Best Album of 2022. Maybe it is because I grew up in the 80s. Maybe it is Jim perfectly replicating an 80s radio station and dropping wisdom as only he can. Maybe it is the rawness of “Tale by Quincy”. Maybe it is those amazing lyrics, vocals and musicality. Actually you know what it is? It is the whole thing. This is what an album should be. So nice to have an album dropped that is meant to be listened to as a full album in this day and age of singles. This is true art. Loved the review Blake!! So excited to see him live in August.

I enjoyed Blakes's perception on the album and would like to share some of mine; 1) Gasoline+ Sacrifice- Lower tones to contrast the chorus just like how dance music has build ups and beat drops (more like eric prydz/progressive house in this case) and also stylized like a story teller and makes listener imagine an old/mature character (one portrayed on his album) speaking in gasoline but like a "bad ass super hero/someone of power introducing themselves with a deeper voice." or in case, in his city he is a "young god." 2) How do you love me contains chords in the beat drop sounding like what a fool believes by the doobie brothers. 3)Take My Breathe- The breathe before transition was to mimic "Taking someone's breath" -The bass in the song kinda reminds me of a bit of daft punk- da funk (who he's worked with before) -Call and response is beneficial to have as a breather when performing the song live because he will most likey have backing tracks during concert but like you said for people to sing along aswell or as if the song was sung by "The Weeknd ft. The Weeknd." -The melody/cadence does remind me of the trance song Medina- You & I 4) Out of time is really similar to silk sonic smoking out the window but for some reason when the beat drops I imagine Saved By The Bell/80s high school sweet heart vibe or if you were having some sort of dream. -Elongated notes in Out Of Time mimics himself almost crying/reflecting in ones past but gives emphases and emotion into those words and imagination to the listener of the pain and suffering. 5) Here we go again remind me of a Beach Boy's harmony most notably their song "Forever"/80s sitcom Opening Song which coincidently is the same song being covered in the Full House sitcom by John Stamos. Also note that I believe one of the beach boys members has credits to the song and contributed in studio. (Also has a clapping track in the song associated with a tv sitcom) -Side note- The Weeknd does not write his lyrics first. He is known to do reference tracks by just humming or singing gibberish then fills in the gibberish with words. However, he has unreleased music sometimes that brings his lyrics over onto a new beat that makes it onto the album which some fans consider as his "Demo" -You are absolutely right with The Weeknd being the dark silk. Bruno had MJ as a major influence where as The Weeknd has not only MJ, but Prince and R.Kelly and it shows. We like to think of Abel & Bruno Mars the offspring of MJ, One stayed true to pop completely, where as the other has more of a much more darker approach to his music. The Weeknd is Michael Jackson as if who grew up, and experimented with drugs and alcohol. 6) I thought Best friends sounded like "Im So Fancy" as well. I think it is one of those tracks that don't really fit with the theme of the album BUT it moves us away from the pop sound to give the other listeners a modern upbeat sound. "Best Friend" had potential with the beat and I feel like the lyrics are a bit lacking, same with "Is there Someone Else." A little too simple and bland for me. With the right lyrics, it could have been similar to this album's often. 7) Is There Someone Else- He keeps his voice low because the vocals in the beat are high pitched and a focal point of the song and feel as if he did not want to clash with it as that is already a hook in itself. Perhaps he sings that high pitch hook live with lyrics in a live acoustic version? The high pitched hook does sound like a reference track verse where he sings his gibberish to improvise. Vocals does sound like it was sampled from Monsta Boy- Sorry (I Didn't Know) 8) Starry Night was dope and gave us a whole prospective in the steps on how Abel starts this interaction with this girl and how it ends. He really puts the emotion into the words and his voice with the heavenly like beat, it makes the listener image his beginning and down fall a.k.a death in this story. 9) Every Angel is terrifying was pretty fun and dope to listen to. It brings out Abel's creative theatrical side as he enjoys acting and its crazy that he makes the infomercial segment still catchy and sound great. 10) Don't Break My Heart sounds like an old man's pop song and just occurred to me that it reminds me of Abel's version of "an 80s disco like Acey breaky Heart" LOL but he does it well and it wouldn't sound far off since the titles are quite similar, how he makes all those lines rhyme and pop, emphasizing them and making it sound great in the ears. 11) I Heard You're Married is produced by Calvin Harris and you can tell by the bass lines and riffs and this track gives me the exact vibes as "A Lonely Night" from his album Starboy. This beat goes hard though. 12) Less Than Zero sounds like it was made in the same sessions as Save Your Tears but even though the lyrics are quite sad, the chorus gives off a feel good/anthem/arena ballad with lighters vibe with the back vocals and synths.

