When I watched this movie in theaters I kept thinking, I didn't want it to end, I was immersed in the world and the movie. It raises many questions that make you think about life and the meaning of life. It also sets the stage for a fantastic 3rd movie, one that we may never see come, but can only imagine.

I remember seeing the movie in theaters. It was just me and the film in front of me, it was quite the experience with the story, sound, and visuals. You know, it's a good film that even as you walk out of the theater, it still takes time to come back to reality because you have become so immersed in it. That you feel like stepping back into the world when you leave those doors.

You're very lucky. The first time I saw it, in the theater, the asshole in front of me kept rocking his chair, sighing, checking his phone, and crumpling his popcorn bag. It was at that moment that I decided the movie-theater going experience was dead for me. I enjoyed this movie only the second time I watched it. At home, in the peace and quiet of my own home.

@@segatasanchiro6334 I hate that your movie-going experience has been ruined by assholes. I mean, I have had my share of bad experiences like when I went to see Godzilla (2014) the theater was filled with toddlers and a crying baby four seats away from me. Now I wait till the movie is obviously on its way out before I go see it. It's usually less of a crowd that day. But for Blade Runner 2049, I didn't have to. Because back then we had two theaters, the big one that everyone went to and the smaller one right next to it only a few people went to. So I went for the smaller one, and I'm glad I did. Because it was a wonderful time by myself.

notice the parallels to Goslin's death scene to Rutger's; both in some sort of precipitation , rain then snow to represent their perspective on their place in this world and individuality. it shows while Rutger was scared of being a "tear lost in the rain" an individual lost among so many replicants, meaningless unless remembered in death. Goslin's character embraced his state of being in the end, sure he was one of millions of pieces of snow, but "each snowfakes are unique" and have value in that; and worth dying for. its a good visual through line of each character's perspective on the same subject. this film is definitely a worthy successor, yes. a perfect modernized homage

True that tt wasn't shot in 4K exactly, though it was still shot in 3.4K which is a big step up from the 2K/1080p res of regular Blurays. Sadly most 4K Blurays of modern films are still pointless anyways, as most current modern films had their VFX shots produced, edited and composited at only 2K due to excessive time demands on rendering CG VFX at higher resolutions. Hopefully advances to rendering software and computer hardware will mean all CG VFX will be produced in at least 4K in the future.

One of the aspect of this movie that I loved the most was how K/Joe went from normal to special and back again. The scene where the child is revealed to be a girl and K is absolutely crestfallen followed by K realizing that Joi was just a run of the mill AI programmed to say what you want to hear and the ad version of her even called him “Joe” also, which I believe shows that even that was just a part of her programming, really brought home the feeling that K was just a normal replicant with nothing special other than a shared memory or two instead of being born special or “the chosen one”. And only after that did he choose to save Deckard himself, revealing that he was special after all, but not because he was born that way, because he became special on his own. Also the scene of K watching snowflakes hit his hand and kind of realizing what it’s like to be human and then cut to the daughter with fake snow at the end, who as a real being can’t feel those same things. Tripping me out on what it means to be alive.
@oneopinion6806
@oneopinion6806 Жыл бұрын
I agree on some of what you're saying about K, but I disagree on Joi (though I do think the large advert was there to grind that doubt into him). If Joi was simply functioning within the realms of her programming it would seem odd for her to attempt to subvert her programmers' will by having herself removed from the mainframe to only exist on the remote device. But then again this disagreement I think is the true idea/challenge of the film--what if "life" or "humanity" was defined by the very act of stepping beyond base programming. Disregarding spirituality, even standard human babies are born initially just with DNA programming. They then build up experiences that can go beyond that initial programming. We look at K, who was simply doing his job--his programming--until he was exposed to something more and stepped beyond his programming. Luv was a replicant that initially was simply complying with her programming. But as the story progressed there were clear actions and statements that seemed to go beyond just doing what Wallace programmed. This was most clear when she kisses K and viciously says "I'm the best one." She's being driven by something there. Coming full circle my opinion on Joi is she also moves beyond simple programming, or put another way has accumulated enough direct experience as an instance of the programming as to call into question whether her existence also might not qualify as a form of life. The movie is wonderful artistically, but also for these philosophical possibilities.

Every shot could be a painting within itself. Stunning! I saw it in the cinema, a bunch of lads walked out half way through and I was like "be gone!" 😂 Eldon Tyrell said Racheal was special, now maybe he meant extended life span or that she has to ability to procreate over other models. Also I like how K has to fight with Luv but losses his Joi. 😭 Clever stuff. Also side note: Could Wallace be some kind of clone from Tyrell? Being blind does marry up to Tyrell loosing his eye's moments before death...Shower thoughts.

