ABOUT B12. I have been B12 deficient since birth (pernicious anemia, lack of intrinsic factor) I have to get monthly shots. My whole life. So if someone says "No matter what I can't get my B12" then maybe get more blood tests and check if you can even absorb B12.

Thank you Sara Anne. My mom also has to take B12 injections because she can't absorb it from pills. I'm disappointed that Mic. the Vegan would suggest that perhaps Blaire is being intentionally misleading rather than consider that there may be some contributing factor beyond his limited knowledge, despite how knowledgeable he is about the topic. Obviously that perhaps Blaire stopped absorbing B-12 didn't cross his mind while making the video, unless he intentionally didn't mention, but I honestly don't think that's the case. Disappointing nonetheless.

MidEast American Well she does say that eating meat corrected the problem. If she really had B12 absorption problems, she wouldn’t have made that claim. Mic is rightly pointing out that if you can’t get enough from targeted supplements (which come in much higher doses) you surely can’t get enough simply from eating meat (as she claims to have done). I’m sure if she said she was still B12 deficient even now, he would have suggested that she may need shots.

Sara Anne ... Beef liver from grass fed cows three times a week will counter that . It is really the only truly absorbable and bioavailable form . The body doesn't like other forms of cobalamin(B12). You'll feel better trust me . Those shots have adjuncts in them and are synthetic . You need real B12 , again 3 ounces 3 times a week . Most vegans feel great for about 3 to 10 years and then hit a wall and feel horrible until they eat some organic eggs and some beef liver

My doctor did a thyroid test because I was tired and it was a vitamin D deficiency, my thyroid was fine, but it was more due to living in Maine and a lack of sun. I have been vegan for 24 years (I'm 42) and have had 3 healthy babies and have not had any vitamin deficiencies except the D. I occasionally take a sublingual b12 if I have not had much fortified food or nutritional yeast. A long term vegan diet is totally healthy. Thanks for dispelling myths:) Have a great day!

It isn't so much that they are 'bad'... Some people have autoimmune issues where the body keeps trying to push them out of the body, others may have toxicity issues- overload, and implants may be the straw that overwhelms the liver. Yes there are old implants or leaking, etc, but that is usually more rare. It is what each individual body does with a foreign object in the body. If anyone has an autoimmune issue- asthma, allergies, eczema, hashimotos, MS etc, I wouldn't recommend them.

Van Allen For them it is necessary. For modern humans it is not. We have lots of other food options, year round. And unlike obligate carnivores, there is nothing we need from meat that we cannot get from plants. This has been studied and proven extensively. In fact, humans tend to be healthier the fewer animal products we eat. We eat meat for pleasure and convenience. It IS unethical to place taste and convenience over the life of another sentient being. It’s also disingenuous to say that because other animals do it it must be ethically okay. Other animals also sometimes rape, commit infanticide, and do all sorts of things we would not consider okay. With greater moral reasoning comes greater responsibility to consider the wellbeing of others. It doesn’t hurt my feelings if you eat meat. It does hurt animals though, most of whom spend their lives confined and abused, all of which are ultimately slaughtered. Can you really justify that with half an hour of taste pleasure? Does that really align with your own sense of ethics?

It is so frustrating to me every time I hear someone say vegans don't get enough B12 when there is an incredibly high number of omnivores with severe deficiencies. I work in the medical field and there are a crazy amount of people coming in for B12 shots, as well as a very large number of people with vitamin D deficiencies. I had very low vitamin D pre-vegan so clearly veganism isn't the issue.

We also don't know how her other drugs are interacting with supplements, she could have always done vitamin injections. When we hear people feel better after eating meat it has to do with a poor vegan diet every time so far. Trading $2 worth of B12 for all the higher risks of chronic diseases, which are increased with hormone therapy seems like a poor trade off. Highly recommend seeing a dietician for anyone else in this position. Average vegan last 7 years, so looking at what keeps long term vegans vegan is something we need to do more research on. The 20 year + vegan crew is few and far between! Would like to hear from more of them!

Most people claiming better health immediately after eating animal products are experiencing placebo effect, their diet before wasn't even necessarily deficient. According to the scientific literature supplements are the best way to compensate for any deficiency, especially the meat most people eat doesn't reliably contain vitamins and minerals unless they are eating organ meats, even then something like B12 is not well absorbed and so taking megadoses is the best way to assure absorption.

In the live stream she mentions that she is just “burnt out”, and I don’t think she is talking about being vegan. She is dating a guy who’s family are very conservative Christians, and I think she is trying to get them to accept her. It’s hard enough to be vegan around ignorant people, let alone be vegan and transgender around ignorant people. I think she feels pressured to assimilate. I also never said one is superior to another but i could argue with you that males are superior on certain tasks while being inferior in other tasks, but that's a whole other subject. And since eating female hormones especially from a different animal than us it's going to affect you without a doubt, i was telling you to stop eating them because they are transforming you into a female, which is obvious from the posts that you've made that are emotional and offensive ( irrational ) towards 'vegans', i wonder why?

