Blackie, don't listen to comments saying your over explaining things, im 51 years old, My grandpa grew up in the great Depression as did my Grandmother, he had his way of sharpening knives on an old wore out stone so much that the STONE itself was wavy, not could he get a knive sharp, by the grace od god absolutely, but was it the right way to do it, probably not but thats what he taught me on , I need to learn the right way , thank you for all you do.

Yes, to sharpen a knife correctly, this is for many one of the most difficult things, also for me. I have seen countless videos, most of them completely factual, but you can always learn a little more. Thanks for your video! I got new, great tips on how to proceed when it comes to sharpening knives. Thanks again ! 😃👍

Hey Blackie- Good talking points on sharpening and I believe you covered everything and then some. I think the problem people have with sharpening is that they were taught the wrong way and is the only way they know how or they dont want to take their time and do it the correct way. Anyways- good instruction and be safe out there Blackie-

Another great tutorial, Blackie. I felt like my granddaddy was here speaking to me again when he taught me. Yes, it is a true skill. I don't use your setup but I do use a Lansky sharpener system. I've been using it 25 years because I have carpel tunnel. It also holds the blade and the small holder can be easily held in the hand or placed on a mount. It has 17, 20, 25, 30 degree bevels for the edge. Most blades will be 20-25 degrees, I've found. (My top stone is 20,000 grit for a mirror edge so many want but don't need.) I still use by-hand sharpening on stones for some knives. I do sharpening by hand. Yes, I've been cut a few times using it this way and with stones of any type. (Cuts teach you fast.) I can carry the mount with the few honing stones (600+ grit) to use in the field or elsewhere in a small pouch. These are oil stones but a little pocket pen oiler works great and you don't need much oil. If using oil stones, a good quality oil is needed. I use Norton's Sharpening Stone Oil. It is food safe! (Some oils are not food safe!) I thought I'd add my 45 years of sharpening experience to yours.

Nice one Blackie. You covered what I was thinking at the end. A good light will definitely show up dull spots along the edge. Before I sharpen I always look at my edge to see what I’m up against, go through appropriate stones and check along the way under light. Finish up with a few licks on a worn out sharpening steel “ it takes off less metal” paper test and shave a little arm hair lol.

Don't know if its a stupid question. But I'm noticing you're sharpening toward the edge of the blade, rather than going away from it. I was always under the disposition that you should sharpen away from the edge. I vaguely recall that being taught to us in boy scouts, but I was never really good at paying attention. Only recently after getting more into knives and blades have I been trying to learn how to properly maintain them.

A recent "Silver Wolf" video has me thinking about my knife choice for my old arthritic hands. I've got fairly large hands and still have a decent grip but I can't close my hands completely. Is the Condor Bushcraft knife a suitable knife for Silver hands? Are there others that will fit the bill without getting into custom prices?

Great information. The only thing I didn’t hear that everyone who is benefiting from the video is SLOW Down. Notice there was no chief Ramsey sharpening rod, 100 mph ego trip going on. I prefer NO sharpening angle setting tools, only because you are not really learning how to sharpen a knife. The explanation on finding the bevel was clear. Touch and tilt and slowly pull. If your just learning don’t just jump to the re- create a bevel just because you didn’t the results you wanted in the few minutes your trying. He said a very important thing, ITS A SKILL even with SILVER hands…. Technique changes as our hands get SILVER. Meaning find something that will hold the stone in place so you can focus on just sharpening and holding a stone and sharpening and trying to be consistent with your bevel. A black sharpie on you bevel will tell the story on what your doing before you wave an edge and God forbid attempt to create another bevel. Good luck

Okay... you win... rofl, how do you know ya whack yer finger at the edge of the stone? Where there many bandaids or just one? Lol You can also use light to check for a rolled edge... A nice smooth edge will hold an even flash when straight on to a light source. If it wanders, you got an edge roll.

Hey 👋 Blackie, berofe my miserable company, I was a carpeting manager/cook. I did go too college to get my :- City and Guilds in Catering and Bakery. I knew how too sharpen a chefs knife. When I had too go off due too a long time physical, medical issues, I’ve had for 43 yrs. I was always asked too sharpen the knives when I managed too bob into work. But it has too be said. A Chef will NEVER, I mean NEVER LET ANYONE USE THERE KNIVES. EVERYONE, DOES, sharpen and cut different. I never took a knife out in the kitchen without resharpening that knife. It really REALLY a person thing. So, do not lend your knives!!!!!!!! You 😮😮😮😮😮❤❤❤❤❤❤🇬🇧🙏🇬🇧🙏🇬🇧🙏🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

I only have one very hard steel knife I like softer types since I carry a flat file with a few strokes I have a new edge. I use my quality knives to dig holes for tent pegs I use a cleaver to prepare wood or as a shovel. I do not take care of my knife it takes care of me. To agonize over angles et cetera is IMHO: silly.

I know this site has lots of view and remarks and you can’t get too them all????? Do you know Blackie. I’ve a pair of scissors in my glove box all the time, for when I put flowers 💐 on mum and dad’s grave. If I got stopped by the Police, I’d be in trouble, having them in the glove box????? Crazy I know. But I know why, but they are still there, cos I’ll always know they are there when I need them. But I would love too lean about knife metals?????😂❤💖🇬🇧🙏🇬🇧🙏🤷‍♀️😇🇬🇧❤️🙏🇬🇧
