Another thing hardly anyone mentions is davinci's rolling shutter tool using the camera's gyroscope data. It fixes any jello effect and I swear it doesn't even crop in. It's magical.

@@qvisionmedia7195 tweaks: sensor readout and impact on rolling shutter, added support for anamorphic settings using open gate versus having some split between open gate and 6K 17:9 modes (or 4K). There was another tweak but I can’t remember. I understand that you are probably focused on image quality but I never mentioned anything about the image in my initial comment. You can research these things if you want. Also there may be other available firmware updates to expand on the sensors performance so time will tell.

A G2 with an inhouse sensor would be my perfect camera - no windowing, faster sensor read-out for higher frame rates and less shutter lag and an even better image (like the cine 12K but less pixels)... Hey Carl, first off, fantastic overview of the pyxis! Secondly, to address your question, Id like to see black magic come out with a full frame global shutter sensor pyxis variant and i think as you mentioned a 3:2 sensor read out would be important to maintain. Working within the engineering confines of this current body I think expanding the pyxis line up for different use sensors is the most logical step that would look to compete with the Red Komodo line at a cheaper price point.
@carlyates2487

Agreed. I'd rather see one of their very fast RGBW sensors though personally. As the URSA cine is nearly as fast as a global shutter, but can do FAR more frame rates and has exceptional dynamic range.

Great comprehensive review. I'd also like to see some coverage of video resolutions. I was thinking of using the GH7 for some indie 2x anamorphic work, but open gate 4:3 video on the GH7 is limited to 4:2:0 and it can't be output to HDMI without downscaling to 4k. Pyxis looks like the camera I should be looking at. I have a 1.5x Bolex anamorphic which should work with a small corrective crop in the Pyxis open gate to achieve cinemascope or just use the Pyxis anamoprhic 5k mode which uses a 6:5 crop to yield to cinemascope using 2x squeeze lenses. It's only a little more expensive than the GH7.... well at least it's in the same ballpark even when adding the display. You also get a much more riggable setup. It's also not so expensive that you couldn't buy it for your personal projects.

Two things stood out to me. First, the dynamic range tests from Cined are quite purist, as they don’t apply noise reduction to enhance the shadows. This means you can likely extract more dynamic range from the camera, depending on the sealing. Second, regarding rolling shutter, I think using gyro data could be a good workaround, though I’m not sure how much motion smoothing it would provide.
@carlyates2487
@carlyates2487 2 ай бұрын
Absolutely, you find cameras like the A7 IV which do incredibly well on their tests because of the aggressive NR implementation. While the Blackmagic cameras have no NR applied at all. Yes, there is that tool in resolve could help in some situations.

13:25 now this is without noise reduction, which the other cameras often do in camera. and id ray that BRAW has some of the most potential for cleanup of any other codec, as it is so flexible and works so well with Davinci resolve. I also think that for the price, the Pyxis is unbeatable. It is a Large format, compact box style camera with internal raw and perfect riggability. The only true competition i see is the Komodo (which is super35 and more expensive), the V Raptor (which is vistavision and way more expensive) and a few of the ZCams, which are either more expensive, or cant do internal raw to the same quality as the pyxis. I think the only other camera that comes close is Nikon Z6iii and the Panasonic S5ii(and s5iix) and those are not boxy, cant rig as simply as the pyxis and dont have the incredible menu system that blackmagic has nailed. I went from a 6k Pro to the S5IIx, and i really miss the simple and intuitive menu of Black magic, more so than i feel like the autofocus is helping me

Because of extra cooling and high processing hardware that the new RGBW Cine 12K sensor demands, the Pyxis would become same size as Cine 12K. However, after you rig the Pyxis for proper cinema work, their relative sizes don't differ too much (less than 1 kg in weight).

@phrasalsyntax
@phrasalsyntax 2 ай бұрын
@@mmlewis1030 Even if you limit the recordings of the sensor to 8K, 4K those are downsampled from 12K (that's why those 8K, 4K have the full with of the sensor). And the cooling and hardware power required to process 12K needs space, that's the reason of the size of BM Cine 12K. On the other hand, you said that “if BM don’t bring those sensors then the Pyxis line will fall behind competitors too much.” I consider the Pyxis sensor better in IQ than any of the competitors (Sony FX3, FX6, Canon C80, RED Komodo OG…) under sub $8K. It’s not better in terms of read-out speed and AF capabilities, but in terms of IQ it’s an impressive sensor in 2024 and for some years to come.

