Alot of buck knives , by blade profile design, have the tips fail when used inappropriately. A scumbag took my grandfather's 112 off the table without my permission, stabbed it into the table like a douche and broke the tip off...i was so pissed and young and dumb I said I didnt even want to look at the knife again, i didnt realize I could have had it send back and replaced under bucks forever warranty. I highly recommend buck knives, im about to buy a new one to replace my grandfather's. Its taken me 10 years to get over it lol. Might bring it to the 21st century with an auto. Peace !

Gotta love the iconic Buck 119 special. That was my first Grail fixed blade and I do often carry it on my hip as a general use knife, of course in my rural county it's no problem at all. It's way more than I need when a 2" slipjoint blade often handles everything for me, but sometimes I throw practicality out the window and carry what I like. I won't go as far as carrying some ugly one handed modern folder, but I will carry more than I need sometimes.

If this wasnt answered: "bog oak" is oak taken out of bogs, where the acidity in the bogs dont allow them to degrade and rot. The oak trees are usually hundreds of years old. They have found old Viking ships in England in bogs, that are over a thousand years old-and well preserved. Here in America, generally, these bog oak trees are trees that were felled during the land clearings in the 1800s, and were left behind. One tree, in good condition and decent size, can fetch tens of thousands of dollars.

My first fix blade was a Buck 119. Got it from my dad who got his in the 70’s. My oldest son wanted it, so when he was 19 I just got him his own because I am still using my dad’s. I think my youngest daughter (who loves to camp with me at age 6) will end up getting grandpa’s Buck 119. Gave my oldest daughter my Buck 110 when she was 14 which she loves. She does prefer the folder. Plus, I got my dad’s 1970’s Buck 110, which I will also hand down to one of my twin 4 yr old boys. One of them wants that one, the other has already called dibs on my Esee 5. My dad is still around and loves to see his knives being used. The last great knife he has is the Grohmann #3 army, which will go directly to my 16 yr old son, because I couldn’t wait and bought one for myself.

Yes, bog oak is most likely just some wood pulled from some swamp. This would probably cause some nice spalting along the grain line, then most likely dried and stabilized, so you can use it for handle material.

@blwngt15985 жыл бұрын
Yeah, inventory is BS! I mean it's not like there are that many brands that they sell & it's not like those brands that they carry/sell have but only a couple models that they make. Hell, Spyderco only makes like 4 models so there's absolutely no reason that BHQ can't keep a minimum of 15 units of every version of every model in stock from every maker there is, right? It's too bad that BHQ acts like they have paid up front for every single knife they have in stock, right? Shit, it shouldn't take more than just a couple grand to open up a store like theirs & have an inventory of more than double of what BHQ actually stocks! It's preposterous for them to think that they could get away with not having every knife known to man in stock at all times, no exceptions!
@funnylittlecharacter6925 жыл бұрын
BLWN GT 1 the sarcasm is strong in this one. Lol I agree even though I’d love that they could keep stuff in stock more often. Though this isn’t a perfect world and I shouldn’t expect perfection. My favorite fixed blade working knife= 6” non-serrated ka-bar. I carry it every time I go hunting- it is perfect for field dressing/skinning/hacking at small brush, etc... blade holds an edge under this type of use longer than any other blade I’ve tried. I’d like to see a review of other knives and the small 6” ka-bar- anything that would fit that philosophy of use... that ka-bar has lasted me 16 years- and it’s still a beast.

I carry my Cold Steel spike tanto very regularly. I like the blade design and it is easy to wear as a neck knife or in my pocket. Fast to deploy too in either carry method and the length is perfect for me. The handle is too narrow for my hands but I just wrapped it in paracord for emergency use and added grip. For Kurt - Bog oak is pretty much what it sounds like, but man I want to get my hands on some. And some on a Chris Reeve would be pretty sweet. It is oak, that's been excavated from deep in a peat bog after hundreds or thousands of years (often, I believe either Scotland? I want to say UK somewhere.) The anaerobic (read: without air) environment almost petrifies the wood. And it goes DARK. That's the lightest I've ever seen it, in the video there, it's usually much closer to a true black, like almost ebony. It's some beautiful stuff, still oak, and because it's already been soaked in a swap with acidic peat eating out the minerals in the wood, it's sort of naturally stabilized?-ish? Hope this helps.

Responding to the Buck 0119, I started out at 16 years old hunting deer in Mass & VT & carrying the Buck General 7 1/2" blade. I am a southpaw & the leather sheath is right-handed of course. I looked like a lame "newby" hauling that blade, but I just had to fondle it any chance that I got. I am now 70 & have more blades than 3 people should have, but I figured out decades ago what kind & length blade it takes to dress out a deer "small" is efficient & light. I still take that blade out frequently & the memories come flooding back!!!

I saw a fixed blade knife made in Western Germany by a company called Compass that had leather stacked handle with a leather sheath. It was going for about $9 at that time. I asked my dad if I could get it and he was not normally the one who would let me spend money, so, when he said go ahead I was amazed...anyway I went with my mom, bought it, and still have it in a case in my bedroom that I can see right now!