Here's a fun scientific fact! There are 2 types of vitamins, fat soluble and water soluble. B12 is water soluble , so you don't have to worry about whether your stomach is full or empty when you take it. You also don't have to be concerned about whether or not you are taking too much, because like he said you excrete the excess amount through your urine. Vitamin D, on the other hand, is fat soluble . This means that you can overdose on it because it doesn't dissolve in water. This also means that since it is fat soluble, it cannot be absorbed unless it is consumed with something that contains fat. A good example of this is taking a vitamin D pill with a spoonful of almond butter. Almond butter contains fat. Without that fat, the person would never be able to actually absorb the vitamin D in the pill. This actually also applies to when you consume vitamin D in your food. A good idea would be to eat a salad of spinach and cucumbers and / or mushrooms, with a fatty dressing like oil and vinegar, or any other plant based oily dressing. The spinach is very rich in calcium, which can only be absorbed with vitamin D. There is vitamin D in cucumbers and mushrooms that can only be absorbed with the fat in the dressing. It is possible that Miss Blaire was actually consuming the supplements as directed, but merely not taking the vitamin D with food. I would venture to say that she actually was taking the supplements as directed, but still had symptoms and probably still low blood levels of the vitamin D because she was not eating fatty foods when she took the pills.

i'm trans myself and I took my pills sublingually to avoid the first pass effect and so the strain on my liver. later I switched to cream, which is just more convenient than dissolving a pill under your tongue twice daily. especially when you are post op and don't have to take anti androgens there is absolutely no strain on the liver. afterwards its neglectable, as long as your young and not on other meds with liver side effects or suffering a chronic illness. veganism is also very helpfull for us transwomen, as the phytoestrogens and progesterones have a slight balancing effect on our endocrine system. while especially diary products and meat's hormones disturb it in a rather androgenic way. also its ironically better for the liver 😉

If a person is vegan and doesn't want to be the center of attention, it's very easy to go under the radar when going out with friends. Every restaurant has a vegan option. Sorry bro. Not that simple. :( It's pretty hard, but I don't hide my veganism with my 'friends'. When out with associates who I'd prefer not to know about veganism, I usually say I have a dairy/egg/ fish- crustacean allergy, and usually say I prefer tofu to meat. BUT as horrible as it is, most of the time French fries aren't vegan. It's stupid - I mean it's just like deep fried and heavily salted sliced potatoes... but a lot of the time animal fats are used. So that sucks. Even if fries were vegan, I wouldn't order them. Fries are terrible for you, I'm not ordering an appetizer\side that is slowly killing me just so I can be normal. I think every restaurant can throw lettuce in a bowl though, so I could eat that and then have a proper meal at home. A+ effort tho

Plenty of places offer veggie burgers, order them without cheese or mayo. Also, most fast food places can't afford animal fats as they're pricey compared to the usual vegetable options. Well said!! I also thought her reasons for quitting were just not rational, and it thus made sense that she quit due to psychological/emotional difficulties vs physical ones. I also wondered if it wasn't just a political thing that made her want to quit, but maybe also the fact that she has worked so hard to "fit in" (as a transwoman) that maybe that mentality of not wanting to stand out was bleeding over to her veganism.

It's not really about her choice, it's more about the fake excuses she tries to find. It's the hypocrisy that she use in order to deny animal's choice to live. Condemning them to death and hiding behind ridiculousness such as b12 and vitamin D pills are causing liver damages. Which is another lie that vegans are going to have to deal with. Kind of like the protein thing.

Curtis Giumelli Then you're missing all the jerks calling HER a "man in a dress" or refusing to use the correct pronoun. Which is disrespectful, to say the least. Addressing the toll transitioning would take on her body is valid. Using "he" or correcting others with "*he/him" or saying all the other horrible things is not.
@Ben-fr8gi
@Ben-fr8gi 6 жыл бұрын
+Curtis Giumelli There are lots of unexplored possible causes for why she felt ill. My impression from her videos is that she felt ill and just followed the idea veganism was the cause. I don't agree with this, there are plenty of healthy vegans, so it appears it can be done. Ultimately though, the amount of effort that goes in to doing something that takes some ongoing effort is a mixture of want to do it and physical and emotional energy. I actually don't know the balance of the two that led to her choice. I'm not going to stress over details I don't know, but I am glad the dubious claims about veganism and supplements are being critically looked at, because I think these are the real issues as they can mislead people. Pulling in politics as many comments have is irrelevant, and as for being transgender, it's possible this has had some health effects, but it's unknown and focusing on it too much could become deflective rather than useful.

