I had an MRI scan and diagnosed with advanced osteo arthritis in knees. I manage it very well after building up all the leg muscles in the gym. I play moderate sport and exercise and stretch almost every day. Its a solution thats not for everybody but helps if you are sports inclined.

H i Doc. I hope you are still in practice ! You're discussing what beat me up for no less than 20 years . I was a flooring contractor for 'bout forty yrs. and by the time I was 53 I was hobbling around like an 80 yr. old man ! I had to lay on my side to do installation work - - I had a family to feed . Then a friend suggested a product to me that was made by KNOX and it was titled ( NUTRA-JOINT ) . It contained 7 vits. plus Gelatine ; mix it with juices soups or on salad . NOTHING bad or damaging in the mix ! Within 3 mos.I was on my knees with very little pain or disfunction (except for injuries) for the next 15 years. Hi again Doc. , You may remember from years ago a farmboy turned doctor by the name of Joel Wallick . He produced a series called "Dead Doctors Don't Lie " . He got the ball rolling for for a lot of us who had no choice but to become proactive in our own healthcare. Thank you for this video! I was recently diagnosed with "severe arthritis" on MRI in my shoulder and told I would likely need a replacement within 5 years. I'm only 47! Range of motion is pretty good - certainly acceptable to me. I did add a glucosamine supplement. I did not know that NSAIDS would inhibit cartilage growth! I was told to take.NSAIDS. Thanks so much for that tidbit!

Hi Winston and thanks for your note. Oral glucosamine is not likely to help. You can get a glucosamine cream by prescription that we have developed over more than 25 years and works pretty well, and then there is lots more to do to restore your joint.

If I can be of any help, I was also diagnosed with arthritis in my right shoulder. An orthopedic surgeon also told me that I could be a potential candidate for a shoulder replacement. That was almost four years ago. Since then, I've had PRP therapy. The PRP therapy in itself is not a magical solution. You also have to do every other thing right in order to recover (and it's a very slow process). One thing that I've learned is that the body is smart in the sense that it can heal iself. You also have to be equally smart. That means to change your lifestyle and avoid exercises or movements that can potentially further damage the joint. Shoulder problems rarely come from the shoulder itself. Most of the time, the root cause is a thoracic mobility issue that leads to the shoulder problem in the first place. Having taken all the right steps for the last four years, my shoulder pain has slowly but surely decreased and my ROM has increased. For the record, I'm 53.

Hi Truth Seeker, if you have enough retained range of motion, then it is possible you have enough cartilage left to grow more and save your joint. On the other hand, if your motion is too limited the problem might be too big for recovery.

@@jessieurgea9899 Hi Jessie, this requires a longer conversation. Most likely pain is not related to the meniscus and repair might not be necessary. Key to a decision is whether you can totally straighten and bend at least 90 degrees. If you are content with your preserved range of motion, you likely have choices besides surgery.

I really appreciate this video. I have a knee injury that has lasted over two years and even on the best of days affects range of motion in all directions. I'm take a lot of ibuprofen, but I will stop that immediately. I have taken glucosamine for years, but I just went and found a cream and will start that. Now the only problem is nicotine. I quit over five years ago but I still live with a smoker. They do most of their smoking in their room, and when they are in the car with me they keep the window open. Being an ex-smoker myself I won't make them smoke outside because I know how I would have hated that, but I'm wondering if the amount of exposure affects the amount of negative affects? If I never go in their room while they're smoking and ask them not to smoke in the rest of the house will that maybe be good enough to allow my knee to heal? Well, I guess we'll see. People have kept saying how bad ibuprofen is, and I just kept ignoring it. This was the wake up call I needed, so thank you.

Nutrition matters too, cartilage gets its blood supply from the bone underneath, so reducing blood vessel issues like 'hardening of the arteries' can be very important. Hi Carla, if your hip range of motion is still good, then most likely pain comes from where you are specifically tender. The first big sign of lack of hip joint cartilage is decreased internal rotation at 90 degrees of flexion. If the pain of lying on your side is related to tenderness over the hip bone, then you likely have old injuries to your buttocks tendons. Your body can repair them with the help of a PRP procedure. PRP procedures can also help your body restore joint cartilage.