2:43, fun fact: this was originally the opening scene for Blade Runner as written by Hampton Fancher, where Deckard introduces himself and shoots the guy, removed his jaw to show his serial number, calls in a SWAT team to retrieve the body, and smokes a cigarette. The guys dog begins to bark at him, until he says, "Shut up", and the dog backs away.

This is one of the most visually stunning films I've ever seen. Also, I liked (1) it didn't try too hard to replicate the original, looks-wise -- it was very much its own film, and (2) it averted the too-easy "K is Deckard's son" thing. And it pretty much answers the question as to whether or not Deckard is a replicant: Rachel was "special" because *she* could procreate, not Deckard.
@Theomite
@Theomite 3 жыл бұрын
I thought the film more or less evaded the answer of Deckard's humanity. Replicants could be manufactured without an expiration date (Bryant is the one who tells Deckard they even have one at all), and who says they can't age? I think they refused to answer definitively so they could get Harrison Ford to agree to be in the movie. He's always been on the "Deckard is Human" train and saying otherwise would probably piss him off.

The story of JOI is where BR 2049 is implicitly at its most subversive (much as Ex Machina is quite explicitly so) in presenting a non-biological/purely digital character as acting "like a real girl" - indeed as the most "human" character in the film while quite brutally suggesting (in the "good Joe" scene) that it was all just programming. At least some viewers were left with a small nagging voice in the back of their heads asking: "wait a minute, aren't ALL humans programmed by a combination of their innate hardware architecture and environment/experience-derived software?" (The latter is a paraphrase of the line spoken by Oscar Isaac in Ex Machina when he responds to objections from his young employee who insisted HE wasn't programmed!)

As I've mentioned before, I love Blade Runner 2049 much more than the first film. There's a ton of reasons for that. Part of that is just the narrative is much better. Blade Runner is a film of it's time, elaborate dialogue, some not-too-expensive action, lots of 'real' (they actually happened in front of a camera) special effects. Blade Runner 2049 is a film of it's time; dialogue scraped down to the bare bone so it doesn't matter if the watchers don't hear it, lots of digital environments to keep costs down, silence standing in for emotion as in when Dekard confronts the company man.

Re Luv: One of the odd lines Luv delivers is when she is explicitly supposed to be taking Deckard "off-world" and Deckard asks her where they are going. She answers "Home" without any obvious sense of irony or sarcasm in her delivery. That had me wondering - especially after she clearly stated she would lie to Wallace about the circumstances in which she killed Joshi - if this was intended to suggest she had some other, hidden agenda with regard to the "great change" she referred to when killing Joshi. Her overall performance gave me the impression of her being a very complex, subtle personality - notwithstanding her often child-like emotional outbursts.

Dave Batista is a replicant and he's been living on his own for over 30 years, which is why he looks so old. Nexus 8 have an open livespan, unlike their predecessors. The intro titles mention that. For that reason Deckard could still be a replicant. He'd have to be a Nexus 8 or a more recent model.
@Henrik_Holst
@Henrik_Holst 3 жыл бұрын
The Nexus 8 came out one year after the end of the first film but of course he could have been an early experimental model. However what I find problematic with the whole "is Deckard a replicant" is that there exists zero reasons for Tyrell and the Police to go through all that hoops, conspiracy and secrecy to just make Deckard a replicant since there is no upside to either of them for doing so.
@Pssybart
@Pssybart 3 жыл бұрын
@@Henrik_Holst Rachael was a Nexus 7. It is unclear whether she had an open livespan since she died so early. Ridley Scott's reasoning behind Deckard being a replicant is that it was done as an experiment. Tyrell would've wanted to test whether they could engineer two replicants who would fall for each other purely due to mathematical probability. The fact that Tyrell went as far as to create a replicant who could bear children and keep that a secret makes it more probable that he would stage such a thing. I'm a bit on the fence over whether Deckard is or isn't a replicant. But I do like that this theory gets adressed. It just opens so many questions about humanity, and whether human feelings can be replicated artificially.
@Henrik_Holst
@Henrik_Holst 3 жыл бұрын
@@Pssybart So instead of doing this experiment in a controlled manner he instead goes out of his way in an elaborate conspiracy in cahoots with the LAPD in the middle of a Nexus 6 uprising event and he also reveals to Decker that Rachel is a replicant to spoil his own experiment? Next thing you know his baseline is off and he's the one being hunted. * When he finds out it's really not his from Freysa, he then basically goes on a mission to find himself. To do what HE thinks is worth dying for, saving Deckard and revealing to him who his daughter is. Her being a designer of replicant memories, indicates why he had the memory in the first place. It was a remnant of her very own, "a piece of the artist". * On the philosophy, thinking about the fact you recognized there are SO MANY REPLICANTS in this movie, they seem to be everywhere, even more part of "every day society" than before. Plus they've been improved to have "open ended lifespans". Literally the only thing left humans could do over them was breed, now that's gone, big implications. What Deckard and Anna decide to do with that information, would have to be the basis of any future movies. Edit: Deckard's humanity is still very much vague, as he does very much in fact look OLDER than he did in the first movie lol