I would also prefer to have a compressed codec option to shoot with in 6K, such as ProRes HQ 422, or H.265. @@carlyates2487 I guess if you're shooting studio or feature work with a large crew, then the lack of internal NDs is less of an issue but IMO, this camera seems very unsuited to single handed doc work, where the 'quality' of internal RAW recording is less attractive even with the novel Box form factor. BMD seem to have always pushed picture quality over ergonomics, right from their very first cameras yet Sony on the other hand, have always struck a successful balance between the two, right back to their very first ENG Betacams.

This is the “ultimate final form” camera for Sony’s IMX410 sensor. Pyxis, and the S1H from Panasonic, probably present the two best examples of how that sensor can be put to use with a good OLPF in the stack. I’m ready for a new 24X36mm CMOS, with two improvements: readout speed and dynamic range. The latter is more challenging, as it requires either an increasing ADC bit depth, or a dual simultaneous gain architecture, but I’m hoping that will come to mid-level fullframe cameras sooner rather than later. Physically, I’m waiting for a “Pyxis Pro” with two things: internal ND, and a V-Mount/Gold Mount battery option. Larger batteries quickly become necessary anyway when rigging up (the whole point of Pyxis,) so a few LEMO ports for powering monitor/wireless/hot-spot/FIZ motors would be fantastic. If one of those ports could also be run/stop up front, that’d be icing on the cake.

Hi there, Carl: I have the most OCD comment ever. Can you PLEASE rotate the lamp shade in your studio on camera right so that the seam in the lampshade is facing AWAY from the camera? Those seams drive me nuts.Thanks in advance.

Pyxis is cheaper and have better colors and IQ, the raw codec is both great and restrictive (not well welcomed by all Editors / Productions ). Other than that, everything else is better on FX6. Its a question of 20% better IQ vs Ease of use and well knowned workflow.

I own the fx6, love it death as it covers all bases, but it depends on your work as well, if you don’t have time to set up lighting and frame your scenes all the time the Bm might give you a hard time. But I haven’t used it yet so I can’t confirm.

Needs internal ND and ProRes. Just up the price, lose the goofy side display, and include those features. I would have bought it already if those were an option.

Agreed. Its still a fantastic camera, but those two things would make it better. On prores, I'd love to see an advanced version of their Pyxis monitor which had the video assist recording built in. Then you could record Prores or H.264 /H.265 on their when needed without adding much extra bulk to the camera.

In the US BMD on commercials or proper paid professional sets is not seen as ok. This could be the best camera ever... its still a BMD camera. That stigma is real. These will get used in VFX and such like filming the motion capture etc... but not as A or B cams to Arri Sony or Panavision or Red. Sorry but that is the hard inescapable truth of this brand. I have owned several of their cameras before you go assuming I am throwing blind shade. But if you want a budget sub 10000 dollar camera to GET YOU PAID -Sony Fx6 - Fx3 - Fx30 -Canon C80 C70 C400 Komodo-X - these WILL GET YOU PAID. Save up and get the models that make money and are in demand.

Admittedly, i'm in the UK rather than the US of course. But I'm not sure thats true? You see the Pocket cameras being used all the time in car rigs, VFX rigs for actor closeups, crash cameras etc. The Pyxis will offer them something similar in a much more riggable formfactor which will be very useful for that kind of work

We have spoken many many times on this channel about the lack of AF in Blackmagic cameras. Including our recent live stream interview with Craig Heffernan, their Technical Sales Director for Europe, where he mentioned it was something they are actively looking at developing in the future. And explained that other technical advancements like their BRAW codec and RGBW sensor technology took priority for them in R&D which is why they haven't made any advancements in AF in recent years.

The only downside of this camera is the sensor, it’s an A7III sensor, is it a bad sensor? Nope. Just that people want something unique and different sensor instead of one from an older camera. But with that, the price of the Pyxis will increase as well.

This is exactly what i mean in the video. Blackmagic raw is fantastic, but lots of people are not in control of the workflow and codec choice on their projects. If you do want to use the Pyxis, it is still possible. But you would have to use a Video Assist as your on camera monitor and then use that to record prores.