Thanks for this information Dr.Blatman. I have been diagnosed with Osteo-arthritis of the hips and I had to stop my sport. The specialist told me that hip replacement surgery would be needed. I opted out of the surgery and decided to try changing my life habits, diet and work on herbal remedies. I have already made a huge recovery in just under 2 months. From chronic pain and inflammation to an almost pain free condition is convincing enough to not consider surgery. I had a bad back as well, but I have almost no back pain and I can now easily touch my toes. I still have bone growths that irritate the hip tendons, but even that seems to reduce in severity over time. Would all this improvement be due to some new cartilage formation, at least in part?

Hi and thanks for your note. Our biology inherently regenerates, and cartilage is no exception... so likely yes. More important perhaps is the diet change that has reduced inflammation throughout your fascia. Now may be a good time to add cartilage rebuilding treatments and take advantage of your changes.

With regard to lower back pain, there is no test, injection, or physical exam technique that can identify facet issues as THE major source of pain. Most important than most any x-ray is "where specifically are you tender?" For most people with lower back pain, the butt muscles are more tender than the lower back muscles. If this is true for you, then healing butt muscle fascia is key to resolving your lower back pain.

In my experience glucosamine by mouth never worked for hips. When we used to be able to inject glucosamine it was amazing. Now the best we can do is with a cream that puts glucosamine through your skin. You will need a compounding pharmacist and someone to prescribe. After a couple months you might have some improvement, or at least know you haven’t gotten worse. Bigger is PRP, peptides, and stem cells injected into the joint. \

As you suggest, I found glucosamine to be very effective for reducing knee pain, and it has had lasting effects. If I feel some pain in my knee, I take the medication again and it really works well and quickly. With a problem in my hip on the opposite leg, bone on bone, the same supplement does not bring notable good results. Unfortunately I am living in Japan and I don't know of any way to get treatment other than the hip replacement surgery that has been recommended. I really want to avoid the surgery, I simply endure the pain, better some days than others, and continue working in a profession that requires much physical movement all day. At least your video tells me that an alternative to surgery is possible, so thank you.

I offer a much different suggestion.. damage can be reversed, and your low back pain does not come from the arthritis. True we docs were all taught to blame pain on what is seen on the x-ray, but a lot of what we were taught about pain belongs in the horsepoop drawer. At the end of the day the most important thing to believe is 'where specifically are you tender.' Did your doctor touch you? Also.. We do offer a 'do not eat list' that you can get by signing up for our newsletter... and kidneys do not tolerate high doses of animal protein on a sustained basis.

Indeed, if you are satisfied with current range of motion, it is quit possible to preserve what is present and also reduce pain without medicine. Lost range of motion is more difficult to recover. CLINICAL HISTORY: Left knee pain and ache after running and plaving tennis for 6 months. No history of left knee surger. Concern for medial meniscal tear. COMPARISON: Outside MRI of the left knee from IS dated 2/10/2021. Radiographs of the knees dated 1/19/2021. PROCEDURE: Field Strength: 1.5T Sequences: Multiplanar, multisequence MR images of the left knee were obtained without IV contrast. Contract: None FINDINGS: The medial meniscus is normal. Redemonstration of a discoid lateral meniscus with near complete interval healing of the previously noted tear (series 8, image 13). The cruciate ligaments are normal. The medial and lateral supporting structures are intact. The quadriceps and patellar tendons are normal. The fat pads are normal. There is a superior plica (series 6, image 5) Joint alignment is normal. New high-grade chondral fissuring at the medial patellar facet (series 3, image 10). The most important issue is whether you still have a full range of motion. If so, then your issue is pain.. and the pain is not coming from your joint. The pain can already be gone as the cartilage regenerates.

Solutions for joint pain are similar, no matter the cause... first, can you totally straighten your knee and can you bend it more than 90 degrees to sit in a chair. Change what you eat. Eat fatty red meat and get lots of natural collagen in your diet. Cut out the oxalates, seed oils, sugars, carbs and processed products. You may wish to start with Dr Shawn Baker and the Carnivore diet.. It worked for me.