You can sit and analyze Blair all day long. Some people have issues that others don’t have. This was her personal journey and personal decision. My daughter has Crohn’s disease, and due to the scarring in her intestines, has trouble absorbing vitamins in the food she eats. She also has Sjögren’s disease, which adds another set of dietary needs. And some perfectly healthy things, like soy, make her sick. My bottom line is, it’s important to educate yourself about what nutritional needs YOU have, and what foods and supplements will provide those needs. And check with your doctor periodically, to make sure you are ok. Like my daughter has experienced, you might not be ABSORBING the nutrition like you should. And some medications or combinations of supplements can interfere with absorption of vitamins. Maybe your particular body can be fine with a 99% vegan diet but you need to have fish, because of age or heart condition, etc. Just be wise about your health and be kind to everyone, we are not all the same. That’s the most important thing, no matter what Blair or anyone says.

I think it's so easy to see that no matter how we eat we need to be responsible for our health personally. If you don't feel right you need to work with a nutritionist and get yourself balanced no matter what you are eating. Here I am vegan and 100x more balanced than EVER before.... because I actually give a damn about my health now not just what's easiest.

Kayla Phillips Thing is that most of their people get meat dairy and eggs from big Agra, there aren't any studies showing people that eat organic grass fed beef and who drink non pasteurised milk, a vegan diet is gonna be better than a Babylonian big pharma diet, however we don't actually know if organic and raw milk is beneficial, I'm a vegan also, I just find it mad how we automatically assume shitty animal products straight away as opposed to butchers cuts of meats for example.

She doesn’t believe in euthanasia which most liberals would think is ok to do to animals. She seems to care about all life forms no matter how fragile. I think that helped her quickly grasp the horrors of farming and she is now reducing meat. My other friends don’t care and aren’t interested. They definitely respect my decision but don’t want to dig into why I went vegan. Interesting responses in my opinion. Conservatives may be more likely to go vegan. There are some vitamins/minerals that your body can get too much such of such as calcium and vitamin D. But you'd have to digest large amounts to have to worry. A multivitamine and multimineral will not harm you.

I'm vegetarian and easing in to veganism. While I understand the passion towards living a cruelty-free life, etc we should understand it's not feasable for everyone. We should agree to disagree and move on here. Blaire didn't do anything wrong here, she was just talking about her experiences and ten years of veganism is a good effort compared to those who refuse to try it at all. I don't think people should react negatively to her. She has her reasons. As a community of vegetarians and vegans we shouldn't be judgemental and instead focus on other things in order to make change rather than what other people do.

Faboi Male chicken still get killed in most "cruelty free" farms after being alive for only a few minutes. Even if you have your own chicken and breed them, you will eventually have to kill the roosters even if you seperate them from the hens. If I remember correctly they start to fight each other when they are between 5 and 9 month old. It's also hard selling a rooster to someone who will not make a meal out of him. That's what is not acceptable from a vegan standpoint about consuming eggs.

Margaret Bentley Hi Margaret! Yup! Great to hear from another 'aged to perfection' veghead. 😁 Went veggie in my senior year of high school. Couldn't (never ever) eat flesh again! I equate it to cannibalism, we're all 'animals'. I'm (happy, but) concerned with so many going vegan today that it won't last. How many are doing it cuz its in fashion or cuz friends are into it, or maybe, they'll get bored with it and quit. Of course, any that do stay vegan, all the better. But, I nearly cringe when someone says to me, "I used to be vegetarian". June

Former vegan, did all the same stuff, spent jack money. I had health issues, not the same has hers, besides constantly being tired. I went back to being vegetarian instead and barely eat meats like steaks, beef, chicken, etc. And I take a multivitamin now instead of taking 5-6 pills a day. But overall I try to avoid animal products. I’m still a healthy person according to my homeopathic doctor and regular doctor despite me eating eat some animal products. I wasn’t when I was vegan. Despite being active working out more then 4 times a week 2 hours at a time, the vegan diet was taking a personal toll on me, health wise and both doctors saw it too. I didn’t really have deficiencies except vitamin d but pretty much everyone in Michigan is deficient of it

