I watched the reel over on IG this morning. I appreciate the look and what they are trying to do. No way I am letting that thing anywhere near my knives though. Thanks for letting us know this exists, David. Stay well.

A little background,I'm a chef use my knives all day every day, normally I sharpen my own on the old school Norton tristone...but I decided to give this a try at Ace hardware,I got mixed results,3 of my 4 knives(an old Henkel slicer,a shun slicer,and a San Mai yoshikane was gyuto) came out ok,need touching up on a steel or strop.the 4th knife (a very heavy thick bladed shun)has no edge whatsoever.probably won't do it again,just put the time on the stone myself next time
@BladeBanter2 жыл бұрын
Yeah it is the same result I got, I think it's going in the right direction, but it needs a finishing step. And the person operating the machine needs to be able to look and rerun the blade if needed.

@@BladeBanter before he started my first knife,I asked him what degree the edge will be...his reply was "I don't know,I just operate the machine."that was a big red flag.but live and learn...
@BladeBanter2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I found if I remember right it was about 18 degrees I contacted the company and they said I could go back and have it redone, but that felt odd to say hey resharpen this again please and I'm not paying for it. I even offered to send the knife to them to see the result first hand, they declined.
@marshalllaw1232 жыл бұрын
Funky! Both could use a good stropping to clean that edge up. If they added stropping compound to those cleaning flapwheels that thing would do a WAY better job.
@BladeBanter2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I reached out and the company felt that the result should have been better, and said I could bring it back and have it redone, but its really out of the way and was an interesting experince.

Yeah of course it was worth a try and if they stick to it they could have a really good product, just needs refinement.

Good video. Thanks. I also tried Resharp at my local Ace Hardware. Curious, like your results, the 7" kitchen knife (sharpened first) has a 14º bevel and a 19º micro-bevel (as best I could determine with my goniometer). Though I don't know for sure, I think both of these bevels were created by the Resharp machine and not by any sharpening prior to this one at Ace Hardware. The 4" kitchen knife (sharpened second) has a single bevel that appears to be 19º. (Wow, two different results. I am not sure what to make of this.) My at-the-store cut testing, using phonebook paper I had brought, proved both edges were just okay. They cut the flimsy paper but not too well. The cutting was ragged and jerky, which I assumed was due to leftover burr. When I arrived home, I looked at each edge in a magnifier and saw coarse ground bevels with leftover burrs. I leather-stropped each knife at 19º with 6µm diamond emulsion. This removed the burrs fairly well. Still, each apex is quite coarse, but I like my sharpenings to be 'toothy,' so I'm pleased with the coarse grind. As the Resharp created bevels were quite even and the knives cut reasonably well and much much better than before, guess I might recommend Resharp for kitchen knives if the owner is not overly picky and wants the convenience of 'while you wait' at the local Ace Hardware Store. Otherwise, probably better to bring your knives to a human who is in the business of sharpening and cares about providing excellent service.

My wife was tired of our dull knives and had them sharpened using this method. We’ve been very happy with the results. I took my mid-tier tactical/EDC knives ($150 range) to the same store and had them do the same, again I’m very pleased. Warn your family members before hand as these are lethal!
@BladeBanter2 жыл бұрын
Glad it worked out well for your knives. I think it comes down to the operators too as it seems if they are aware of the results, they will adjust or rerun the knife.
@toddcarr.2 жыл бұрын
Interesting method for those that have no sharpening experience but like you said needs to be refined afterwards with a hone or stropping belt. Definatly not for me though as I think it doesn't deal with inherent problems like uneven bevels and such. For really large knives the grind might be too thin also. Thanks for the look see and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.
@BladeBanter2 жыл бұрын
I reached out to the company and they said it should not have left that type of edge and suggested I go back and they can correct it. I think with the machine the stores need to have a versed person that will run it through again if they see the edge isn't to expectations. It can take care of the uneven grind but might take running it through twice.
@NeevesKnives2 жыл бұрын
Honestly I can see all the problems with a machine or service like this, I think it's OK if you don't care about edge retention or edge quality. But I completely understand why someone would like this if their knife is only 10$. But I personally would never allow any of my knives through a system like this, possibly old kitchen knives.
@BladeBanter2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was apprehensive about sending my knife through but it was for the research so had them do it. It might do well but in a pinch but agree wouldn't be sending your collection through. It could be refined to do decently but might be there a few versions down the road.

I'll wait a few years for this to be upgraded and people get more familiar with it. If i ever come across one, I'll definitely try it just for the hell of it (not one of my favorite edc knives, I'll use my work knives that I wouldn't care about if it got damaged for being used as a chisel or screwdriver 😂) just to see what I'd end up with, if it'll actually work, damage the blade or if I get an employee who can't tell their ass from a hole in the ground and they make they screw it up by not getting it measured right
@BladeBanterАй бұрын
Yeah definitely a big hold up is the training and use of the tool. There is a downside that is engineered into it is it will not get the tip well as they found it might break the tip off.

Super thanks for doing this - nice vid! A good use case that I will try if I find one of these in my area is a cheaper M390 reprofile (e.g. $100 Giant Mouse ACE Iona - it took me 1.5 hours on a wicked edge to go from 20° to 17° - I would gladly pay $7 for a symmetrical edge regrind to save me the first 1h 15m).

@BladeBanter2 жыл бұрын
Yeah it might be a time saver for a reprofile. I was really interested as I thought before, why don't they have a machine like the key cutting machines for knives. And there we go. It's got potential.
@paul_schuette2 жыл бұрын
@@BladeBanter That’s a good point on a reprofile, especially if you’re talking about a super steel. It would at least get you close, and then you could refine it from there. I’ve found that hardware stores usually give you a somewhat serviceable edge when they sharpen knives, but that’s about it. This seems to fall in line pretty well with that trend. It amazes me how many people use their kitchen cutlery to the point of the edge being completely blunt. So, to them, this would probably seem like a miracle machine. I would also think that simple blade profiles would work best (think typical non-bolstered chef knife). I’m sure the variability of pocket knife blades are much harder for the machine to follow. Like you said, it probably has potential, just needs some refinement.
