I’ve had a rush 24 for ten years. I’ve used it daily for work, repeatedly for travel and camping, and have had very few issues. I had to reinforce a little stitching on the “collar” portion of the shoulder straps, and replaced two of the plastic buckles after a few too many times getting it caught in the car door, but a great pack for tough use. I added a 2” strap for the waist. I was looking for a slightly larger pack, and the pillow demonstration in this was all I needed! Thanks!

I'm glad I could help. The Rush series of backpacks are really made to last. Mine are still going strong after only 6 years of use. It sounds weird saying only 6 years, but you have almost twice as much time on yours.

Thanks for the thorough comparison! I have the rush 12 for edc/short trips. I've had it 4 years & it's been around the world with me. The only issue I ever had was busting a buckle on 1 of the sinch straps when I slammed a truck door on it. I was just looking at upgrading to the 24 or 72 for longer trips & your review really helped.

I carry the same rush 12. It's been abroad some, and it's been on plenty of hikes and weekend getaways, but mostly its a combo edc and get home bag. Like Mister Mayor here, I'm thinkin about goin 72 also, just so that I have the extra space in case I want it, just planning to keep it cinched tight mostly. fond of those double compression straps. I have a kelty, a north face and a teton for actual backpacking. I'm eager to compare a those with a tactical pack covering more miles.

I also have both packs and use the Rush 72 as my EDC. While you cannot fill every pocket to the brim with the Rush 72's added depth you can use every single pocket for something and still have room in the main dump area in each section. This is why I use it over the Rush 24 as my EDC, room to spare. I have been EDC'ing it to work for about 5 years weighing in around 40 pounds, it has held up really well. Aside from having to stitch up some fraying high wear areas on the yoke in the first year I have not had any issues with it's durability. Thanks for the review.

I use all the pockets in my Rush 72. You just need to put a little thought in how you pack your load out and use the pockets accordingly. To say if you use one pocket you will lose the use of another is just wrong.
@newageselfreliance
@newageselfreliance 5 жыл бұрын
The fact that you have to plan how you pack proves that you can't take full advantage of each pocket. It gives you options on how you wanna use each pocket but they do run into each other. The pocket sizes change based on what you have in the pockets behind.

Good job! I use my large alice pack because of the durability and the one huge compartment and the frame. When I want my sleeping gear to be packed eternally I use my U.S Military CFP90 rucksack.It’s a lot bigger but it’s nice to have most everything inside of the pack it also has an eternal frame that is way more comfortable than my Alice. Now these are for 24-72hr options or more but I just bought a Hidden Woodsmen DayRuck and it’s built like a tank and it also has Molle. I plan on this being my go to for day hike or overnighters. It’s just a awesome bombproof pack. The 5:11 packs seems to be another awesome choice. Keep up the great work!!!👍🏼👌🏼👊🏼

Haha, I'm not sure that "one bag to rule them all will ever exist, but keep searching! I am on a budget and cannot see paying that much for bags that I will have to molle things to, but i have heard good things about 5.11 stuff. The Rush bags look very similar to the LAPG Atlas bags (I think the LAPG ones were modeled off the Rush ones) and I'm debating which one of those to get for my next bag purchase. That might be a cool comparison video for down the road. Comparing the Rush bags to their budget "equivalents".
@newageselfreliance
@newageselfreliance 6 жыл бұрын
That is actually a really good idea. I know that LAPG copied the Rush packs but when it comes to saving money I wonder if the quality is worth the savings. I wear LAPG operator pants all the time and they have served me well at a very budget price. Maybe the packs are the same way???
@darthblade2016
@darthblade2016 6 жыл бұрын
Hehe, sometimes i have good ideas. I have some of their LAPG brand gear and it definitely seems like good quality, especially for the price. I mean, even if the Atlas 72 doesn't last quite as long as the Rush 72, the LAPG one is $70 compared to the $150+ for the 5.11 one of similar size. I've seen a couple channels do reviews on the Rush and Atlas bags separately, but not one comparing the two so far.

I use the 24 as a daypack. It fits everything I might need in an emergency and also the stuff I want to make videos on. I think if you had it and utilized to its full potential you would have everything you could need and more. Thank you the website is WAY more work then I thought it was going to be but it is a lot of fun writing down my ideas and sharing them with everyone. It is also a place I can do whatever I want with no worries of being banned or my videos removed. It is a place I can say or do whatever I want and there is nothing anyone can say or do about it lol. I have been thinking about making a section about guns on the website but I don't personally know enough to really help anyone. I think if my website gets bigger and I get more traffic from people that are more knowledgeable then myself that is when I will make it happen.

