Shortly after getting his first tattoo-a piece of flash he picked off the wall-Joe saw someone else walking around with the same exact tattoo. At that moment he knew that something needed to be done and it altered his entire journey. After discovering heavy blackwork tattooing, Joe realized what he truly wanted. We spoke with Joe about his collection, the looks he gets when he's out in public and the intricacies of well done blackwork.
Welcome to Heavily Inked. In our newest series, we're going to speak one-on-one with tattoo collectors and artists about what it means to be a heavily inked person. We'll get deep as we go through the motivations behind their tattoo choices, the way they've been treated in society and much more.

agreed. def if u like black out tattoos u gotta be off. I get tattoos , hell cover spot if that's ur thing. but to get a portion of ur body just painted black. u mjust really jot like who u are. the amazing designs of tattoos is ghr point . he keeps saying I grew out of this, and I grew out of that. not a great sign that ull be happy w anything. figure out who u are, then get ink to represent that. this makes absolutely no sense to me but I guess is the world of 8 yr old taking hormone blockers and trans sports competition I must have made a wrong turn.cause america is still a good place, but we seem to produce the worst people short of stalin

Best answer I've heard to the "tattooed person" question... "Yeah, (there) definitely was, and that's when I started forgetting about having the tattoos..." I can 100% relate, I feel like once I did my neck, I started to subconsciously think about my ink differently. It's like, "ok, thats there, they're all there, awesome", and like he said, the shock value vanishes when getting a new one. The ink has just slowly, piece by piece, become a part of me, my identity and my story. Like Joe, I also knew when I was just a youngin that i'd get it done like this one day, still remember seeing a "heavily inked" adult for the first time when I was like 5. Joe, if you ever read this, I'm also a born and raised south jersey boy from Marlton, and I think you're rad as shit inside and out. Hope we cross paths sometime.

That really is true about the shock value when getting a new one. Because regardless of whether someone else finds our tattoo(s) striking or shocking or amazing, it's on our own body for life and it takes time for us to get used to it as well. I have 5 large 'visible' pieces, and I remember getting used to having the first one, and people looking at it (as an introvert and a woman, and back in the early 00's when tattoos were just starting to be more mainstream). Now I don't even really think about having them, though I've always loved them all as part of my identity.

I'm not particularly the biggest fan of blackouts and I can appreciate how beautiful done his is, but I remember reading something abt someone who had their arm blacked out and they have to wear an arm cover when they are in the sun bc their arm would start to heat up and burn in the sun. I always wondered if it happened to everyone who has one and if they have the same issue when in the sun. I have yet to see someone with a black out tattoo at the beach 😂
@omgdisfunny4852
@omgdisfunny4852 Жыл бұрын
i mean.. if you have tattoos they shouldn't just be out directly in the sun anyway.. it fades the tattoo... but its probably super noticeable on blackouts because its supposed to all be 1 shade. thats why you also only ever see people with awful damaged and faded tattoos out at the beach

As a black man I relate to his experiences of being in public & getting the feeling of being shunned without words & twice with words… I don’t even have tattoos yet. From my knowledge, every one of those times were unprovoked. Several times in public people have looked at me with worry/disgust while gesturing the sign of the cross before passing me by or when I enter a shop. I dress regular aka not scary… maybe it’s my beautiful locs that scare them haha? Regardless idgaf because I know the truth. I pray one day we all genuinely accept/love one another regardless of the outside.
@maldenfoster
@maldenfoster 2 жыл бұрын
Speaking as a white person that has black friends that has had this conversation with white people (because I don’t understand the fear) if you have locs that is probably what scares them considering that you dress like a regular dude. Idk why but any time I ask someone I see as fearful or even racist they never understand the spiritual/religious/cultural reasons behind growing locs they just see it as a dirty ghetto hairstyle (ik it’s not but they do) anyways as soon as I explain to them the reasons of growing and compare directly to other examples in white culture (like for certain religious groups not shaving) they understand it a bit more. It sucks you deal with that u seem to be an introspective person who is smart (considering you even think of issues like this) wish more people judged people by character first

I've black sleeve and I'm heavily tattooed from my ankles to my neck and when people ask from me how was the process/pain, I tell them that for me it was going beyond the stage when you either vomit or faint, the best description is spiritual experience for me. The last sessions had to be done with numbing cream, I just wasn't into that pain anymore. I know how it feels. Now after 2 years of no tattoos I could carry on again and take more black. I'm considering facial tattoos as seen in my profile picture.