When a non-vegan says their diet isn't working, vegans exclaim "go vegan!" When a vegan says their diet isn't working, vegans exclaim "you're not doing it right!" meanwhile, non-vegans largely don't care what you eat. Time and time again, I see vids like this where vegans essentially play damage control and never, ever will just come to the realization that not all diets work the same for everyone, including a vegan diet. In the world of veganism, a vegan diet can do no wrong and is not flawed. If you are having trouble with the diet, then it is your fault and you should just try harder and never, ever quit being vegan to try a diet that may fit your lifestyle, or body better. If so much effort apparently needs to be put into a diet for it to work as intended or at least to meet the needs of the individual, couldn't that in itself be seen as a flaw of the diet? Vegans are by far the most culty, holier-than-thou group of people when it comes to something as benign as diet, largely because it is more than a diet, it is an ideology - like a religion without a traditional god. I say "traditional," because nature/the environment is treated as their god. Vegans are often preachy and overbearing with their views and if people are going to ignore the ones that knock on their door trying to convert them to their church, they are going to do the same for vegans, because they come off as the same and this is why vegans are largely mocked and dismissed. If you want veganism to be taken more seriously and accepted more in society, just follow these 3 simple words - leave. people. alone. Let them eat what they want and let them live their lives how they want. Accept that not everybody wants to be vegan and if you want to raise awareness, do so in a benign, peaceful manner, instead of the "brute force" tactics I often see, essentially trying to force people into seeing things their way, by using emotion as leverage and even going as far as making others look/feel stupid for not being vegan. Leave it up to the individual instead of trying to change their mind(s) for them. Give them literature and educate them on the subject and if they are interested, they will pursue it on their own and if they are not interested, that is also okay, since being vegan isn't for everyone - remember, it's not just changing their diet, it's changing their entire lifestyle and perspective on certain aspects on society. Stop treating it like a contest where veganism needs to be #1 with no alternatives. Instead of putting all your eggs in one basket towards veganism, perhaps spread your efforts and advocate for things like more regulations in the meat industry, the importance of buying locally and educating people to try and lower the demand for meat. Try to make a non-vegan diet a more humane, sustainable, reasonable alternative, instead of this "all or nothing" approach with veganism.

Vegans whine and complain about people being critical of their life style choice but Vegans are the FIRST to pick apart someone elses choices. Who cares why she decided to stop being vegan, how does it effect you in the least? She stated that she doesn't want to put a bad name on other Vegans or convince anyone else that Veganism is bad. It's just something in her own personal life that didn't work out. For some people Veganism works, for some it's even a miracle cure, but please, go ahead and demonize those who decide it's not for them. At least she tried, at least she gave it a shot. It's not your business to pass judgment on her choices, if you where secure in yourself and your choices you wouldn't feel the need to complain about someones dietary choices. And Y'all wonder why people don't like Vegans. sheeeeesh.

"Who cares why she stopped being vegan, how does it affect you in the least?" 1. Over 56 BILLION animals are slaughtered annually by the meat industry so while that particular issue might not directly apply to me, it does apply to those innocent beings who did nothing to harm anyone and never asked to be murdered. 2. Animal agriculture is one of the leading causes of Amazonian deforestation and green house gas emissions. So, YES, it does affect me. It affects the planet the I live on, my generation, and the future generations that are to come. 3. Her saying that her veganism lead to her having deficiencies affects how others view veganism. It'll probably guide them away from veganism thinking it's unhealthy, and again, it'll lead to the mass slaughter of innocent, seintent beings.

I don't want to sound condescending, but the mind is a powerful tool. Nocebo and placebo effect can be extremely powerful. I've been terrified of pain all my life. I never want to push a human melon out of my body and I've always been worried about getting kidney stones, because apparently those f*ckers can hurt even more than pushing a baby out (and it's not something I have control over). So one day I felt a tiny cramp while peeing, I thought I suddenly had a kidney stone and I got SO anxious I was trembling all over and almost fainted. What was it? NOTHING. My fear almost caused me to faint, yet I was perfectly healthy. I'm pretty sure visualizing all your cells vibrating and being cured of a deficiency can have a similar but positive effect on the psyche...

Yes, nocebo is a thing. I've had it, too. My neurologist looked at my last MRI images with me. They showed some prolapsed discs in my upper spine. And soon enough, my hands and feet started tingling. Up to the point where I had to be hospitalised to get i.v. steroids over five days. People can even die from the nocebo effect! There has been a death by freezing in a freezer where the cooling was switched off, the temperature was around 5 degrees Celsius. That should make for a very uncomfortable night, but still, it's survivable as countless homeless people prove. That person believed he was going to freeze to death, though, and he did.

I 10000% had the same thoughts when I watched Blair's video. I felt the only part that was authentic was the ending, where she explains how she doesn't like being the center of attention. I felt like her whole body language changed and became more confident/self-assured when she made that point, as opposed to her prior points about having health problems, etc. It's so obvious that she quit for social reasons, and any smart vegan can see that. Being the center of attention does suck and it's annoying to have people comment on my personal eating habits BUT I would NEVER do something I'm so personally against just to fit in. Sucks, I used to think Blair was a really honest and cool person, despite some of her conservative views. But this I can't get behind. It's just lame. I wouldn't be so annoyed with her if she had just cut out the part about having health problems and had just been honest about quitting for social reasons, because spreading misinformation about "health problems" caused by veganism is ignorant and harmful to the movement.
