still in the product return timeframe. Thanks! Jim Las Vegas.

I had exactly the same issue with my BMPCC. The Samsung T5 was on the Tested list, but not the T7, however the T7 was available but not the T5. The T7 failed just like you found, but I managed to find a T5 and it works flawlessly. I had been wondering if the same issue occurred on the ATEM mini, and you have confirmed this. The Sandisk is using a USB 3.0 controller with SATA infrastructure internally. That's why you get 500MB read/400MB Write. The Samsung T7 is using USB 3.1 connection but internally it's an NVME drive (again, the Sandisk is SATA, not NVME) and since the Atem Mini has only SATA infrastructure internally, the Samsung SSD will crawl. On a PC, you'll get a very fast speed from this Samsung SSD if you'll connect it to a USB 3.1 or a thunderbolt port, or else - back to slow speed.

Thanks for that. I've actually tested a 5 T7's now on a few machines. 2 of them give me around 34 Write + 36 Read MB/s. the other three are giving me 380-800mb/s as you would expect on a mix of USB 3.0, 3.1, 3.2 The 2 slow disk only record around 15-30 frames then stop when ISO recording on the ATEM Mini The 3 faster disks record ISO fine. So some samsung disks are definitely having a problem

As I recall, an NVME in a 3.0/3.1 USB case does require a special driver - so your point is at least half right. But this particular drive looks, claims to be SATA. The NVME is a bus connected in a special case with an oblong form. The Sandisk looks just like any SATA SSD. Also - it wouldn't operate at all - it wouldn't just crawl.

@@DivineMisterAdVentures maybe an nvme need some power too, its a hungry thing that i cant imagine (in some case need 60-80watt for max speed maybe, just my assumption on high speed high temp). more speed, more power. thus atem mini cant supply that hungry wattage, so the best option is in sata platform less power and less heat. till now i still confused wich one should i buy consider off price to the investment value. thank you

T5's are still being made and work great on the ISO. I just purchased a T5 from Amazon and it shows a production date of 2021 07 08 (barely 1 month prior to my purchase). The T5's are also a bit less expensive than the T7 (at the time of this post).

Hello, thank you for the heads-up about the SSD's. I'm evaluating the possibility of using an ATEM Mini Pro ISO in a self-service video studio for faculty. I have a question that you might have the answer to. When using a USB-C hub, can the ISO be connected to a computer via usb for control and also record out to a USB dive at the same time? I'm trying to avoid connecting to the network, or using a local router. Our institution IT says that any additional routers or switches are prohibited on the network. Any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I was initially surprised to read reports about the T7 performance. However I noticed all such reports stemmed back to late 2020. By the time I received my Extreme ISO a few weeks ago, and everything was updated, the T7 seemed to work. Today I ran a 4-feed test and there weren't any noticeable problems, albeit total length not exceeding around 10 minutes. Not sure how to do a more scientific test of the performance, but the disk seems to work as expected. Presumably they sorted any initial problems with firmware and software updates by now. At least the 2 I have seemed to be ok so far

Hello, thanks for your videos! They are very informative. I was wondering if I get the: SanDisk 2TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD - Up to 2000MB/s - USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 - External Solid State Drive - SDSSDE81-2T00-G25, will it work properly with the Mini Pro ISO? I'm guessing it's overkill but I don't want to have to buy another one anytime soon. We are just getting things set up as we are all new to these things. We are also planning on purchasing the Nikon P1000 but for now we are hoping to use our other 2 cameras that we've had for a bit (Canon EOS M50 and a Nikon Coolpix L810). I'm hoping to be able to hook these cameras up to the Mini Pro and be able to record on it for over an hour. Will that work since the camera usually shuts off after 30 minutes of recording? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to figure it all out.

The screenshot of that speed measuring tool shows units in MB/s -- MB for megaBytes, not Mb for megaBits. You need to multiply MB/s numbers by 8 to convert to Mb/s. (Doesn't change the core perf issue; I also got bit by the same issue with a T7 drive.)

