Cool review. Great to see anything to do with Blackstar. Even with its flaws I'd have loved this playset. I use to always hope he'd make a come back, but seeing what happened to so many faborites when rebooted, I'm now more hoping he stays under the radar. What a shame.

I know it skews a lot younger than a lot of the toys you usually review, but I'd kinda like to see you guys go over the vintage Fisher Price Little People Castle. It was one of my favorite toys as a kid, I used it as the main castle for every fantasy faction I had (heroic kings, spooky hauntings, the base of operation from which Megatron and Mr. Sinister and the evil Lego minifigures would wage war on my good guy toys like Bat Man, Spider Man, and the majority of my Lego and Fisher Price figures). It's definitely not devoid of details on the inside, either.

Nice review! I know nothing about Blackstar so these things are a real eye-opener. This playset can be filed under 'shell' that looks good from the front. Damn, it's clear why GI Joe ruled the playsets of the 80's.

I'm amazed yours arrived in one piece. Years back, I ordered one complete in box. When it arrived, I opened it to find a box full of shredded blue plastic. I have no idea how any of these survived being played with.

What were the characters that you used as fodder for the cannon? I have several different ones in my toys from when I was a kid, but for the life of me can't remember what they're called or where they came from? They were packed in with another figure if I recall correctly, but maybe I'm wrong.

The main base doesn't even look like a pour-molded piece. It looks like just a vacuum-formed outer shell, with molded pieces (stairs, gun torrent, ledge, etc.) to disguise it. With today's material, you could probably recast it from the inside and make stronger thermoformed duplicates, then use the molded pieces from the broken one to complete it. Maybe customize some design improvements, if you wanted. :) (and loved the muppets reference.lol)
@stevenwalton817711 жыл бұрын
***** There are youtube tutorials for just about everything on it. I'm planning to build a thermoformer out of an old electric grill, a vacuum, and some plywood, when I get enough cash for the wood. (Once I found out that's how the Star Wars helmets and Storm Trooper armor was made, I was like "Oh hell, I can do that".lol) The hard part would be reinforcing the outside, so the weight of the mold doesn't damage it. Maybe you could ask Stiltbeaststudios or Brickintheyard how to go about it, as pulling molds is part of what they do for a living. :)
@stevenwalton817711 жыл бұрын
***** No problem. I figure if nothing else, a vacuum-former might come in handy for the cosplay conventions, and could probably thermoform some sweet new display stands for figures who never got them. ;)

I know it would destroy the idea of it being original but do we know if anyone has tried putting an epoxy resin coating on one of these? Smooth-On sells a product that kinda does what I'm saying. Just look up on KZbin "Strengthening a 3D Powder Print with XTC-3D Epoxy Resin Coating" on Smooth-On's KZbin channel. Might make an interesting video if you can find a broken castle for cheap to test it on...at least a piece of it. Big question since I'm not a collector is how much would it depreciate the value if you did that to it? I would think any means to preserve a loose one of these castle would be justified because they are so fragile.

Hang a big "Do Not Disturb" sign on that playset. Actually don't hang the sign on there at all. The massive weight of a Post it Note may cause the thing to implode. Seriously... How do you plan to safely store such a fragile/rare piece?
@Sturmdude11 жыл бұрын
The lack of details on the inside of play-sets is still a problem today. The Power Team Elite World Peace Keepers Battlefield by M&C toys is an extraordinary culprit. It's essentially a two story middle-eastern building. It's really popular amongst G.I. Joe fans who still collect new stuff. It is featured in several dioramas. It has a commanding presence. It towers over most contemporary play-sets, like the lame Tower of Omens that Bandai made in 2011. You can literally create a battle with dozens of Joes and Cobras in,on, and around it. The outside looks fantastic as it is very well detailed and painted. However, the inside is barren. It's just tan plastic. There is a serve paucity of detail and what few details are on the inside remain unpainted. It has to make up for the barren inside by also having a bunch of cheap figures and accessories like boxes, crates, motorcycles, barrels, sand bags, and weapons.
