the line @ 9:58 was sampled in RENT (the musical from back in the 90s) and I had no idea it was a Car Wash reference! I still love it in context of both, the 20 year nostalgia jump is real for every generation.
@vsilverisisv5 жыл бұрын
PixieLovesItAll【Danielle ❤】 it’s cool to see where it comes from but I honestly think it has more power in RENT than it does here, sort of like some of the callbacks that Lin Manuel Miranda put in Hamilton. Its great that they included it here but I wish they had said something about it in the discussion section, especially since at least Craig is likely to have seen the movie version of RENT.
@PixieLovesItAll5 жыл бұрын
@@vsilverisisv Well, it was used in a funeral scene, so I'm inclined to say yes 😂 It would be hard to pick up if you weren't obsessed with RENT at one point or another so I don't judge them at all for missing it as an original source. Honestly most theater people of Craig's age group really are split 50/50, they either love the Broadway version of RENT as it was part of their young adulthood or hate it because it was popular with youth and "didn't deserve it". And I'm inclined to think Craig would think the latter tbh, especially if his opinion is for some reason based on the 2005 movie adaptation.

I love Car Wash; I think you underrated it. Maybe Pryor and Carlin were only added to get people in the seats but all the stories interweave beautifully to give you a day in the life of the time. And one of my favourite parts was TC`s speech to Mona; it made complete sense that she would change her mind after that; he was right. It was great that things didn`t get resolved on that day, but there was hope for all.

A great contender for the show (scene or a whole episode) would be 1975's "A Boy and His Dog" one of the weirdest post apocalyptic movies I've ever seen and bizarrely influential. There's a lot to talk about with that one, would love to hear your thoughts!

For seen it, Dark Passage 1947, With Bogart and Bacall, as its the film that pulled me into black and white films with its unique first person shooting style, and also thank you for brightening my spirits with your backlog for this show, as I was going through it to help me get over the loss of the late great Lenard Nimoy. a man who ment alot to anyone who grew up with the Trek shows, games and movies in the 1990's as without him and Harve Bennett (who also died two days before him) trek would have died long ago before I was born (1988) and the world would have been a hell of alot darker because of it, and also as an unrelated heads up the playlists for season 3 seem to be badly out of order.

Another interesting tidbit about CAR WASH: Producer Norman Whitfield, who wrote and produced hits for Berry Gordy for years at Motown, took a bet from a fellow producer that he couldn't put a hit-making band together from selecting studio musicians for the soundtrack. Not only was Whitfield successful, and the soundtrack had a fistful of hits that burned up the charts at the time, but that group went on to become ROSE ROYCE.

Have you guys seen The Keep (1983)? It's a Michael Mann film that stars Scott Glenn, Jürgen Prochnow, and Ian McKellen about a keep in a Romanian village that is being used as a base by the Nazi's. They accidentally releases an unknown entity that is killing the soldiers one by one. Wonderful eerie atmosphere and gory deaths makes this quite a different movie from the guy that brought the world Heat and Colleteral. Good luck finding a copy of this movie though, since it was only released on VHS and Laserdisc. I myself caught it on Netflix.

Love the Car Wash! A day in the life, you kind of had to be there to fully get this movie. Rose Royce, doesn't get any better. Lot's actors in this cast went on to bigger things. I have seen this film so many times. Iconic for 70's folk. Thanks for reviewing it. :) Otis Sistrunk, Oakland Raiders football player played the cook in the cafe.

I think with the lines of "We'll talk about it tomorrow," the movie gets closer to how many people address arguments and disagreements. They try to delay and avoid the issues as much as they can, and ultimately don't have neat, clean resolutions as most Hollywood movies show. Of course this sort of realism leads to the criticisms you have of the movie with too many stories and plots that aren't developed and resolved.

Ah, Peter Gabriel! This is the closest you've gotten to having a Kate Bush record back there. She did backup on some of his songs and of course they did "Don't Give Up" together. I was very happy when you read some of her lyrics back on the Wuthering Heights episode. Please do a one-off music episode, a music-centric seen it, or pick a movie based on score/soundtrack some day! That would be rad.
