I'm sold already based on the fact that they are compatible with so many consoles. Always a great practice to state that you were sent these controllers to be reviewed. I think that builds trust with the audience. I do like the back of the triggers and how they are similar to new age controllers. I'd get the blade GC due to the position of the sticks. Good to hear the battery life is actually as advertised. I love how in-depth you dive into the triggers especially with the element of MGS. This is the sign of a wonderful and authentic review, you truly reviewed these instead of just unboxing them and playing one or two games with them. That defender controller for the PS3 though.... looks sick. Oh jeez here we go with your love of the PolyMega! Excellent review on these controllers!
@GameCubeGalaxy Жыл бұрын
Oh for sure man! The versatility of these controllers make it such an easy recommendation. And yeah, I like to let viewers know if something was sent to me for review, but still gauge it based on if it's something I spent money on (which I did do for the BladeGC controller). The triggers was something I really wanted to ensure I went in-depth with, since they're an essential part of the GC experience. I tried to think of things I'd ask as a consumer going into this as best as possible, and that was one of the first components I was curious about lol. I really tested out far more games than mentioned, and all worked fantastic. The Defender controller that Retro Fighters makes is also phenomenal for PS1/PS2/PS3 gaming! And yes, I HAD to give a shoutout to the Polymega! Love that console! Glad you enjoyed the review man! Thanks again for checking it out!

I got mine today (BattlerGC), and I gotta say, it's not the same, but it's the next best thing. If you can't get a GameCube type controller that is in the original form factor, this is your guy! I would prefer this over any GameCube controller PowerA offers currently. It's honestly a big controller, which is just what I was looking for, but if you have smaller hands, this won't work for you, even if you play Smash Bros. That being said, the overall quality and feel is phenomenal, especially for a company I have never bought a single product from before. It sucks that it's not regular Bluetooth, but that's made up for by the fact that you can use this on an actual GameCube, or a Wii, or a Wii U, or a PC, or the Switch, like how I've been using it. Until Nintendo decides to buck up and make their own version or until NYXI has sustainable stock of their new Wizard controller, this is your best bet if you want an authentic GameCube feel while playing Smash on a modern console! Also, this controller works wonders for platformers and other games, I had no problem using it with the likes of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Kirby and The Forgotten Land, Super Mario Odyssey, Sonic Colors Ultimate, Portal, Metroid Prime Remastered, and others. If you're more of a retro gamer and prefer older games or modern games like Mega Man 11, Cuphead, or Sonic Mania, or simply a controller that would work well with the Game Boy Player then get the BladeGC with the bigger D-Pad and PlayStation style joysticks. At the price it is though ($45 USD), I would recommend getting the 8BitDo Pro 2 instead, it's essentially the same controller with a regular Bluetooth functionality and phenomenal quality, that controller cannot be beat when it comes to older games on the Switch, Plus it has functionality to work with Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and 2.4 GHz radio frequency (don't quote me on the last one), so you might even be able to get it to work on consoles like the GameCube or PS2 with the proper adapter! The BattlerGC, however, is an excellent choice, especially if you play Super Smash Bros, and there's nothing quite like it on the market, or nothing quite as good in my book.
@AxfNPn3l Жыл бұрын
Nice video I'm pretty happy with mine. I order a lot of Retrofighters stuff and I will support your channel next time. They make pretty good stuff but they have amazing customer service so I like to support them as they are giving life to some older consoles with good controller alternatives. Since it has much improved Z button(s) I can actually use a different grip sometimes. I'm playing Need for Speed Underground, and I can rest my 2nd finger on Z, and my 3rd finger on the R trigger. This grip gives much less fatigue for racing games. I could kind of do this on the original, but couldn't access the face buttons as well and my 3rd finger jammed up against the wall of the controller by the trigger. The gamecube has the best left analog stick in gaming history, and while this doesn't live up to that - it's still pretty good. Let's be honest no 3rd party has ever completely nailed an OEM stick feel, but what matters is it works well and stands on its own. Nice to have a currently manufactured alternative to a Wavebird. I've tried blue retro to use other controllers, but that comes with its own small issues.

Thank you man! Retro Fighters really is an awesome company with great customer service. They are very ergonomic controllers, and agreed that they felt so comfortable to use, even for extended use. 6:20 You have a Defender, so if you get the Mayflash PS2-to-Wii adapter you can use the BattlerGC and/or BladeGC on the Wii U with the Defender's receiver. This is useful for playing Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Super Mario 3D World and Call of Duty Black Ops II, but it may not work with some Wii U games like NBA 2K13 and Injustice. Other than that, you'll still experience button mapping issues for Wii and Wii U games that don't have button remapping.

7:36 Want to know a secret? If you use a non-gray Retro Fighters receiver on the PS3, you will find out that an "unknown device" message appears, and your controller will have the 2P light on. This means the controller is on XInput mode. Hold the Home button until the 1P light appears to enter DInput mode, which is required for use on PS3. You have to do this every time you use a non-gray RF receiver on the PS3. If you have the gray one, DInput/PS3 mode is the default mode, so no need to do the Home button trick. Here's the catch: A/B/X/Y is actually Cross/Circle/Square/Triangle. It works well for overseas games (except Japan and Asia), but if you have Japanese or Asian-region games, be prepared to press the B button as your confirm button. Other than that, it works fairly well with PS3 games, including ones that required the DualShock 3. (Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, NBA 2K series and Gran Turismo 5 & 6 come to mind.) The Home button works as a PS button, but don't hold it too long or else the RF receiver will enter XInput or Digital-only DInput modes. You can legally play your PS one copies with the BladeGC and/or BattlerGC, complete with analog mode functionality. If you used a PS3-supported GameCube controller adapter (like the Mayflash one), L2 and Select buttons would be gutted and you couldn't use the analog mode on PS one games.