The weird bit is that every now and then the T7 does report around 400 MB/s .. but mostly around 34/36. I've done all the usual check on multiple machines and using different cables of course.

thanks for this video, I wanted to ask if you know how much an hour of recording at maximum quality can take in Gb on HardDisk? My technician said that it is 70Mb / s and therefore I have to multiply by 3600 which are the seconds that there are in an hour and I get 252,000 that is 252Gb, is all this space possible? Maybe if it goes from 45 to 70Mb / s the flow is variable. Thank you.

You need to learn what the difference between MB/s and Mb/s is - super important for figuring out actual data rates required or what the products offer.

With an old hackintosh and some older graphicscards you can use one of the hdmi out ports for the good old virtual switcher CamTwist fullscreen output to go into your atem mini. This adds multiple cool features to the equation like playing back videofiles, creating all sorts off effects add another atem mini, capturecards, usb cams etc etc in 1080 p24.. Stereo unbalanced high quality audio you get by hooking up your unbalanced soundcard or a mixer to one of the mic inputs on the back of your mini. On top of this add all that is already there in any of your atem mini models and you have the cheapest full hd studio ever that can both record and livestream. With the old intensity pro capturecards you can loop the signal on to a shuttle or some other hdmi recorder so there are lots and lots of fun stuff you can do with old 1080 gear and the minis.

I can confirm that the T5 works, but also interesting is the cable. To quote BMD support, “Also it's essential to use a USB-C 3.0 Gen 1 cable. Other cables may have the proper connectors but it's not workable for this situation. “ Maybe the cable sign the T7 is a 1.2 gen, which is twice as fast - but maybe too fast? These are all of the same issues we had with the original BMPCC 2.5k SSD on the initial release too.

Hi Tim, I’ve just came across your video and thank you for sharing. I’ve got a Samsung T5 SSD card 1tb I take it it won’t work on the Atem mini pro iso? I have an old one with a password on it so I thought that was the main reason it wouldn’t work due to not being able to unlock the password on the Atem hardware. What alternative do you suggest instead of the Samsung? The Sandisk? I’ll be recording the 4 isolated channels and also the program Channel. Thank you

We have tried a Samsung T5 1TB, SanDisk portable SSD 500gb (same one in your video) and a LaCie SSD 1TB, none of them worked, Atem lights up when you plug the drive in but then lights promptly go out as if no drive is connected, we have tried everything, sometimes the T5 randomly connects and is able to record for random durations before cutting out again, durations range from 15 seconds to up to an hour but not convinced its any kind of buffer issue as 99% of the time we have connected any of the aforementioned drives, lights go out within seconds. Atem has sat in its box since April as a result.

I just tried using the 1TB Sandisk that he recommended with my ISO’s multicam setup and it worked but stopped recording after just 23 minutes. It also doesn’t record jn RAW. i have 3 blackmagic pocket 4K cameras connected. The best thing to do is use the Samsung T5 connected to each camera.

I purchased the Sandisk 1TB disk and was using it to record on an ATEM mini pro via usb-c, but I was having problems with it (it would stop recording on its own). I contacted black magic and they said "buy the Samsung SSD." I did and I do not have this problem anymore. Not sure if anything similar happens with the ISO version. Just a thought.

Hey Tim, thanks for the video- super helpful as I get ready to purchase the Mini Pro ISO. I take it the "USB Out" is where we hook up the disk for recording. I've got a standard 1TB Sandisk SSD used for desktops in a portable USB 3.0 enclosure. The Amazon bundle I've got in my cart comes with an adapter so I'm hoping this will work fine as I'd rather not have to buy another SSD for recording. I'll report back once I've tested it out. Not only did it power the SSD but it also wrote the expected Davinci Resolve project folder/file to the drive. I also have heard that the newer T7s are inferior speed wise compared to the now discontinued t5’s. So far I haven’t experienced any hiccups using the t5s. Luckily I had bought a few (t5) to use with the Pocket4k and never thought to ‘upgrade’.

Hi Tim; for another option with added flexibility, I use the Asus ROG Strix Arion external NVME SSD enclosure with a Crucial P1 NVME drive and i get 873MB/s write and 917MB/s read which will be more than sufficient - the added benefit, you can get a much more inexpensive drive later on to upgrade the size - or, alternatively, have 2 enclosures and as many drives and then change them as needed be.