I bought your favorite Buck 119 special from the Buck Custom shop May 2018, with S30V steel blade, buck eye burl wood handle, brass hardware. Beautiful! The sheath hung sideways. A local sheath maker modified it, so strap was moved to top. Now the knife and the sheath hang vertical. I also bought the Boker Kalashnikov Automatic Knife OD Green (3.25" XHP Satin from Blade HQ with XHP steel, last week. Fantastic. I own the Chris Reeve large Sebenza folder. Another excellent knife, but ugly grey titanium handle. So last week, I had John Grey, custom maker, anadize the handle into beautiful Ben blue. I started carrying a fixed blade daily as an EDC about 2 years ago both in the city and in the woods. Here are a few tips - Stick with blades that are 4 inches or smaller. My go to is a Izula 2, I think its the perfect EDC knife especially for me because for my job I work in National and State Forest areas a lot and its a great outdoor knife and a great every day task knife. I also suggest finding yourself a good quality leather sheath for any fixed blade you plan on carrying. One of the reasons why people dont feel comfortable carrying fixed blades is you feel like you are going to stand out in the crowd... that people are going to eye ball you... Smaller knives in leather sheaths are I believe on the same level as a knife clip hooked on your pocket... people know whats in there but they dont care... a leather sheath is a bit classier and "Grandpa" like than a kydex or nylon tacti-cool sheath. Great EDC fixed blades - Esee Izua 2 with a Charlie Cline leather sheath on ebay Esee Candiru with a Charlie Cline leather sheath on ebay Mora Eldris Tops Baja

@thealarmclock93072 жыл бұрын
These dudes are office workers . Their idea of knife use if fidgeting , opening letters and walking around looking for stuff to cut when they get a new one. The Benchmade bushcrafter is a bushcraft/survival knife.. that's why it's not scandi ground like a regular bushcraft knife. It's got a secondary bevel and a handle shaped for chopping in a pinch.. the knifes handle shape makes alot of sense in actual woods work.. It's total intent is to have Enough Bushcrafter lineage to suffice for that, but tough enough for serious reliability.... The s30 v blade needs sharpening about half as much as a 1095 blade. It's slightly harder to sharpen though. The Benchmade bushcrafter is the best fixed blade of that size in my opinion... I wouldn't trade mine for 5 of any knife they showed...

This is really obscure but I had this knife that belonged to my dad that was a tramontina Brazil- inox stainless steel skinning knife. They used to make more of these knives back in the 70s and 80s. Tramontina is a selling mainly kitchen knives and kitchen ware so it seemed strange to me at first. It's razor sharp as a skinning blade needs to be which isnt a surprise but what I can't get over is the nice full tang construction with beautiful exotic Brazilian wood scales. The grip is so comfortable.

I found one of those Buck knives in the woods this past fall. It was still super sharp after being left out for however long.

First fixed blade knife I really lusted after was the MT-20-39. I saw it at a gun show when I was ten and I just couldn’t take my eyes off of it. Not the best quality knife, but I was absolutely obsessed with it lol.

I'm only fifteen so I dont have a great job but I'm a huge knife guy so my family is gonna help me get a benchmade 940. Right now I'm carrying a cheap little 3 inch blade . Only because my good one got damaged on a camping trip I also have a lot of fixed blades I do a lot of wood work and out doors survival so I love them.

Benchmade 940 is a waste of money if you can't afford it get something cheaper and use the money on other things
@chrisgonzales16155 жыл бұрын
I agree don’t waste your money

Well all I know is it is a great knife and I could save up the money for one but I think maybe your right any suggestions.

@@cashhenson5198 you're 15 you need a beater knife any cheap 20 or 35 dollar kershaw will do you good and you won't beat yourself up for losing it

I'd say look into a Griptilian. Nice full handle, S30V, all at $110. That should keep you slightly lower cost, but give you a great blade. I started collecting at 14, so I understand. Don't be ashamed to buy a 30 or 50 dollar knife. We all have to start somewhere, and any real knife guy will know and understand that. No matter what, from CRKT to a Chris Reeve knife, if you take care of it and love it and use it, then you are all set.

A $20 Morakniv. I'm no expert or aficionado, but I've owned a few and that one seems like the least bullshit knife you can get.

I'm a recent Mora Stainless convert. I EDC a Mora pro s and a mora Eldris. The reason? Quality knives that do not scream tacticool and are stainless steel so I never have to worry about rust living and working in the PNW where it rains ...alllllllways

My first fixed blade was a Buck pathfinder. It was my paps, he kept it under the drivers seat in his camper van, or on his hip when he went out on the Harley. I've never used it, since he gave it to me it has its own spot in a display case on my bedroom wall. I have 2 neck knives and a machete, but other than that I don't have a real need for fixed blades. Man are they cool though. I want to start a sword collection as well, and also everyone should carry a katana because, well..knives. I missed out on the live show this time, I took the kid to the circus that comes to town once a year, but I do have a civivi purchase coming in the near future. I have a few WE knives in my wishlist as well but the utility companies keep sending bills every month, quite annoying. I have knives to buy you know.

I love my Tops Wolfhawk HP. I flattened the scales into a ramp instead of a 90 degree cliff. Then I had a custom sheath made.

Case x-small hunter for my 10th bday. I was a homeschool kid, so after school I’d hit the woods and that knife was always on my belt. It doesn’t see any carry time these days, but it will when my son’s old enough.

Nice video guys - the Mora Eldris is a good fixed blade setup people that carry a ProTech Half-breed. Short stubby blade with an extendable handle. I kinda like it though!

I spent a good 6 months deciding between the esee 5 and esee 6 for bushcraft and camping, and settled on the 6 because it was a little more versatile (and it’s a giant knife, so who doesn’t like that?) but I would still really love to get my hands on an esee 5.

CRKT Bita. Perfect stealthy EDC. Take the lanyard off and carry it in a back pocket like a comb. More discreet than any folder and more pocket friendly.