The Weeknd's songs always feel so futuristic to me, it totally transports me to another world. But THIS album made me feel like I was on a futuristic planet (almost like that planet, Lamentis, in the Loki series) surrounded by almost metal looking buildings or just very abstract houses and flying cars and trains passing through the air. I just imagine being stuck in traffic on this planet and switching to Dawn FM radio and then listening to this whole album until you reach home.

Pop music has always been my calling and I prefer to hear a studio version of a song over a live performance any day. With today's technology, the things people can do with production only continues to amaze and please my ears. I love artists like Charli XCX, where her vocals get so processed, manipulated and distorted to where it sometimes sounds like a synth itself and how she can bring a total different sound and feeling to a song that you just couldn't ever bring to life with live instruments, Her kinda music only exists within the digital world and it's not just "slap autotune onto the vocals because she can't sing" there's deliberate personal choices being made to elevate her sound to create the art she wants and the same is here with the Weeknd with the amazing choices they've decided on throughout the tracks. to manipulate his vocals and it makes it sound so cinematic and again you just can't get that experience with live music and I personally don't think it cheapens music like this, it only enhances it and brings it to a new level and listening experience.

Thank you!! Totally agree, im so sick of people talking about how music was so much better before because people actually played instruments. Who cares the vision and end result is what matters!!!

Out Of Time samples 'Midnight Pretenders' by Tomoko Aran, her songs are such vibes too!! And I love what Abel did to this one
@Dara-po3dd2 жыл бұрын
@Blake McLain fun fact: out of time used a japanese sample called midnight pretenders by tomoko aran. i guess that's why it vibey due to its 80s city pop nature. what an artist

I’ve heard a lot of people are thinking the concept of this album is purgatory and The Weeknd is in purgatory thinking/singing about regrets and the life he lived and coming to terms with it and moving on and as the tracks go on they start to get a little lighter and the songs seeming so long is becuz purgatory is supposed to seem never ending till you can let go of you past

This album is such a gem. It's a whole journey, it's taken 80's elements and transformed them into something modern yet nostalgic. Perfect to listen to in the car at night. I love that little synth run in How Do I Make You Love Me, the massive build up of tension in the longer version of Take My Breath (also, that song has massive Daft Punk and MJ inspired vibes). The producer for this album was involved in the early 2010's vaporwave movement and I think that experience with transforming nostalgic elements into something that sounds new really shines through. Also, Jim Carrey as the slightly nefarious radio announcer was an amazing choice, his performance truly ties everything together! Had to heartily laugh at your realization with your cat on your shoulder!

Sacrifice is Thriller, HDIMYLM is Wanna' Be Startin' Somethin' and Out of Time it's a mix between Human Nature and The Lady in My Life. I'm so here for these vibes. He brought everything i love from 80's music to make it current and new. I'm so here for it.

Very genuine reaction, i appreciated your comments. I saw The Weeknd live and the long instrumental part in Take My Breath is exalctly meant to be a dance part for the live show.

Best of luck on the road to 500k! You definitely deserve it! Your reaction has actually helped me as an engineer identifying some techniques used and ideas behind the stylistic choices. Great stuff. Edit: Just got to your comment about his writing process and I will comment that I was lucky enough to be in a studio earlier on in his career and caught when he was going through some instrumentals and production in a session. He had a mic set up in the control room and it seemed like on certain tracks that he liked he would run it back and hum/harmonize to the track and throw in what I assume were prewritten or previously thought of lyrics/phrases or things that stuck with him and if it worked I’m assuming he fleshed it out from there. Unfortunately I was on my way out after a long session and didn’t get to stay to see what or if anything came of it. I know that a lot of artists work this way now but just thought that it was interesting that you nailed that.

1:11:39 and 1:13:43 when you realize it’s Jim Carrey are my favorite moments 😁 I actually recognized him right away and then I found out that they are neighbors. Abel said he is a big fan of Jim and was like 4 years old when he saw the Mask with him. Great reaction by the way, this album is more of a grower for sure. It took me few listens to truly appreciate it. I do believe that Abel is one of the best artists of our generation. He creates something outstanding every single time with his amazing voice, dark lyrics and visuals.

1:14:06 "So Jim was the DJ the entire time" No, that was OPN (Oneothrix Point Never). He produced most of the album

He meant the DJ as in the one who is "controlling" the music because this album is meant to be like a radio.

less than zero is my favorite abel song and hate me if you want. it's got every vibe you want in this song. the hype vibe that gets your blood running as well as an 80s vibe and a sad and dark vibe to it. I love the chorus with all my soul, I keep playing this over and over unlike any other weeknd song except maybe the hills. this is my favorite song right now that Abel's ever written, his next album has to top it.