Not work in what way. Did the drive power up? Did it show up in the BM control screen? How was it formatted (strangely the Atem Mini Pro manual does not seem to specify any format)? I ask because my older Samasung SSD powers up, shows up and works on Macs, but neither powers up nor shows up when connected to the Atem.

Have you tested "desktop" / internal 2.5" SSDs in an enclosure caddy? USB A/B and C cables. That would always be my first option simply because the "internal" drives are cheaper, and some people may have 1 or 2 laying about, either from computer upgrades, or use in Black Magic Design cameras.

In the meantime we are a month further and unfortunately we did have issues with our T5, once we crossed to 60-70 minute mark of the recording. Opened a case with Blackmagic. They suggested to upgrade to the 8.5.2 firmware. Unfortunately that did not fix the issue at all. I now asked them to confirm to us what specific make/model of SSD that does not have these issues. :-(

@@jakoblacour They asked me to reflash the firmware once more in order to rule out any issue during the update process. They asked me to do a new test with the Samsung T5 after that and report on the issue. Around the same time I decided to buy a Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD 1TB instead, after seeing a positive review of that specific make/model in combination with the ATEM. And indeed, we did not have any more issue with the Sandisk. Since I am quite busy with other tasks I held off on testing with the Samsung again as basically nothing really changed and I do not anticipate to see a different outcome. If I have the time I will test it again, but for now it is just easier to switch to the Sandisk instead.

@@TimSimpson I've been using the ATEM Mini Pro ISO for the past 3 days for 2 hours livestream each day. On the first two days I used a Samsung T5 1TB drive and the recording worked fine (the REC started to blink after 1 hour and 40min but continued to save all 5 Streams to the disk. Today I used a T5 2TB drive and the whole stream and recording froze after 1 hour and 4 minutes. I had to restart the unit to continue. It was a huge problem, since the complete streaming stopped together with the recording. Tomorrow I am gonna use it again, this time I'm trying the SSD you recommended.

I take this from the forum of Blackmagic: "The T7 flat out didn't work with the Mini Pro ISO until the recent 8.5.1 and 8.5.2 firmware updates. It would stop recording after approximately one second 100% of the time. Lots of people (myself included) reported that issue, although I haven't seen many people confirming my success with the T7 since the 8.5.1 upgrade. Most people seem to come here to report problems and are less likely to report success :) Part of the problem is that BMD doesn't publish any sort of compatible or recommended media list for the Mini Pro or Mini Pro ISO like they do with many of their other products. The Angelbird at least appears on the Pocket Cinema Camera compatibility lists, which might give you more confidence that it will work with the Mini Pro ISO versus the T7 which doesn't appear on any of the lists last time I checked (unlike the T5 which did appear and which always worked fine)." // posted on Thu Nov 19, 2020 12:27 am

the issue is that the "new" generation Samsung SSD is worse: T7 is based on QLC nand flash, which is known to have crappy performance T5 is based on TLC nand flash that actually works (that's the one on the pictures)

I bought a new Samsung 1T drive and setup it up for a livestream gig. Went home and then found this video. I thought, "Oh no!". First thing I did on my way to the gig was check the model # of the Samsung. It was a T5. And it works just fine. Thank God my local tech shop sells old models of stuff. The T5 worked just fine. Whew.

2021 and this is still a problem - I bought the Samsung 1TB T7 SSD for use with an ATEM Mini Extreme ISO. The ATEM is running the latest firmware update and this SSD is listed on Blackmagic's "recommended drives" list on their support site: The very first recording failed. It appeared to be working but stopping the recording just left the drive flashing away erratically and the ATEM unable to record further until the drive was unplugged and plugged back in. The Davinci Resolve project file had a blank timeline. Wish I'd seen this video first! For others considering the Samsung SSD, Tim's recommendation still stands, best go with something else.

