I started out my knife addiction buying cold steel knives worried I would need to bust open a car window, baton wood logs, and start a fire way more often than I have. Now I buy knives based on how well they feel cutting apples and oranges, stripping wires, and they have to be a fidget toy. Otherwise I have my leatherman for most other small things and a truck full of dewalt tools when those aren’t big enough. Much happier

My old man carried a Buck 110 on his belt for decades. Fortunately, we lived in an area where pulling it out at a cash register to clip a coupon didn't raise concerns 👍
@jolness1

I've noticed that knives made with more traditional looking materials like wood and brass, two handed opening knives and carrying it in a belt sheath all make the knife much more "friendly" to most people. Granted I do live in Montana where lots of people carry knives but I think the buck is still a friendly looking knife today because it looks like a "my grandpa carried that" type of knife.

Back in early 2015 I was repairing a bi-level railcar. I was up on the second with a harness on, about to go up top. I swung around to the ladder and my foot slipped. The safety harness strap wrapped around my neck. I managed to get out my CRKT M21-12G and cut the line. It has been my knife of choice ever since. Best knife I have ever owned and I know I can trust it with my life.

My choice would be the Mora Garberg. The Scandi blade design has been around since before the age of the Vikings and we still use it today, because it works. A Mora knife is a jack-of-all-trades. It is not the best at anything, but it can do almost any job in a pinch. The Garberg is a sturdy, fixed blade with full tang so it should have all my bases covered.

Buck 110. For several reasons: 1) In some places, I'm limited to folders for EDC. I'm automatically limited to folders. And, I challenge anyone to find a tougher folder than the 110. It's all brass with wood scales, so the handle and mechanism are virtually indestructible. The point is the weakest point of the knife, which brings me to my next point. 2) I've dealt with Buck's warranty service on several occasions, and it's the best bar none. The only thing I can imagine ever breaking on the 110 is the blade. And, Buck will replace my blade for $10 if it ever does. Any issues with the handle or mechanism are free. So, as long as I don't lose it, I could potentially run the same 110 my entire life and never need to buy another knife.

If I could have only one pocket knife (which is unimaginably cruel), then I would probably go with my old, full-sized, Sebenza. Have had it for years and it's always been great. Plus, the folks at Reeve's knives are super nice and went way out of their way to help me get a nice sharp Christmas present to my son when he was in Iraq.

Thanks for sharing! I very much enjoyed the analogy of the Buck 110... one of my favorites, perhaps most favorite is the one my two sons had custom made for me with the S30V Satin blade, Blue Wood grips with nickle bolster, engraved for my birthday one year. And my favorite fixed blade, don't use it much either, is a custom Buck 119 420HC Chipflint blade, with brass guard/pummel and Iron Wood grips, with brown distressed leather sheath ... razor sharp from the factory and flawless in it's manufacture...BTW - just purchased a Morakniv Garberg Full Tang Fixed Blade Knife with Carbon Steel Blade, 4.3-Inch and I can't wait to get a grip on it... from all I've heard, it's a real pleasure to use and most utilitarian! Great reviews... Please keep us posted!

I’ve been a long time budget collector since I was 13 with my dad. I lost every knife slowly over the 14 years and am now rebuilding my collection with more money and lots of research. I hope to comment on this again in a year or so( or the next WOW 1 knife life revisited?) with a more solid decision. I’m currently carrying the black bugout 20cv with gray g10 scales that is a blade hq exclusive and it has shattered my previous belief on knives. It’s thin as hell, stupid light and yet stronger than all the heavy cheap knives I’ve ever had. Love it, keep it up dudes

I have a lot of knives, but the first one I ever bought for myself (birthday present) was a Zero Tolerance 0350ST. I carried that knife for almost four years and it never let me down. I've beat that knife to hell and back and it's a beast. I recently bought a Black Class Bailout to kind of retire my 0350 and from time to time I still find myself pulling the Bailout out of my pocket and being like damn... should have grabbed my 0350. One knife for the rest of my life? ZT0350ST.

I carried a Buck 110 in a Nite Ize holster along with a pen light, a small curved mosquito clamp, a bite stick, trauma shears, a small lighter, a pen and a tourniquet for 23 years as part of my medical kit. As a paramedic with several missions as a first responder to aircraft incidents and rescue missions a good knife was crucial in almost every scenario. That Buck 110 served that purpose well. While working with EOD on gunnery range clean ups my Buck 110 was a secondary tool to my Kabar. When the Kabar was too large for certain tasks the Buck 110 filled in. Unfortunately, while trying to pry a "souvenir" off an old tank (target) I broke off the tip of the Buck. Heartbroken, I used a file to re-shape a tip but not as pointed as the original. I still use that Buck 110 (55 years later) and it serves as a vital part of my survival kit in my bug out bag. The primary blade is a Gerber Strongarm which has proven itself in spades. As a matter of fact it survived a "tag gauntlet" involving several You Tubers putting it through the ringer...total abuse with intentions of trying to break it. I love it so much I bought two of them, one black and one coyote brown. Depending on what color my backpack is determines which Strongarm I take. If I had to choose between the Gerber Strongarm and the Buck 110, I'd have to go with the Buck 110 which presently resides in a Hyde and Drink leather holster alongside a Leatherman Sidekick.

