Reminder: honing tones, individual sounds, stressed syllables in sentences, and intonations are equally important if you want to speak natural and "fluent" Mandarin Chinese, or any language in fact! Most curricula stop at the very beginning of helping Mandarin learners build up a solid foundation of the Chinese sound system, and it's rare for students to have proper separate training for their pronunciation from traditional vocabulary and grammar learning! BUT now you can join my “Finding Your Mandarin Voice” pronunciation training program on www.RitaChinese.com Hear Putonghua clearly, and speak CRISP Chinese by the end of 2022!

Lisa is really good at repeating words or phrases in a foreign language when someone teaches her. I've seen her do it with Tagalog, Indonesian, and Vietnamese. Her fans would teach her simple phrases and she would repeat them almost perfectly. It's really cool to see. She's just so freakin' adorable I love this girl lol.

6:26 I think this concept applies greatly for french natives when learning english, and probably also the other way around. The words spelling being exactly the same for so many words can make you skip a few step when it comes to pronunciation. Especially when reading in your head.

Thai is also my first language, so it was fascinating to see you trying out the Thai tones. I'm glad you decided to keep in the segment explaining how you think the tones line up between the two languages. That was incredibly helpful! You nailed almost all of the Thai tones except for the low tone at 5:59. To me, it lines up with the 3rd tone of Mandarin, but only the first half where it dips down without the second half where it rises up, e.g. like when the 3rd tone is followed by other words so you only pronounce the first half.

It's one of her skills to learn and speak different languages, lots of people barely speak their mother language fluently.

I really struggled learning French at school as a native English speaker, and hated learning it. It makes sense now with how you describe negative transfer! Maybe that's why I like learning Chinese because there is so little transfer.

As a fluent Vietnamese and English speaker, I've been learning Mandarin and I find that it helps a lot because I know Vietnamese. It's a lot easier me to hear and differentiate the tones of similar spelling words than my English speaking only counterparts.

I believe she can speak 3 languages fluently (English, Korean and Thai) but she knows very basic Chinese and probably Japanese. The rest of the languages she only knows words/sentences.

Hi Rita I am a very big fan of yours! I love your videos and they are helping me a lot in this journey of learning 普通话. But I have a very important question to you and I would be eternally gratefull if you could help me! I am Mexican but my mother´s grandfather was Chinese, so I am 1/8 chinese. The thing is my mother has this cool second name that here in Mexico is pronounced and written "Juy" The J is pronounced strongly and with the throat because that is the way we say it in Spanish, like when you say the word "Jarra" in Spanish or "Justo" "Jalar", etc. The Y is pronunced like an e in the english word "England" or "Email" or like an i on Spanish. My question is Do you know what would be the 汉字 of this particular second name? I am sure the pronunciation is not similar to any other character I know on Mandarin so maybe it is another Chinese language or maybe the pronunciation is very different from how is pronounced on China, please help me Rita! It would be very meaningful to me!