Hi there and thanks for asking. The KNOX nutra -joint formula was fast and very effective (no longer available) but the baker's Gelatine was effective though it's lacking the other components in Knox's product. It did help relieve pain and produce smooth movements and restore cartilage. I used 1 to 2 packets per day until things started feeling better then reduced it gradually to a maintenance level . Most of the foods these days don't contain these necessary proteins so I used gelatine on an as needed basis and thankfully it helped .@@revathik9225

Oh no! I've been taking Meloxicam for 7 years for arthritis and was just diagnosed with knee arthritis. If I go 3 days without Meloxicam, I can hardly walk or get out of bed. I want my knee cartilage to heal but what do I do about my general arthritis? I did quit eating tomatoes, which helped a lot, but I should probably eliminate wheat as well. Can you give me the research data which states Nsaids will prevent cartilage renewal?

Check out: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7821339/ NSAIDs decrease glycosaminoglycan synthesis. Suggest gluten free, dairy free, mostly sugar free, AND the pain that feels like it is in your knee does not come from the knee joint. When you repair and unkink the fascia that moves the joint, pain mostly goes away.... often before cartilage can regenerate.... although both are important.

Have no intention of quitting. 4 months ago I injured my left shoulder and found out the cartilage is completely gone. Don't like the idea of shoulder replacement. Can you help? I am a Veteran but I doubt the VA will pay for any of this.

Hello to Kansas. There is a a good chance we can help. We can start with video visit, seeing your X-rays, and prescription for glucosamine cream. If there is some improvement in the first 2 months, then injections of growth factors into the joint are likely to be more helpful and worth the investment. You may have to modify your weight lifting.

Inflammatory arthritis and motion reduced already makes hips much harder to save. Pain comes from a mixture of joint and fascia injury, range of motion is usually mostly related to joint. Her current range of motion and restriction are important indicators of possible success.

Hi, my mother has grade 2 and above almost knee arthritis at 52. Doctor recommended glucosomine choindritin vitamin c hyaluronic formulation supplements. On our own we are having vitamin c, omega 3 fatty acid rich food, bone broth and doing fasting for 12 hrs and above and physical exercises meditation breath work, I have so far searched that cartilage does not regenerate. We are trying to avoid knee surgery. Any suggestions or feedback from your side doctor, will help.

Contrary to what you have read, cartilage will regenerate. One of my videos shows before and after X-rays showing knees with cartilage growth. And glucosamine is more important than what you have started on your own. Chondroitin and hyaluronic acid do not seem to make as much difference.

Cartilage heals slowly. In order to allow a joint to repair, two things have to happen... you need to wear out more slowly, and also restore cartilage more quickly than your body can do by itself. Part of wearing out more slowly involves not doing deep knee bends. Part of restoring more quickly is using glucosamine sulfate that works.

Another thing, if you have a product that will work for hips with little to no cartilage, how can I get the product in South Africa? I ask on behalf of my Mother. Hi Sonia, often people wait too long with their hips, and range of motion has decreased to where hips are most difficult to save. In the US, Glucosamine cream made by the compounding pharmacy can be prescribed by her doctor. After that we have peptides, hyaluronic acid, injectable glucosamine, prolozone, PRP, and stem cell treatments. If her range of motion is still good enough, pain might be mostly myofascial and not from the joint. This pain might be more easily treatable. Unfortunately, it takes more than a few weeks to show some help with cartilage issues. Hope this helps.

Does this work if you have advanced bone on bone OA in the hip? i can still walk short distances without pain meds but i feel the bone on bone and i am at 30-40% range of motion now. I noticed reduction in pain if do intermittent fasting, or 24-72hr fasting, and removing grains, sugar, oils and meat for short periods of time. Is it too late for me, i am partially bone on bone, there is a little cartilage left but it seems to be dwindling. Will liquid Glucosamine work long term to grow cartilage? I tired PRP injection and that did not work. I am scheduled for THR 8/15/2023 but i am hoping to push that out for a few months or a year and see if i can try one more time to get cartilage to grow. In general, the more advanced your issue, the more difficult will be the recovery. Is the ball of your femur still round? or is it flat on the top? Are you able to internally rotate your hip when it is flexed 90 degrees? These issues are usually more important than pain in answering your question. Also, you could spend a lot of money and effort working to save your hip, and need it replaced anyway. Hip replacement surgery usually goes well and range of motion is usually quickly restored. I will make a new video and explain this in the near future.