Given the issue of fake controllers on Amazon and eBay, this would be useful if you're looking for a GameCube Controller. The problem with these cheap fake controllers is they don't last well compared to the genuine controller. For most GameCube and Wii games, it would work well although the experience may vary with N64 Wii VC titles since some games like Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask can be harder to play on VC due to the control stick on the GCN controller being different from the N64. Yeah, the disappointing thing about the Wii U GameCube adapter is that it only works for Smash Bros. for Wii U. It doesn't work for Virtual Console games and you can't even play Wii games that support GameCube controllers like The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, MySims Racing, and Resident Evil Archives (RE1 and RE0). That is the reason to keep the original Wii since it supported GameCube controllers although modern TVs that lack component ports can be an annoyance. However, a hacked Wii U does make it more useful since it can be used with Nintendont.
@GameCubeGalaxy Жыл бұрын
Well said! Yeah, experiences with N64 games on the Wii VC and Switch Online app vary based on the games of course. The Wii U GameCube adapter is such a disappointment in that it only works for Smash Bros for Wii U, no question. Even the fact it doesn't read the device when in Wii Mode is a headscratcher. The Wii is still a fantastic way to experience the GameCube library, but also modding the Wii U (or Wii) to use Nintendont is a great aspect as well. Thanks for checking out the review!

5:54 This is the only way to play Melee and GameCube games with the correct button mapping on the Wii. You can use a Mayflash PS2-to-Wii adapter and a Retro Fighters Defender receiver, but the button mapping is screwed up, making GameCube games on Nintendon't broken to unplayable (except for the ones with button remapping). Not to mention Not64 doesn't work with these kinds of adapters, but you can use the included GameCube receiver and Not64 will work fine.

Defiantly a great alternative controller for the GameCube and the fact it works on other systems make the price tag much easier to justify (though to be honest, it's not that expensive anyway). It's interesting that they went with a more 8bitdo Pro/Wii Classic Pro Controller design, rather then trying to keep to a similar layout as the original GameCube. Would you consider this a must have, if you already have a wavebird? Also how easy is it to use on Steam? Usually with these types of controllers I have to make them come up as Xbox controllers to function correctly. Great review and look forward to seeing more GameCube accessories.

Absolutely man! It’s definitely an attractive price point. That’s a good point about the controller’s design appearing more like an 8bitdo Pro. Its a shame there is no bump at the end of the trigger pull or a toggle for vibration strength, was also hoping for something like an extra orange c stick that you can swap in. Other than those wishes of mine; this is certainly the wavebird I wish we got 20 years ago. Edit: Question I have is what other game controller does the battler/blades Dpad feel close to? Honestly I wish we could see the 3 button genesis controller dpad (or GBA SP/OG DS Dpad) make a return as I love how there was no give when pressing the middle.

I’ve got a question regarding this controller. Do the A, B, X and Y buttons feel hard to press in comparison to other controllers? If so, do the buttons soften and become easier to press over time after a lot of use? For example, I have a newer PlayStation 5 Duelsense controller where the X, Square, O and Triangle buttons are harder to press in comparison to the Duelsense I got alongside the system in 2021 where the buttons I just mentioned are softer to press as it’s an older controller.
@teneesh3376 Жыл бұрын
I think super monkey ball should have been the main test for the analog stick specifically. I know it's a small thing. But the game doesn't work great with other controllers. The analog stick of the official gamecube controller really gives a lot of precision in that game. So I'm curious. Cause my experience with the defender controller is weird. Cause I tested it on my pc, it registers a perfect square. Which makes precision iffy if players want to be precise. But it works fine in most games. And nerrel shows that the brawler64's stick isn't much better. So I'm wondering if retrofighters improved it at all
@GameCubeGalaxy Жыл бұрын
Good point! I just tested that out this evening, and while I can't state if it registers the controller's analog stick as a "perfect square", I can state that I had no issue breezing through most of the Expert courses, especially using some of the shortcuts I could normally pull off with the GameCube controller. Hope this helps, and thanks for checking out the review!

Hey GCG, is it possible to use these controllers while the Switch is not in the dock? I want to take my Switch on the go but I don’t see how the controller would pair with my switch without the USB. I’m assuming it’s only compatible while the Switch is docked and playing on the TV

It was announced in October 2021 and slated for September 2022 launch originally. They got pushed back a few months due to production issues that have plagued many tech companies the past few years. So one thing i have found that seems to be a plague on third party controllers, there is an unspoken list of games that most seem to have issues with. One game I do own that I have an issue with on a cheaper controller is Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2 where my controller just won't sync with it. Have you found this same issue on that particular game or any others that have issues while using either the BattlerGC or BladeGC controllers? I would hate to spend $40+ on a controller that doesnt support every game like an OG Waverbird or wired controller.

Is there like a list of games that doesn't work with the BattlerGC? So far my experience has been good but I decided to pop in Naruto Clash of Ninja Revolution 2 and the controller would go haywire, made the game unplayable. Thought it was the controller but I tested it with the first Naruto game and it worked fine, I even tested it with a GameCube game and it seems to only be with Clash of Ninja Revolution 2, maybe others. Idk if certain games had a piracy thing with fake controllers or something, so maybe the game is reading it as a non official controller or something? Playing on original hardware, not emulating. Thanks in advance!

Not a fan of the second analogue stick not being coloured yellow and labelled as C stick when it’s modelled after GameCube. Also the z button not labelled or coloured purple feels more like standard Xbox/ps4 style. Had the controller get severe stick drift on left analogue stick hearing reports of it quite often so there are some flaws. Overall build feels strong works good. The instructions for pairing it with a switch isn’t great turning off the controller isn’t easy have to wait for it to time off
