Excellent analysis! Murnau had studied/worked with Max Rhinehart so the theater was in his blood. A huge admirer of this film was John Ford (also directing at Fox at the time.) Ford's own films took a giant technical leap after he saw Sunrise.

Hey gents! I'm a big fan. I choose "Miami Connection" for your 50th show. The reason being-- it looks amazingly hilarious with solid Kung fun rock action. But most of all because my friend Tommy and I have not seen it, because Tommy, who got me into Welcome to the Basement, made me vow not to watch it until he was able to throw a party in its honor. Well it's been almost a year now and he's failed to throw a Miami Connection party, so what better way to get his lazy bum in gear than to have you guys watch it and inspire him!? Thanks and continue being awesome.

I want you guys to see and talk about Tsotsi. It's a south african film with non professional actors but with some of the best acting i've seen in a long time. The main character is able to portray so much of his feeling just through his eyes, even as his character develops throughout the story. Very touching and entertaining movie. it also won the 2006 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in 2006. Watch Tsotsi.

When you discussed appreciating old movie techniques I feel the same way about appreciating other old forms of production in all manors. When I went to Boston I looked at the old brick building and imagined the bricklayers and how every single brick had to be placed one by one.

As a fan of Film, I love Kuasawa. I think that Kuraswa's dreams would be amazing for your show because it captures the different facets of the human imagination. It tackles pressing environmental issues, moral dilemmas and so much more, all with out a clear cut plot but rather loosely connected scenes. in addition it is beautiful as only kurasawa films are.

Craig, I am so glad you mentioned The Winter's Tale, which is a very interesting text to compare to this film (Shakespeare's "romances" or "problem plays" like TWT and The Tempest and Cymbeline all share that interesting texture of beginning with a tragedy construct, drifting into comedy, and then returning to the tragedy but concluding happily -- without a tragic resolution). I was also thinking of the City in Sunrise as a filmic Vanity Fair, the town in Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress which is very deceptive as it looks great, an ecstatic, nonstop party like Gatsby's mansion, but beneath the shiny surface it is empty. It has a shiny seductiveness that looks pretty but is soul-destroying as it doesn't deliver anything real or "true." Murnau was such a genius, and I love the way that the depiction of the City in Sunrise focuses on surfaces -- the beauty parlor, the camera and the photograph (and our couple doesn't "pose" as they are "true"), and the carnival/amusement park -- mirrors and games. Disguises vs the true self, etc.

I've already mentioned it on a previous video by Kinji Fukasakus Battle Royale. One of the first foreign films I ever watched as a teenager and the entire film blew me away. Story, acting, unnecessary brutality and the fact that I was the same age as portrayed by the kids in the film. One of the best films I have ever watched and should definitely be considered for your show.

You should watch Yojimbo by Akira Kurosawa. More often found by American audiences because of its relationship to A Fistful of Dollars, this movie is an interesting look into Japanese culture and a lot of fun to boot. Of course, the story won't surprise you, but the value of measuring cultural adaptation to storytelling is worth it in my opinion.

Weird suggestion for the 50th show movie - Taarka. Made in 2008, it is the first EVER movie made it its language, Seto. Seto is the language of a group of very isolated islands on the Estonian coast, and they have a tradition of ritual singing and Taarka is about one of their great singers, who was also despised for being a single mother and homeless. It also stars my girlfriend's sister in the lead role!

When I was a kid, I watched the sci-fi movie "Enemy Mine." It made a big impact on me. For the past several years, I've been too scared to rematch it, afraid that this big part of my childhood will seem stupid (like watching an old episode of Power Rangers today). I suggest the movie Upstream Color by the amazing Shane Carruth, director of Primer. It is one of the most original films I have ever seen. I do find it hard to describe the plot without missing an important layer and selling the film short. It is a story about two broken people, a thief, a "collector" and a worm....and you can watch it right here on KZbin even. I think the film deserves a much wider audience and you two seem to be two film lovers who would appreciate the beauty of this film and would look back proudly knowing you exposed your legion of fans to a film that is unlike anything else they have seen......and, if through some miscarriage of all that is holy and good, you do not select ot for episode 50, could you please at least address both it and Primer in the "Scene It" section. As always, thanks for keeping us entertained and keep up the great job you do with all your videos.

Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels! My favorite film, I've watched it many times out of pure love for a fantastic story of thievery, accidents, tomfoolery, and British accents! Of course the possibility exists you have "Seen It" so I'll stick to the genre and recommend: Layer Cake, Sexy Beast, 44 Inch Chest, The Long Good Friday, I'll Sleep when I'm Dead, Gangster no.1, Get Carter (1971), Croupier, and/or RockNRolla. All of these I have seen, and have great love and appreciation for them. Which oddly looks similar to my love and appreciation for you guys and your show. Cheers. PS. Guy Ritchie is also working on The Man from U.N.C.L.E. film! We can expect some Cold War action at its release in early 2015! Much excitement!

I posted this on the last video but I really think you guys would enjoy watching Bunraku. It's got a whole lot of America's Caveman and while the dialogue isn't superb the visuals and really astonishing and almost the entire movie is shot on sound stages, which is a nice shift from more recent action movies. It has a lot of heart and is all around a fun adventure that I would recommend to anyone any day of the week. Plenty of action, pretty colors, and narration by my favorite vocalist, Mike Patton of Faith No More and Mr. Bungle fame.

Here's my recommendation: If Matt hasn't seen the 1979 Hal Ashby film "Being There" you guys should watch it for the next episode. Starring Peter Sellers, this movie focuses on a man who was raised on television. I'm recommending this because it was one of the most challenging movies I've seen. It took a second viewing (and a reading of the novel) to really understand it. It's well written, well acted, funny at times, and poignant. It is a necessary addition to anyone's film lexicon. Hope you guys check it out.

You guys should watch Last American Virgin. It is a really underrated early 80s classic. Since you were talking about movies with a tonal shift, Last American Virgin definitely fits the bill. It starts off as a typical 80s teen sex comedy, and then takes a dramatic turn in the third act and becomes really heartbreaking.

Again, I would recommend Phantom of the paradise (1974) The first movie directed by Brian DePalma, it stars William Finley as protagonist Winslow Leach and Paul Williams as the detestable record mogul Swan. Both of my suggestions play on the theme of losing one's sanity, which after watching many of the movies you have seen on this show you might feel like you are at times. First is 1981's Possession with Sam Neill and Isabelle Adjani, about a couple going through a rocky divorce in cold-war Berlin.