2023 and this is still a problem. I bought the 1 TB T7 and if failed in the exact same way you've described. I telephoned BlackMagic support and the technician I spoke to explained that the they'd just taken the T7 off the list as lots of customers had reported issues. I just ran a speed test with T7 (500GB) and got the following results. Using a USB3 connection, I got write 414MB/s, read 417MB/s. With a USB-C connection this doubled to 850MB/s and 912MB/s. This was using the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test tool. I think it's safe to say this should be adequate even for recording 9 channels of video.

i know this video is old, but this is how you "fix" your T7. I use mine to record on ATEM Extreme ISO with no "blinky drivey" issues after applying this easy fix. As with any new hardware, the first thing you should do is check and update the firmware. I had issues with T7 out of the box (mine is a shield version 1TB, MU-PE1T0S) so i downloaded a Samsung Magician app and updated the disk to the latest firmware (you get prompted to do so with the disk connected as soon as you start the app). I also bought a short 40Gbps UBS-c cable because the original was kind of loose. Speeds were tested with a new 40Gbps cable. Before the upgrade write speeds tested in mid 300M(bits)ps sequential, 1.5Mbps in random mode. after the upgrade sequential tested @ 920Mbps, random @ 450Mbps. Upgrade the firmware of your T7 (free) instead of spending $500 on a T5 or an additional SSD from Sandisk, or wasting time on whiny videos. OP might also want to read up on bits vs Bytes.

I'm from Brazil and i've one ssd kigston 480gb, and my records are pretty ugly; During the record, some cameras don't record properly, i mean the audio is there, but the images freezes randomly, and i lost all my feature of atem mini pro iso(the project on Davince Resolve); I'll buy the sandisk ssd to test, i hope that could help be; Tks for the video;

Firstly with the T7, that have been resolved with a recent firmware update available from samsung. If you're having problems recording as described then I would assume you're using an SSD which isn't capable of the datarate needed to write to the drive. Check on the BMD support site for a recently published list of tested and compatible SSDs.

Omg I finally found the first discussion on Atem mini pro ISO with ISO recording issue ! Since day one I never got succeed recording multi HDMI source to external SSD on ISO. Every time I push record button it just terminated after 1 sec, but still produced full folder structure in SSD. Tried many brand of M2. SSD with R/W speed of 3000MB with no luck. No respond from Blackmagic neither. I will go buy Sandisk Extreme and try again!! Thanks Tim!

We got the switcher for a podcast setup but plugged up my SSD and the REC light turned yellow and would not record. Did some research and found your page. I really think it depends on the cable. If you use a long cable then it does not work. (I swapped out the supplied cable for one that is 3 times the length). The model no of the T7 is MU-PC1T0H. Perhaps there has been an update to the ATEM since your posting in Sept 2020? Anyways I thought I'd leave a comment. Great Videos BTW.

not seen any problems with the sandisk, just the samsung, and only some disks. If it's performing slowly it will be doing it on you pc/mac as well. The problem is with the drive, not the ATEM. Download Blackmagic Disk Speed Test application for free to test the drive

So, I’m a bit confused as to what to do. I bought two of the Samsung T7 drives believing that their speed would make them the best choice. I’ve seen more than a few reviews and of course yours saying that they are problematic. I have not had a single problem running for up to an hour with all 4 inputs. My question is do you think I just got lucky, do you think Samsung has done something new with these drives, i.e. should I trust it or should I just buy the Sandisk. @@HeresMo damn! That sucks. Always good to have a extra. As for swapping out footage, easy as. They’re all just video files at the end of the day. It’s wise to check your standard are the same - especially frame rate. A lot of people choose to drop in 4K off a camera if it needs zooming in in the 1080p project for example. It’s really all about your edit software at that point. I really want to see BMD make the drp file a multi cam project instead of a program out edit. That will come one day

Just trying to figure out if this is my problem, have the T5 and the recording looks bad, the feed on MV is great but then when I take it from T5 to my computer the transitions are all pixelated and the footage generally looks bad. Did you enable HD in the setting?

