Showreel - Star Wars: Battlefront 2 Trailer Music / Blakus

Over the last year, I have had the privilege of working closely with EA/Dice to create custom music for over 10 trailers associated with EA Star Wars products. The opportunity to put my own spin on Williams' masterful themes to these beautiful visuals is an amazing experience. This video showcases a few of these trailers. - More to come!

I would love to! But unfortunately EA holds the rights to all the music I have created for EA Star Wars campaigns. It is possible they might pop up in the future in other Star Wars related products, but it is unlikely that the music will ever be released on its own!

You did a phenomenal job. These were some of the best game trailers in recent years, I didn't know you composed the music. If you have time, what's your background in music? How did you learn orchestration and mixing?

Thanks Nick! I've played instruments (cello/piano) from an early age and had the opportunity to play in many orchestras when I was younger. I started teaching myself composition/orchestration/mixing on the side in 2011. I learned orchestration purely from analysing manuscript scores of composers that I love, and then recreating the music with samples. Mixing is something I'm pretty obsessed with too, but still have a long way to go. My journey with that has pretty much been 'failing forward', trying to train my ears, matching the sounds of recordings I love etc.

When i first heard this trailers i was blown away with music. It is so big and clean and works great with sound design. Awesome work.! How much time did it take to compose for those trailers?

Blake, this is on another level !!! I would love to see and hear this in the cinemas when they release the next star wars movie!! would blow peoples heads off. Actually I was so amazed I had to crack battlefront II out and play it. I was actually wondering where you had gone for the last 9 months but now its clear and although I have missed your videos it was worth the wait!

Question: Do you make the music first then they make the trailer or do they make the trailer and you do the music?

The music and the trailer are created simultaneously. I work closely with the editors and we exchange files and discuss ideas regularly throughout the process. It's the most fun way to work :)

There's a decent sized team that works on each one. Quite a lot of planning/effort goes into it all! With all of these ones I spoke directly to the director/editor, which is my favourite way to work, but often communication is through the producer. The DICE/EA media teams I've worked with are up there with the best at what they do imo. So much fun to work with :)

Haha no problem. I think usually there's one main editor for a project, but they are usually bouncing ideas off the team and getting constant feedback etc. So it's really a team effort. For these game trailers, there's also the obvious task of capturing all the cinematics/gameplay etc as well.

If you were approached to do an entire soundtrack for a film would you decline the offer? Your music is some of the most amazing I've ever heard. The sheer power behind it just give me goosebumps every single time. Also did you do the soundtrack to the Geonosis DLC trailer too. I'd say that's my favourite other than the Rise Of Skywalker Final Trailer.

What would we need to do to convince EA that there is money to be made in releasing and selling your tracks? Genius like this deserves to be listened to without the sound effects to just enjoy your brilliant use of dynamics. It is a huge shame that they want to hold onto them as industry releases only. Though I understand that is standard practice with most custom composed trailer music for the industry but still.

Thanks for the kind words! To EA’s credit they have actually pursued releasing this quite seriously. Unfortunately, licensing issues further up the chain have made it a near impossibility though. Oh well!

Update on this! EA just let me know that they’re seriously looking into releasing all music I’ve written for their campaigns because of the huge number of requests. A lot of it hinges on Lucasfilm approval, so no promises!
