Thank you for this video. I’ve been looking at that revolver model for a while now and want one to go with my 1860 army. This video provided so much good info for me. Been loving your channel.

Like I said in your earlier R and S video, I'm envious. I like the design and functionality of the cap and ball pistols and the guns of the old west in general. The designers and manufacturers back then were geniuses and their products were works of art.

Hey Blackie Have you ever tried a Howell conversation cylinder for the Euroarms R&S?
@WMDTVIDS2 жыл бұрын
Over the years ive had a few repro C&B revolvers and worked on several for friends, and shot them some, so i'm familiar and appreciative of their design and use. Ive gotten hooked on your videos the last month due to finally indulging my long-repressed interest black powder weapons. As i watched this just now, i was fondling an ASM 1858 Remington repro i just bought the other day, so i was able to look directly at the reason for the improvements on the R&S, or nod my head in agreement- like with the grip design! Your videos are a masters-level class in cap and ball guns and i really appreciate the time and effort you take to make this available, as i feel it could 1) disappear as people get more foolish and less firearms oriented or 2) become very relevant once again as firearms get more restricted. I also love and appreciate the fact that you go beyond the colt/Remington paradigm and talk of other designs and why they are relevant and important. Because of you, i have added the 1849 pocket to my must have list. Thank you and keep up the great practical and historically relevant work- and allow me to add that you blend both seamlessly.

Why do think Colt never made some improvements like the Remington had? Like the frame and cylinder from moving and hitting off each other? And why didn’t Colts close framed guns get used more? It also puzzled me that Remington didn’t make a better cylinder removal system. And put grease groves on the cylinder pin. And make the cylinder pin bigger like a Colt. And I can’t believe how much the cartridge gun Remington made looked like the SAA. And how the SAA bet the Model 3/ Schofield I already thought they were much more well designed guns. Any views on the post systems to keep caps in place? Seen this on the cap and ball channel. Also why did they taper the chambers? Why not just keep them the same diameter all the way down? Would love to see what a Walker, Pocket and 60 Army could hold with chambers like that.

Well acording to the book colts 1860 army by Charles pate. You can read the accounts of colts root revolver that had a top strap binding up after 1 cylinder same goes for the remington. where the open top colt revolvers were always very popular with the troops. Afterwards in the Indian wars there were many accounts of officers writing Washington demanding that the government replace there remingtons with colts... of course after the fire at the colt factory colt wouldn't have any guns to send out really untill the 72open top and the 73saa which had bushing around the base pin that kept ot from guming up.. the remingtons did not have that.
@BLACKIETHOMAS2 жыл бұрын
the colts were great and the war had colt on full production ( not alot of time to redesign or come up with tottaly new guns )and once the factory fire happened he was really working to catch up when the war ended it was clear cased ammo was the future and every one was waiting for the bore thru cyl patton that S&W had to run out when it did you saw the 1871 /1872 / and then the single action army and it was all full frame from then on

Hey Blackie, great video. I recently picked up a R&S and am quite taken with it. But...I think you will find that if you set your powder measure on 50 grains, and throw it on a scale, you will get around 45 grains or less. Those powder measures seem to run about five grains less than actual weight. Using weighed charges, 40 grains of 2fg Swiss is the most I can get under a ball. Under the LEE 200 grain bullet, 30 grains is the maximum, in my revolver. (Euroarms/DGG)

Sorry late to the game. From what little I know, I believe Rogers & Spencer bought the Austin H. Freeman patent and got the government contract with their improved revolver. Funny thing to me is that, i.m.o., the Freeman had a better cylinder pin retention system than compared to the R&S. Off topic: Is how much the Freeman revolver will remind you of a Starr.

The idea of finding an original Civil War era cap and ball pistol that still brand new in it's cardboard box as surplus. That gives me chills just thinking about it. I bet there are some still out there in someone's attic or basement. Almost as amazing as the people how found sn# 2 colt SAA in a wall tearing down an old house.

Very very Interested to see the shooting and it will be quite exciting to see the Kado bullet in this compact dragoon. Also what ever happened with your little wrangler. Did the base pin issue just sour you on it. I was hoping to see it in action some time. Being an old Montana ranch kid a kit gun is such a comfortable concept to me.

Hey Blackie - really enjoyed the fluid joy you put into that surperb R&S appreciation video. Am in UK and luckily enough (bizarre even) to have picked up a low numbered R&S revolver in an auction here. The revolver has a great feel in the hand and can now understand the technical and subtle upgrades you've discussed in this video. Brilliant. Being able to compare to the 1851 (a London Colt) and the 1858 Remington think you've got this assessment spot on. Thank you for putting this video together - keeping these old historic guns alive! I'll get round to shooting it at some point and let you know how we get on.

Hi Blackie! Ok. Question. What is the cylinder gap on your Rodger & Spencer? I just purchased a stainless one manufactured in 1996 and it looks unfired, but the gap is about .012. How is yours looking? It’s a beautiful handgun, but I thought .012 a bit excessive for a gap.

See I love the elegant looking of the Patterson> The Saunders Museum at Berryville AR has a ton of old Colts from the Patterson on till like the 1930's. The Patterson's only dislike for me is the drop down trigger and no trigger guard. The Remington New Model Army revolver may be my favorite of the civil war era. Personally I would have wanted a Spencer repeater if I had been fighting then for my rifle. As always cool information and history sir. Thank You>

Blackie, the reason that Colt had orders they were not filling was due to the Confederates burning down the Colt plant! The US forces had to turn to other suppliers toward the end of the war. Remington was always first alternate, then anyone else.

I still prefer a Colt percussion revolver, but of course they have issues with cap jams . The Rogers and Spencer, Remington, Whitney were much better in regard to cap jams and frame strength. But the Colt had the benefit of not fouling out as quickly because of the open top design. That was a very interesting history. Thanks blackie!

@@BLACKIETHOMAS I wonder how the story started but it seems there must be some truth to it because it would be a weird story to make up. But since (as you discovered) it can take a heavier charge perhaps they did use it to provide a bit more hitting power when compared to the black powder Colt 45LC's they were using.
@ericgleixner4074 Жыл бұрын
I thought the reason behind the Remington contracts was because Colt had a massive fire and couldn't produce in the middle of the war. Am I mistaken?
@pecospest10 ай бұрын
I disagree on the ancestry of the revolver , it is basically an Austin Freeman with the loading lever of a Pettengill. ( incidentally , the Pettengill was manufactured by Rogers and Spencer )
@mattparker97262 жыл бұрын
what I'd like to see is taking the 1895 Nagant's gas sealing cylinder and ammunition, and combine that into a top break revolver, like say, a S&W baby russian. That way you have a silencable, but fast reloading gun.
