100% correct that optics matter. If a client client hires you for a corporate shoot and you show up with an a6700 and a flip out screen they're gonna second guess everything you do. If you show up with something like this they'll immediately assume you know what you're doing and are more likely to trust your decision making.

I think it depends on who, how it’s going to be rigged and for what. The look and quality of Black Magic cameras is beautiful. Recently watched a video from Armando Ferreira using this camera in a production and the results looked pretty amazing!

I do agree that camera looks are strangely important and have a reality warping effect. I remember I was shooting a Dublin wedding some years back and we got there a week early to shoot special interest footage around southern Ireland for local color. We were shooting castles and going around pubs to film bands. With a matte box on anyone in front of the camera thought we were filming a network documentary of Ireland. If you pointed the camera into a large crowd they parted like the Red Sea. When inside the pubs the pub owners would supply free Guinness and the musicians wanted release contracts just in case we posted on youtube.

The iOS on Blackmagic cameras is second to none. The production company I work with has 6 ursas, 2 pocket 6k’s, 4 pocket 4ks, everything is edited using davinci resolve. I own a pocket 4k and am planning on picking up the pyxsis. I’m biased, a bit of a black magic maxi but I really love using their products.

Nice video Matt! I will most likely be getting a Pyxis. The big draw for me is Blackmagic’s dream menu system, the native BRAW codec for DaVinci and using it as a tool to transition more into the role of a cinematographer. Having shot ProRes RAW on the FX3, there is a noticeable difference in 12-bit video compared to 10-bit. The problem with converting ProRes RAW into CDNG to be used in DaVinci is that it triples the file size for each file. The Z8 is also very compelling for internal raw that can be used in DaVinci without converting and the fact that it has great autofocus.

The whole idea of building out a rig is to get a custom professional setup so *you* choose from the best the market has to offer. Sure they could have included *their* version of IBIS and *their* version of auto-focus, but that defeats the purpose. You want stabilization that works for all of your lenses? Get a DGI RS 4 Pro gimbal stabilizer for $860. It will work with all of your lenses including anamorphics. You want high-end autofocus for a really challenging sports or film shoot? Get the DGI Focus Pro LIDAR creator system for another $1000. You want full-on Steadicam integration that's another $3000. So for a little under $8000 you have a full 6k full frame open gate, anamorphic friendly, single operator, body-vest steadicam stabilizer system with LIDAR autofocus at under 1/3rd the price of the Sony. Sure you'll need a little more for batteries, storage etc but you'll always need that. Compare apples to apples and remember the whole idea of rigging.

I wonder if you entered the focal lenght metadata when doing that gyro stabilization test. I bet you did not as it should not look like that. In my experience when dialing in the correct metadata or using a native L mount lens the gyro stab works much better that any ibis.

Sad but true that camera looks are important too. I once had a random employee comment on how he thought it was going to be a professional shoot, so how come I was there with a stills camera, no, not everyone is using stills cameras for video nowadays and so on and so on. So yeah, there's always that guy.

Another great vid! For weddings, this camera is definitely a no. No AF, no IBIS, subpar low light, just as expensive fully rigged out. Not to mention you would need at least a couple of these cameras for your footage to look consistent (second shooter, cameras on sticks).

Own a Pyxis, really like it. Also have an Ursa G2 for years for my work. I'm looking into purchasing the Ursa Cine EVF, and a question I cannot find an answer too anywhere(yet) is.. can you take the dovetail mount off of the actual EVF to mount the EVF on different things? If I don't want to use that dovetail system, I'm wanting to know what is on the actual EVF behind it(if it even comes off)... a 1/4" screw hole, arri rossette? etc.. etc.. thanks!

RED 3K resolution camera for $3K? BMD launched their BMCC 2.5K for $3K and is the spiritual ancestor. The 2.5K resolution worked very nice in 1080p timelines/comps. Just like 6K does for 4k timelines nowadays.

As a long time cinema camera user, I would avoid this unit. The lack of ND's and IS are pretty major omissions, IS perhaps lesser than ND. Depth of field is a must for any serious filmmaker, and to have to apply each manually is a step backwards. Good video, though!

This camera just doesn't seem practical out in the field. I still say spend the extra money on the FX3. Better quality video and next year it will have 16 bit external BRAW recording and at that point it is a no brainer. The tilta cage for the FX3 gives you so many mounting points and things like a bottom rail to mount to gimbals and their rail system (tilta makes the best rigging options). I love DaVinci Resolve but nothing BMD has done has convinced me that I should move to their camera system other than BRAW recording.
@earnieboy5420 күн бұрын
Honestly, I feel like this is biased and skewed. IBIS and internal NDs aren’t this huge dealbreaker. And lowlight shooting is nice but most people looking at this camera have a light kit built for narrative and commercial work. I dunno. KZbin reviewers are losing their rep in my opinion.

"the world's most riggable full frame digital film camera" is not an accurate statement. with the giant monitor on the left side, that entire side is not riggable. also the lens mount is not interchangeable... the Zcam E2F6 is also a full frame, 6K, box style cinema camera, but the lens mount IS interchangeable, and the left side is actually riggable. it only has a tiny 1 inch monitor on top, next to multiple mounting points, because Zcam is expecting you to use an external monitor... The Zcam is a more versatile and more riggable camera... I talked about this in a video on my channel.
