I was mad and shocked when the audience didn't erupt at the first word. Even if you didn't know The White Stripes had a cover of this song when you hear her name, you know the song. Thomas Bucciero, I completely agree. I was listening to Dolly Parton's original version on KZbin recently. I've always loved the song, "Jolene." I happened to see the White Stripes version. So, out of pure curiosity, I thought I'd watch the video. I was blown away immediately. It's like what you said: to hear a man, and a straight man at that, sing a song from a female perspective with such power and emotion is an amazing experience. When Jack White sings this song, I don't even need suspension of disbelief. I'm completely convinced he is a heartbroken woman, nearing madness, who is fighting desperately to keep the only man she'll ever love.