I have three with the thumb studs and indeed they are an improvement. I would never want a 110 with a clip, I am not from the generation of knife clips, in the pocket or sheath for me. There is a big difference between an office edc and an outdoor edc. My solution is not for everyone but it is all I am comfortable with. Pocket clip knives are backups for me.

Ontario 12" blade machete. Of course, paying extra for the optional nylon sheath since it doesn't come with a sheath. going to be weak on food prep. due to the coating on the blade. But will literally do everything else needed in a survival situation, and do those things well. Outside of a survival situation, Ontario RAT-2. Legal to carry nearly anywhere. Useful blade length at 3 inches, easy to re-sharpen (obviously I don't mean the D2 option). Repositionable carry-clip, excellent thumb-stud openers. Very quick to deploy. Ironically, I'm not really much of an Ontario fan. Even though my Go-to fixed-blade is a RAT-7 in a custom kydex sheath. And the RAT-2 is my overall favorite EDC carry knife.

Curb_Rash_Kid here and much love for the shout-out on the Livestream! Sad to say I missed it live but glad I'm seeing it now. The buck 110 is a fantastic knife, I carry my grandad's in the center console of the truck he passed down to me. It's seen everything, and has taken more abuse than any tool that I've ever seen my Grandad put his hands on. Im serious as a heart attack, only one knife? The 110.

Im a stone mason and I have carried my Leatherman Charge TTI to work for years and its gotten me through all sorts of shituations.. I love that multitool. My current EDC is an Emerson SheepDog folder with 154 cm steel, spearpoint and serrations .. I LOVE the wave feature that deploys the blade as you draw it from the belt line or pocket... its amazing. My survival fixed blade is a "Helle Utvaer" with a 4" drop point, full tang, scandi ground 12C27ss blade with curly birch handle and pommel. Its a thing of beauty.. but its my safe queen. I think I need an FC5 in my life.. what a beastly beauty

I'm all about folders but if it came down to I can only have one forever, it would have to be a fixed blade due I to the fact that I don't believe a single folder would last me the rest of my life. Well, maybe a cold steel would.

Sadly I missed the livestream, but if I could only have one knife it’d probably be the Gold Class Bugout. All the benefits of the Bugout, plus the extra quality and materials to make for a show knife, EDC, heirloom, etc. Picked one up awhile back and it sparks so much joy. Alternatives would be an ACE Biblio or Para 3. Having one of each, I can happily say that any of them would meet all my knife needs and then some.

The guy that said everyone overthinks their knives is 100% correct. There are tools for the job. I understand that emergencies happen, and it’s good to be prepared for anything. However, if you’re walking around with enough stuff on you to survive the apocalypse? You may be over doing it a little. One knife to keep forever would be a knife that retains its edge, tip, is corrosion resistant, and easy to carry. If it meets those few qualities, you should be fine. You don’t need to walk around with 7 knives on you. Honestly a small fixed blade would be the perfect EDC knife because it’s less likely to break, they’re easy to carry, and you can always tie it to a stick and make a spear.

@@jcolterh I hear that a lot but I've had my 940 for over 10 years, it is my most carried knife by far and I play with it all the time. It's probably been opened and closed thousands and thousands of times and I've never had an issue with it. I actually have 15 knives that have Axis locks, the oldest one being close to 20 years old and I've never had a single issue with them.

I have a lot of knives. I mean a lot. Inexpensive ones, expensive ones. All types of steels and blade shapes. Every time I buy a knife, I try it out with the intention of replacing the Recon 1, tanto. And every time, I end up going back to the Recon. Some people dislike the knife because they don't like Lynn Thompson. Some people dislike the knife for whatever reason. I have 6 of these knives in different styles. One of the things I use it for is to cut up very thick cardboard from appliance boxes. These are some of the thickest, strongest boxes you'll find. The Recon slices through them like butter. Some people might say a utility box cutter would be better suited for the job. I use those too. But there are times when my Recon will do a much better job. I keep my knives very very sharp so that helps. 🤙🏾

Just started following the show and I love it. If I had to pick one knife from my collection to carry exclusively (the horror!) it would probably be my Strider SNG with micarta scales. It’s got a semi-beefy CPM20CV blade, but it stays light because of the micarta front scale paired with a titanium back. It’s super grippy and easy to use.