Hi M, How is your range of motion? If you can totally straighten and bend more than 90 degrees, likely your pain is not coming from your joint. With a zoom appointment we could check that out. Decreasing the pain by learning how to unkink the myofascia that moves the knee, and also using glucosamine to restore cartilage may be the best we can do by remote. DrB

Hi, I damaged my cartilage pretty bad. I’ve been taking glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, and hyaluronic acid for a week. I’m still have popping and clicking noises when I strengthen out my knees. I can feel the clicks/glides, when I lay on my back, my knees feels hot, is it inflammation? Hi and most of your answers would need an exam. I can tell you that oral supplements often take a while to feel improvement. They do work for knees if you are using a brand that works. You should be able to feel improvement at 2 months and continued improvement for several months after. If no improvement by 3 months, most likely symptoms are not coming from the joint or your brand of supplement is not working.

@@blatmanhealth My joint space shown on x ray was very narrow, but my doctor said it’s normal, he said my insurance would deny my coverage if I wanted a MRI. Everything got worst few days after though, now I cannot take the stairs, so I can’t make it to a doctor’s office. By the time I can walk on stairs, MRI probably won’t show much damage at all and I would hate for my insurance to deny the coverage. Thank you, I’ll continue with my supplement.

All NSAIDs have this effect... not tylenol/acetaminphen. Herbal medicines like boswellia do not have this effect on glycosaminoglycan synthesis.

@@YZJY Tylenol is not an NSAID. Tylenol is not anti-inflammatory. It is an analgesic. In plain english, it reduces pain without reducing inflammation Naproxen sodium, aspirin, and ibuprofen are all NSAIDs. They both reduce pain and inflammation. When I was having my PRP procedure for my knee I was told not to use NSAIDs for 4 weeks prior and 6 weeks following the procedure. Now, because of what Dr. Blatman said, I'm going to discontinue all NSAIDS permanently. I was told they interfere with blood platlets needed to repair the joint. Yes indeed.

Hello, Dr. My x-rays show both shoulders barely any cartilage left . On my left shoulder at times I hear cracking when I lift weights I am ex -dancer and only 56 years of age. Sorry the glucosamine injection is no longer available, it was taken away by the FDA... we were told that since we have ibuprofen for joint pain we don't need glucosamine by injection. However to your point, it may come from the shell, NOT the fish. Allergies are generally to the fish.

get the iron down . Iron levels suggested are too high. Need to be down around 50 to 100 under the European metric measures. Longevity seems to be linked to lower iron. Have haemo as well. such joy. Yes, I think so. Discs are under compressive forces 24 hr/day, either from gravity or from muscle contraction. Inversion tables and hanging (even 30-45 degrees) put a distracting force on the spine to allow for some expansion or rehydration of a disc. Additionally, stem cells can be injected into the disc. It is good to know, however, that degenerative disc disease does not generally cause most of your pain. Most of the pain comes from injured fascia, and for many people, most pain can go away treating and healing the injured and kinked myofascia.

Now that I know what ibuprofen does to cartilage, I'm thinking I destroyed my own shoulder trying to relieve my back. I averaged about 3600 mg per day for around three years. (No insurance.) Applying glucosamine cream 3-4x/day to your toe joint is likely to be helpful if you are not too damaged. Might take a couple months to tell a difference. Can also inject PRP, growth factors, and stem cells into the joint. These choices can also be helpful.

Thanks fo your note. Allopurinol has a long list of side effects and joint pain is on the list. I do not know if the drug negatively affects cartilage. If the glucosamine works, the allopurinol won't matter. Give the glucosamine a couple months to work.

But an inflammatory diet can accelerate cartilage degeneration by activating the immune system against the joint or decreasing the blood supply that comes to cartilage through the bone. Labrum is a ring of tough tissue that encircles the joint surface of the scapula and helps hold the humeral head in place. It does not come into play with simple motions and gentle lifting. It is important with forceful motion and forceful throwing. If torn and you need the labrum, surgical repair might be your best option. Cartilage of the humeral head can be restored if it is not too far gone and you can balance daily wear and tear with your biologic ability to restore.

Hi Jen, it is possible to to achieve some disc regeneration by injecting stem cells into the disc. Not something I can do. Traction in form of inversion table (even 30 degrees is helpful) is often a good idea. AND if you have pain attributed to the discs,.... pain is not what we were taught. Pain comes from the tight tender cords and ropes of muscle and fascia in your neck, upper shoulders, upper back, and jaw... and not generally your discs and nerves. We usually do not need to restore discs to get out of pain. Worn discs often come from shear force when facet ligaments allow too much extra motion. We can help tighten these ligaments with PRP and stem cells.

