Memphian here, I grew up in Westwood which is where VooDoo Village is located. I graduated High School with this Mane from VooDoo Village. Basically, it’s a group of family members from Haiti that settled there and bought with them, their religious customs. Really nice people that used to stay there and they did not bother anyone, only a few family members remain there as most of them became more Americans than Haitian.

Hello I am also from South Memphis aka Whitehaven. I us to work with a guy that said that he went to VooDoo Village and that they lived underground or the rest of their homes where underground. I don't know how true that is but I have a question are they or Westwood located off of Third? I as because that's what he claims.

As of crime, crime is in every city regardless of religion or spiritual belief. Crime is a lack of social and political infrastructure components, in my honest opinion, but that's a different conversation. Memphis has over 800 faithed based churches/groups, but for the longest time, we were known for embezzlement and now aggravated violent crimes. Crime is in every city regardless of religion or spiritual belief. As for being thankful, yes, I am thankful that anyone acknowledged Memphis in any form or fashion that doesn't concentrate on negative traits. We are a multifaceted city. We carry a strong spiritual and religious history, especially Judaism, as well. However, that's just me and my opinion.

I'm a recent transplant to Memphis and love seeing these videos about my adopted hometown. If you want to read more about the history of Hoodoo in Memphis and the mid-South, Tony Kail (the guy who wrote that Medium article) has written some good books about it. A. Schwab is still on Beale St, and they still sell a ton of candles and oils and all kinds of magick adjacent things.

Beale is a street downtown... There is a couple of blocks that's are cut off from traffic so you can walk down, several bars, restaurants, clubs on the strip... Voodoo Village is about 25 min from Beale Street downtown 3rd Street like your heading to Tunica, MS to the casinos... Come on to Memphis YaYa... But be careful.. these Memphis dudes will push up on a beautiful queen like you ❤️‍🔥💯

Yes I bought this book like 8 years ago called Secret History of Memphis Hoodoo. Y'all should order it. Im a Nashville native, healer and spiritualist though. I had to get the scoop on Tennessee Hoodoo for sure. Memphis is rich in culture, Hoodoo culture, Bluesman and woman also used Hoodoo and they sing about it in their music! It's speaks about a man name Bishop who I've also heard older ppl in Nashville speak of him.

I'm from the Mtown. There is so much history here. As a child we had some many "traditions" that were just normal to our community. I didn't find out that a lot of it was actually hoodoo. Some one mentioned Jewish mysticism in the comments. I remember growing up in North Memphis area close to St. Jude. That area used to be a Jewish community and some of the older homes had Oudji boards in floors as floor furnace covers. I witness them in several of the houses of my childhood friends growing up. Not totally sure if it was related to the Jewish people who used to live in the community but its was very interesting to see. Of course we didnt dare use them. My stepmother removed them from our home when we moved there.

Hello, native Mississippian here and current resident of Memphis. You may not think of Memphis as such a place for rootwork but there's a whole book out there. It's called Stories of Rootworkers and Hoodoo in the Mid-South by Tony Kail. Mississippi has a deep connection to rootwork as well. AW Schwab is still open on Beale Street and it still sells items for rootwork including tarot/oracle cards. It's on the 3rd floor of the store. Beale isn't what it used to be but it's still a great experience. The Ernest Withers Gallery is on Beale as well.

Yes mame, Charles Scwab is still on Beale st. They have anything and everything in there. As far as MOJO or Voodo products _ it's sold there but it's not for the true practitioner. It's more for the average tourist who wants to bring back a souvenir from Beale St. Beale St is located downtown and close to the Mississippi River. It's fun if u want to listen to live music _ delta blues is what made the street what it is today. As far as the distance of Beale to Voodoo Village is roughly a 20mins drive. Voodoo Village is close to the Mississippi/Tennessee border. Another place that's close to Voo Village is Chucalisa Indian Mounds.& VILLAGE. GREAT PLACE TO CHECK OUT.

I have heard of Memphis being Mojo city, but I didn't know about it until I moved to a different part of Tennessee, and started digging into the history. When I finally visited, it felt like a breath of fresh air coming from Clarksville. Seeing so many black people. lol. However, I heard it is really dangerous now. And yes, Beale St. is an actual street.

Memphis got some ENERGY! Memphis was a slave trading post, along with the graves of several Confederates like Robert E Lee. It was also a stop along the under ground railroad and also being on the Ms river which itself holds a ton of energy. It can be overwhelming for those that understand what’s going on. Territorial spirits isn’t an adequate description. A lot of those that don’t know what going on see it manifest as violence and a lot of addiction and “mental illness”. Beale St is a street kind of like bourbon st but a lot smaller though it is in the middle of downtown. I think you may want to look into an area of the city called “Box town” which is a rural area of the city closer to the river. If you remember the stuff in the media about the byhalia pipeline, that part of that. No coincidence they tried to destroy it. You’ll find what you’re looking for there.
