Blackpool Tower 'Fire' Incident

A reported fire at the top of Blackpool Tower on Thursday afternoon December 28th was found to be an orange sheet of tarpaulin blowing in the wind & lit up by sunlight. The flapping tarpaulin looked convincingly like flames, however there was no smoke. A man was also arrested at Blackpool Tower on suspicion of breach of the peace.

my dad told me the tower was on fire and my first thought was Stephen will be down there as fast as he can go lol Funny that it turned out to only be reflective orange netting blowing and not an actual fire, glad everyone is safe and theres no danger or damage to the tower. It did look like a fire on the video BBC news were showing though so I can see why it escalated as much as it did.

This just proves how fast the media are to see and believe anything and instantly jump straight to the scene without actually using common sense, a fire.. that is on the top of the metal structure's roof... is burning.. without any smoke, might give that fire an offer in the Blackpool circus cause that is a pretty cool trick.

I wouldn't have thought that there's very much that could fuel a fire up there, unless it's been blown in, as you say. I don't think they even use flammable paint these days...!

If there had really been a fire up there, only thing that could really catch or start a fire is the electrics for the lights etc, and probably the grease from the lift motors.

Thank Goodness it was just a false Call, but all credit to the Emergency services who were on scene very quickly, thanks Stephen for being so supportive and helpful to be able to record the information regarding the incident about the Blackpool tower, my heart sank when I heard the news about it, stay safe and keep well to all the people who live there, let's hope that nothing else happens before the years out, they have witnessed so much with dreadful hotel that caught fire early this year, again thank you for another great video and God bless our Emergency services and keep safe, let's hope it's going to be a good 2024 year for Everyone, as I know so well, I work for our NHS service in otley west Yorkshire as a porter, happy New year Everyone stay safe always, God bless you always.

When I was 8 my dad took me fishing off the pier ( this was in the 70s) on the train to Blackpool I begged him to take me up the tower . ( with fishing rods and baskets ) when the tower came into view I noticed the lifts going up and down ( dad said they had no lifts and we had to climb steps to the top ) I asked dad if they where lifts we could see and he said. Look like they are taking it down . So.I never got to the tower

I first heard about this down South via Mi-Soul Radio’s 5pm news bulletin last night, via Radio News Hub. Even then they reported the tower was on fire. Afterwards I quickly Googled it and one other source mentioned the orange netting blowing in the wind. I immediately thought to check for one of vlogs to get more accurate local information. When I saw the video the lack of smoke made me think it was not a fire, then I found a zoomed in shot and you could see it was not flames . Glad it was not a fire better safe than sorry but I would of thought tower staff would of known about the netting and stopped so much disruption. Good training exercise I suppose for if there ever is a real fire.

A man was arrested over this incident. Allegedly he had climbed up to the top of the tower and started a fire, which is what people saw and reported, but either he put it out or it was blown out by the wind.
