Good on you Chandler, some more content, especially as it is a project that is not so common and it turned out great! Cheers.

I've found the plastic tool handles at Brownells to be very helpful for all my files and projects. The L4 is 3 3/4" long-11/64" hole that's 2" deep. I drill a 1/8" hole, 1/2" shorter than the tang of the tool. Then just increase the drill bit a 1/16th going 1/2" less than the first. Just continue the process till your file or whatever fits almost perfectly. This method is great to fairly accurately do the same as you did with your awl in deer antler. Will definately make a half dozen awls like yours. I was saving my antlers for the perfect project. Thanks for this video.

Chandler, where are you, hope you ok man! You have a rare ability, being able to cobble together and bodge things to make them work! Its a skill thats becoming very rare good luck to you and hope you get back to us! Have always loved the ‘need a tool, make a tool’ approach to problems, shows you have a brain!

I'll be making one too Jim! Most likely Bekki will use it more than I will, but I'm excited to make it. No antlers around here though so I will just use a good hardwood. Have fun at quad state. Say hi to folks for us.

Try the antler the other way around, the tine end holding the metal and the 'rose' as a sort of pommel. Round off the skull bone to fit you hand nicely. Has worked very well for me with some hard used tools. As the antler is a bone with marrow it is somewhat porous in the inside although it differs from antler to antler and very much from species to species. Splendid to see you in what looks to be good spirits!

Not bad at awl... I see what you did there :) I'd say the best business is support of fellow makers and crafts people. If you make good tools, the orders will come rolling in. Spoon gouges, whittling knives, awls, hardy tools, hammers, hold downs. Yeah, an experienced 'smith will make their own, but a young hobbyist or starter will buy the gear to get them moving.

Im thinking the inside of Antler will move some because of how porous it is but the horn its self will crack if you force anything to bug into it so the actual hole needs to be the right size i would think just not the depth.

That one I think he would have to charge about $30 for. If he did more than one at a time, shouldn't be too difficult to get it below $20 and still turn a profit

ANTLER TIP, TAKE THEM OUTSIDE AND BOIL IT, IT STINKS LIKE HELL BUT GIVE IT 20 MINUTES AND PUT IT IN A VICE AND LEAVE IT, WHEN IT COOLS AND DRIES IT'LL STAY IN THE FORM YOU LEAVE IT