If the drive is misbehaving and the nitrate available is low the you will get heavier compression. You can also set the compression rate in the ATEM software control. If you suspect the drive speed is an issue, download the black magic disk speed test utility

When it stopped recording did the record button start blinking red? I just got the atem mini pro iso and have been using the Samsung T7 (bought it also because I saw it in the Black magic pictures) and it has worked on and off. I have done 4 recordings where I filmed for over an hour each time, but the today it stopped after about 20 minutes and the rec button was blinking red. Is this the same issue you had?

If you go to the Samsung support site you’ll find a firmware update for the drive. This should help. Samsung actually restarted T5 production because of demand from users

Surely it's only connecting at usb 2 speeds to your blackmagic desk for it to get those speeds. Also those 1k+ reads claimed by the samsung disk are likely false advertising, it'll just be a SATA SSD inside the case which would limit the speed to 750Mbps which would be the limit of SATA3. You should also pull the case apart and try different SSD's with the interface inside the external drive.

heya - the ATEM Mini pro ISO writes out at around 380-400mb/s over usb-c. about 1 in 5 tests on various machines the Samsung T7 reports at ~400mb/s read and write but mostly arond 34-36 mb/s.This is about the speed I expect going from USB-C to USB 3.2 And yes you're right about the sustained rates being well below the "up-to" speeds often advertised. When marketing departments override the tech specialists :D

Tim Simpson I think you’re getting MBps and Mbps mixed up. One is 8x the other. However, my Samsung T5 works at 300 MBps, so I have a feeling something is wrong with your setup or machine or even the format of the disk if you’re getting 30 MBps. That’s slower than USB 2

Currently I, shoot my video, then I upload it to Premier Pro for a sound sync and edit... I got the atem... In hopes of streamlining might work flow… Any thoughts on this?

There are 2 parts to answering that. Firstly when the ATEM records a resolve project it does save you a lot of time editing. you can trim and slip cuts, it records transitions etc.Some things it doesn't record - I should make a video on that. If you're happy with this then it does mean that your resolve project wil just need cleaning up and you can get that clean output published quickly. This works well for me when shooting sports event and interviews etc. What it doesn't do is record a mulitcam project like some people assume - keep that in mind. If you're not concerned about retaining the realtime edit, then you can still import the ISO files into premiere of cource (or FCPX or anything else) into a multicam project. The great thing about this is that all of the video files are sync'd perfectly. This will provide some major advantage in editing and if you do use a multicam project for it, then it won't take you any longerr that scrubbing and altering a recorded resolve project. Note that some cameras have an audio or video lag - this is a CAMERA property more than an ATEM property, as HDMI out is traditionally just for monitoring, with recording being an after thought. This is usually a constant lag an easy / fast to rectify by slipping the audio track until it syncs

Ultimately I do want to retain the real time edit (i think) … And then make tweaks to it, slips, cuts, funny inserts... my goal in mind is to cut down my editing time, by editing live in camera in the shoots (so I can post more videos a day)… so does this mean I will not have the real time edit in premiere Pro? (I don’t have a lot of multi camera experience, pardon my ignorance) Perhaps I can get the job done in da Vinci resolve? Judging from the videos that you have seen of mine Tim do you think I can get the job done and da Vinci?

@@Stakewithnerd, in DaVinci Resolve there is an option to export the timeline to XML which can be opened in other NLVEs like Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro. So if one prefers using them, they could install DR for free just to open the DRP file with all the cuts and then export to XML and use their favourite NLVE. I realise this is an old comment, and you have likely sorted all this out, but I will mention here for the benefit of others who may be considering options.

I'd assumed that having recorded all the streams, when you opened up the file in DaVinci it'd be a multicam project so that you can adjust the transitions etc. and change which camera was switched to etc.

I have that same SanDisk drive and for some reason after updating the ATEM Mini Pro to the latest firmware it will no longer detect it. Very frustrating.

Same here. Picked up the ATEM this week. Worked out of the box great with that very same SanDisk. Upon updating the ATEM, the SanDisk is erratic and if it does see the drive it reports an incorrect available recording space and will record about 2min and stop responding.

@@ericw357 Blackmagic just released another update that is supposed to fix the issue. Try uninstalling the Atem software and downloading the new firmware. It actually worked for me, but I haven't done much testing yet with recording times.