Hello and thanks for your question. NSAID's prevent glycosaminoglycan synthesis, necessary for cartilage growth and repair. Nicotine constricts blood vessels, decreasing blood supply to cartilage and consequences ensue. Hope this helps.

Three things to work on changing where you have some level of control: change how you use the joint so it wears out more slowly, add glucosamine by mouth (knees) or through skin (all joints) to help your body grow cartilage more quickly, and stop taking NSAIDs that prevent cartilage growth and restoration.

Im 25 and was boxer but now i had surgery and cartilage damage 3 :/ i coulf cry realy I change to vegan and do FASTING 20:4 for HGH and 16:8 FASTING Also i take many supplements im hope i atleast can rebuild a little bid of cartilage.. What would u recommend for me what i must do more? I est healthy and think my Ambulant Physio start soon.. Can u give a Link for the Glucosamine and Chirodontrin cream?

I guess in a perfect world all these kinds of treatments would be available in the whole world and for free. Or at least not so expensive. I have so much cartilage damage. It's insane. The pain is beyond EXTREME!! Shoulders knees elbows, chest and back😢 feels like I'm on fire😬 I'm in so much pain I would even give myself over for experiment for the latest experimental treatment. As long as I can get relief. Pain medicine don't help at all and obviously won't fix any damage. I wish there was a alternative treatment to joint replacement. That actually worked 100% perhaps a kind of artificial cartilage that can be sprayed on. Have scientists come up with something quick. I can barely get through a minute of pain

Christopher H. Evans, Ph.D., Director of Rehabilitation Medicine Research Center, Mayo Clinic say cartilage can not be regrown it lacks stem cell to grow it and has no blood supply. I would also like to know the reason nicotine inhibits this so called growth.

Thanks, and Dr Evans is not the only source of such information. Orthopedic textbooks say the same thing. I started to wonder years ago if this even makes sense... the human body grows 27 billion cells and regenerates intestinal lining every 3 days, new skin every 7-10 days, even new brain cells.. does it make any sense that our biology is unable to repair/regenerate cartilage even to repair from daily wear and tear? Cartilage gets its blood supply by diffusion through the bone under it. So cardiovascular disease and nicotine cutting off or otherwise decreasing this delicate blood supply accelerates degeneration/wear and tear perhaps by further limiting the body's ability to repair its cartilage. Soon, I'll post a short video showing before and after X-rays of knees that demonstrate the growth of cartilage with stem cell treatment.

I can't lift weight, stand for 5 minutes and there is pain.It is stil better than before now. I am not in a position to travel to the US for treatment. Can you help me to restore and regrow my knee cartilage and get cured. Thanks

At 1:36, did you say "as long as you don't KNEEL, smoke, or take NSAID medications"? I understand that a person should not smoke or take NSAID medications (which would inhibit carilage regeneration), but does KNEELING prevent cartilage regeneration?

@@blatmanhealth Thank you for your reply. I will do my best to avoid kneeling. However, it will not be possible for me to avoid it entirely so long as I continue in the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which often involves the participants kneeling on padded wrestling mats while they grapple with each other. I may have to consider giving it up.

Can you restore miniscus also?

Not likely able to regrow a removed meniscus but repair is possible. Fortunately for most people the meniscus is not that important for general function, and missing it does not cause pain.

Hi Daniel, most unlikely to restore meniscus. Edges have to be from fresh injury to have a chance to grow back together. But unless you pivot and twist, the meniscus is not likely your biggest issue.

Will this work for hips with no cartilage?

If the hip joint moves, there is cartilage. If a person is content with their preserved range of motion, then there can be a reasonable chance for joint restoration to make this motion much more comfortable. If a person is not satisfied with their range of motion, then perhaps they waited too long and it is possible but unlikely that motion can be significantly improved without joint replacement. People often wait too long for a successful outcome for hip restoration.

Hi Nasir, xrays of your knees can show how worn is your cartilage. And most of the pain may come from muscle and fascia injuries from your past. These will likely need attention as well as possible help for your cartilage.