This movie doesn't get rid of the theory that Deckard was a Replicant, it suggests that he and Rachel were Tyrell's prototypes for Replicants capable of reproducing. He did arrange their first meeting, after all, and was always capable of making Replicants which could live longer, if originally built that way. The bigger question, and why this is equal or not better to the original, is Joy. Did she love, or was she just a simulation? It's almost a better mystery, because no one even asks if she could be?

You know, hate, love, fear, anger, envy. So they built in a failsafe device." This was for the mass produced, general release Replicant. Tyrell/ Wallace could, in theory not include this failsafe in any of his own non mass produced ‘unique’ models, such as Rachel etc. They could add other non-standard features as well.

So, the thing about Luv's arc: because replicants don't have a long lifespan and have no real emotions, they try really hard to have strong emotions. That's why Leon wanted his photos in the first movie. So, Luv tries to be loyal on her own accord to her boss, even though she has literal programming that forces her to do what she does AND she might have actual feelings developed that are contrary to her commands. Remember that single tear she sheds? But then she doubles down on her mission with her emotions.

I agree about Wallace. I do wish his character had been a little more fleshed out and his god complex wasn't laid on so thick. However, I think there is more to Luv than just being Wallace's Terminator enforcer. I think she's engaged in a one-sided sibling rivalry with K. She views Wallace as a father whereas he probably sees her as only slightly better than the average replicant. You can kinda see the animosity on her face when K is surprised that Wallace named her. Outwardly, I think she tries to project the image that she's better and more special than other replicants, while privately she's probably extremely insecure about her relationship with Wallace. I think the idea that K could be a replicant's child or even that he'd be involved in the discovery of one is extremely threatening to her perhaps because it would devalue her in Wallace's eyes. The essence of Luv's character I think culminates in the ending fight scene between her and K when she says: "I'm the best one." It's a bit heavy handed but that line gives me the impression that she's been having this very sad and internal one-sided battle to prove herself.

I think this may honestly be my favorite movie of all time. The ruminations on what it is to be human, the controls we place on others and the that others place on us to deprive humanity for the purpose of profit and how to break that cycle of abuse by replacing it with self sacrifice and hope combine with awe striking visualizations of a dying earth create a piece of cinema that will last at least as long as it's previous entry. It takes the concept of the first movie; the villains as victims as saviors, and echoes and expands it to every character in this story except for Deckard's child, isolated from humanity but also more in touch with it than those who must live amongst it. I think Denis Villenueve is redefining science fiction from the flashy spectacle it has become in the last several decades and reasserting the philosophical thought that drove it when technology failed to fill the gaps. By the way, if you guys could give A Scanner Darkly a shot, that would be cool.

Not robots, genetically engineered life forms. Deckard and Rachel were the first of a new breed, a grand experiment by Tyrell; false implanted memories, no built in life span and the ability to self replicate. Interesting to think that the first time Deckard gets picked up by Gaff and taken to the station, he may be 'fresh off the production line'. That would explain Gaff's obvious suspicion of him... Maybe many of Deckards memories were actually Gaffs... At the end of the day, the films creator has gone on record to say that Deckard is a replicant. The writers opinions don't count for much as they were both controlled by Ridley Scott and if he wasn't happy with anything they wrote they had to rewrite to what he wanted, their ignorance of Ridley's intentions shouldn't be misread. I would say the reason the Wallace corporation wanted Deckard so much in this film (blade runner 2049) was precisely because he was the 'Adam' to Rachel's 'Eve' of the Nexus series and had the ability to self replicate, which was what Wallace wanted so much but was unable to make reality despite his best efforts. Oh, and 'Arrival' is a good call, but it's a film that should be watched twice. The second time around you'll understand much more and enjoy much more. Not back to back though, let it stew a while.
