Blacksmith Rivet Tool From Scrap High Carbon Steel

Forging rivet tools from scrap ball bearing, spring and railroad track steel. Never made or used this kind of blacksmith dome head rivets before, so these aren't very clean or precise. Actually I'm very surprised of how hard it is to make and set rivets, specially steel ones, so congrats to those that make and use them on a regular basis. It really is way more hard work than it looks!
The tools I forged are sized for 8mm round stock, you can see the one I made of steel is too short, I underestimated twice how much material is needed for the domes, it's quite a lot!
Brass one was sized better, but brass work hardens a lot and I was not able to set it all the way, it should be annealed to have it dome fully.
Finally the aluminum one was a joy to make, it's super soft and sets nicely. But I cut the round stock a bit too long! So, as I've said, harder than it looks.
Not sure if I'll ever make steel ones again. I'd need way more practice to make them look good.
Aluminum ones on the other hand are fun to set but it's not the best fastening material so they would be good only for esthetics.
Index of operation and materials:
0:03 Railroad track steel
0:13 Remove bearing cage
0:54 Angle iron piece to hold the ball bearing, hole deeply countersunk
1:20 Stick weld the bearing from underneath
1:40 Angle grinder to clean the weld
2:25 Cut the railroad track steel in two with metal cutting bandsaw (steel annealed off camera)
2:40 8mm hole drilled for the rivet spacer
3:20 Hole drilled for handle
3:44 Tapped to M8
4:00 Hot cut a section of spring steel
4:40 Upsetting one end to make it thicker
5:20 Smooth the rough forged steel with 2x72 belt grinder
5:30 Hardening with coke forge, heat to non magnetic and quench in water (I tested both steel before)
5:55 Steel hardened
6:06 Remove scales with bench grinder and steel wire wheel
6:20 Tempering with residual heat of forge
9:02 Brass rivet made the same way
9:28 Aluminum one as well!
Thanks a lot for watching, I hope you liked the video!

If you heat the rivet up before you start striking the second head, it will make a better join as the metal will contract afterwards when it cools off. That will sandwich the pieces of metal together better. Great video though, keep them coming!

When I upset the end of a piece, I try not to touch it to the anvil face until the hammer is hitting it (in order to prevent the anvil from drawing the heat out too rapidly). I can't tell if you were doing that, but the theory behind it seems to have merit. Always enjoy your work! Ciao.

Nice work! To make the work easier, i recommend to weld a piece of square tube or 2 pieces of angle iron beneath your bottom tools, acting as a hollow hardy shank. That prevents the bottom tools from wandering aroung on the anvil face and leaves space to push the rivet out. Stück davon Christoph

As a toolmaker, some parts really make my hair stand on end... For the layman, it probably looks very good, but as a professional, it's just bad in parts. For example, at 3:43 you use a ready-made tap for the thread instead of the whole set, which consists of 3 steps, or a machine tap. You're lucky it didn't break off.

judging by how it flies around when you strike it with a regular hammer, I would be afraid it would accidentally hit your rivet with the edge of the tool and mess it up.

Homemade rivets. In the loosest sense you're stapling metal together without forging. This is one of those videos where on it's own you think "okay?" but sooner or later it's going to come back in later projects.

If someone already mentioned it, sorry for the repeat. You need 1.5 x the diameter for a rivet head. So for 8mm stock, 12mm is the proper amount for a head. This is kinda universal. So for say 6mm stock, 9mm would be enough for the head. Hope this helps!

Nice job, but I have to ask, why? Welding, forge welding, or even bolts are probably a better option for joining things, so the only reason left is aesthetics, but You could easily just fake it if all you wanted was the look. You could drill a hole, stick a half sphere on it (I guess you could make those?) and then weld it from the other side. I can't think of any reason to have a real rivet on both sides of something other than historical accuracy or masochism. Why punish yourself?
@opfipip3711
@opfipip3711 4 жыл бұрын
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rivet#Applications TLDR: If you can't/won't weld the material (deformation, ascetics, or simply unsuited materials), rivets are superior to bolts for permanent connections. Their main problem are high costs in automatic fabrication, which is not relevant in this case.
