@23:30 - I have worked on jaw crushers in quarries that could take that pile of rubble in one or two bites. Something with a pair of jaws weighing in at 13,000pounds/5900kg each just for the wear dies. There is nothing more satisfying that watching a jaw crusher make a boulder disappear with what appears to be minimal effort. I really, really enjoyed that.
@demolitiondavedrillandblast2 жыл бұрын
Wow, all this rock may yet end up in a crusher. how long do the wear dies last when working with really hard rock?
@TechGorilla19872 жыл бұрын
@@demolitiondavedrillandblast Actually, the harder the rock, the easier it is to crush. The dies are manganese steel and they work harden over time. I imagine the dies could last a couple of years at least. We only replaced one set that large. It was the largest crane I have ever stood next to. We had to use larger than 1 inch/25mm carbon arc gouging wedges JUST to get the retainer bolts out of the top of the die while trying to stand on an extension ladder.

@demolitiondavedrillandblast Жыл бұрын
Hi Bruce, there a 2 ways of doing this, when using a hand drill you start with a 600mm rod, when down to depth you pull it out, and drop in a 1200mm rod and so on, I have rods 4.5m long for the hand drill. When using the drill rig as in this video, the rods have a male thread on the bottom end and a female thread on top end and the rig has a carousel of about 6 rods and an auto handling system to load them and retrieve them.

I understand the reasons for covering the blast with soil - dust, fly rock, noise and smoke mitigation, but doesn't it make it impossible to spot any misfires before the excavator starts disturbing the pile? I know Nonel dets are reliable and pretty forgiving, but it must add another element of complication compared to the old blast mats used in days gone by.
@demolitiondavedrillandblast2 жыл бұрын
Yes, to some extent. There is a handy little work around for this that I usually use. From the last hole in the sequence or from the end of each echelon row, run a piece of shock tube out from under the cover, over the open end of the tube place a piece of electrical insulation tape, when the shot fires the shock wave will punch a hole though the tape over the end of the tube and confirm that the signal tube has propagated all of the way to the last hole(s). This provides reassurance against the most likely cause of failure - damage to the tubes while covering. I call this a witness tube as it bears witness to the shot propagating all of the way to the end. Granted that it does not show up a down hole misfire, this is quite rare when you have done everything correct, however occasionally it does happen and almost always it is not the fault of the detonator but a dynamic desensitization misfire because of the emulsion explosive being damaged by the firing of an adjacent hole, almost always when working in wet, broken ground with close hole spacing. This is why it is important for the shot firer to supervise the dig out to be watching for any un exploded stuff in the muck pile or be ready to investigate when the rock that should be broken and it is not. Thanks for watching. Sorry about the slow response, been busy blowing stuff up!

@@demolitiondavedrillandblast I worked alongside the Shotfirer (we changed contracts before I had the chance to do my shotfirers ticket, so I only had a responsible worker's ticket) on charge up and did re-entries when I worked underground a few years ago. Given the speed that the faces got charged at - always a rush at end of shift - it's a wonder we didn't get more misfires than the occasional few that we did. When they did occur, it was usually right up in the shoulder of the face or less commonly in one of the lifters. I never wotked on stope charging, but I would love to have had the chance as that would have introduced me to Ikon detonators. Love your channel.

At about 17 min in the video you use some long bags of ANFO (due to wet holes). Calculating charge weight with package explosives is easy. How do you calculate explosive charge weight with granular ANFO? I'm guessing you made these bagged charges up yourself.
@demolitiondavedrillandblast2 жыл бұрын
I know that the 51mm lay flat holds 1.67 Kg / Meter or if pouring direct in the hole I know that my 1 Litre measuring jug holds 820 grams. Yes, I make these lay flat anfo bags.

You got it TG, the biggest concern is that when you really belt the decomposed granite it just turns to sand and the customer does not get to see a huge pile of rock that you can point to as justification for the corresponding bill.
This hookup pattern is called control row and reverse echelon, where the control row delay clips are 17ms and the echelon delay clips are all 42ms. This gets it all going very quickly with no holes time spaced closer than 9ms - the critical number for vibration control.
@ferstuck372 жыл бұрын
Dave! good music,Can you tell me do you use the same explosive for all the different types of rock you come across, or for instance if you had hard granite will you use another kind of explosive. If you were shaving an outcrop of rock from a rock face would you need specialized explosive. :)
@demolitiondavedrillandblast2 жыл бұрын
Good questions #37, rule of thumb is that Explosives with a higher velocity of detonation work better in very hard rock. If you were doing a job like the one in this video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXTchmODd9OBmLM or this one - kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaKkcn1noK-MZ5I you would use an explosive that is long and thin to spread the energy evenly.

The system is not bi directional when using Nonel shock tube initiation, if you were to use det cord you could though.
@TechGorilla19872 жыл бұрын
@@demolitiondavedrillandblast Not much really surprises me, but this fact had me scratching my head. I hadn't a clue that those shock tubes were one way only. I just assumed that the flame front would propagate in either direction from the initiation point. Now, my head is trying to process that tube actually spitting the flame front forward from one end to the other in all one direction. Mind blown. It's another reason that I watch stuff where I can learn. I'll be pondering this for the rest of the day. Mission accomplished DD.

Excellent question, sir!

@Tech Gorilla - the tube is bi directional but the delay clips on the end of the tubes, at the top of each hole will not work backward.

golden panda wheel bearing? dave, dont tell me you intentionally installed a less than optimal bearing. recently i needed a bearing for a power tool and found that the size i needed was the same as what was in a fidget spinner i had. what a coincidence. of course i went and bought a quality replacement. golden panda, lol! does golden panda make drilling equipment too?
@demolitiondavedrillandblast2 жыл бұрын
Yeah.... it was in the machine when I got it, have to give it credit that it has lasted a long time. Golden Panda make absolutely everything and they make it so cheap that many of the good brands have shut down shop and no longer make the good gear. Sad really
@vsvnrg32632 жыл бұрын
@@demolitiondavedrillandblast , oh, okay. because you knew the brand name of a wheel bearing, i thought you may have been responsible for choosing a no-name brand over a respected brand which did seem out of character for you who understands the importance of quality products for your livelihood. any trailer that has a compressor on it is going to cop some rough use

@vsv nrg I did not actually fix it, It had to go home on the back of a tilt tray truck and it was only a short distance to the machinery dealer where I purchased it - this guy is very good and does a lot of work for me, as apposed to being a long and expensive trip back to my place. So it went to the brightest compressor technicians around these parts. I knew they also had a dead unit similar to this one in the yard so spare stub axle would also be available if required. Funny thing was that he had had a shot at me for fitting the "YumCha" brand bearing, It was in it when I bought it from you I said. If I have to buy a bearing it will be a good brand.