Good review. Pockets dont save or make space, I see them as a marketing con for tactic-cool geeks. This pack, the 72, considering its class should hold inside a MSS sleep system and a PC. If the 72 cant hold MSS on the inside then it is too small structurally to hold it the MSS on the outside in a practical manner. 72 hours means over nights, and therefore it should accomodate winter sleep system, other wise it is a summer pack.
@newageselfreliance
@newageselfreliance 8 ай бұрын
That is one thing I always wondered too. Even 24 hours means sleeping for at least one night, but neither of these fits a sleeping bag very well. Unless you are carrying the bare-bone basics neither of these packs are big enough for the hourly rating on them. They are great packs when it comes to going to a hotel or someone's house where you will be sleeping in a bed or on someone's couch. then they are perfect but on their own, they lack space in my opinion.

I have a Rush 12, I’ve never seen better quality heavy duty bags anywhere. Thinking about getting the 72, it has all the room I need for a bug out bag with no external pouches needed. I just wish 5.11 would make a version of the Rush series WITHOUT molle or Velcro for a non tactical grey man look. In terms of inner organisation I’m yet to see better. Am using a Kelty Redwing 44 in a dark grey as a BOB and it is a great bag, super lightweight with an internal frame. However it lacks the heavy duty hard use materials, the ‘bomb proof’ feel and the awesome inner organisation of the Rush series so I’m considering the 72. It’s a choice between lightweight and heavy duty reliability! Thanks..good review...

It's hard to find anything from 5.11 that doesn't have Molle Webbing on it. I have looked for a pack made of the same 1050D nylon but it seems everything made with that same material is "tactical" with lots of Molle. If you do end up finding something that is heavy-duty let me know.

@@newageselfreliance Only non-molle tactical packs I've seen are the Kelty MAP 3500, the Kelty Redwing tactical series and the Blackhawk 3 day assault pack (37L, 1000D nylon, looks awesome but has no internal organization.) None have the awesome internal organization of the Rush series...

Awesome video, I currently use a Swiss IBEX for work (IT repair) and do not need to go camping (eagle scout so that will happen to) but I need a bigger bag with more pockets for the admin aspect. The admin panel of this one looks promising and i'm going to check it out. I think I have just the right amount of small items that I can organize almost all of the pockets for my use case. Again thanks for the great informing video. I do wonder if you think a Klean canteen 20 ounce will easily fit in the side pockets of the 24?
@newageselfreliance
@newageselfreliance 6 жыл бұрын
When it comes to the side pocket on the 24 a 20oz Gatorade bottle fits in there perfect with room to spare. So even if your Klean Kanteen is a little taller it should still fit in my opinion. Thanks for the video. How durable are those molly attachments? I am looking to upgrade my pack and never have used the molly system before. I plan to get the 72 liter one and will be getting the molly attachment for the water like the one you got from self reliance outfitters. I always have a 64 ounce water bottle with me and I do a lot of running with my backpack. So my concern is that the molly pack holding the 64 oz water bottle will bounce around a lot and possibly break the molly attachments. How secure is the molly attachments?
@newageselfreliance
@newageselfreliance 2 жыл бұрын
If you run the Molle over and under like you are supposed to do it will hold really well. If you slide the straps behind the webbing without weaving it then there might be a problem. I would not recommend using the Molle Sticks on a 64oz water bottle only because with the weight I would want the best connection possible. However, here is a video that might help you understand what I'm talking about kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnK6kqOclJypo7c If you have a first aid kit or something lighter than water the Molle Sticks might help you as well.

I am looking at the 72 but I am not sure it will carry correctly. I am 5'3" so some packs hang to low. I also need a really padded hip belt to carry the load. Can you tell me how thick it is?
@newageselfreliance
@newageselfreliance 4 жыл бұрын
The hip belt isn't really padded at all. It isn't very big either. I have found that "tactical" backpacks are not made for comfort. @@newageselfreliance Absolutely. They both have their pros and cons. I think i will keep both, the 24 for going into the woods or for a bike ride, the 72 is great for travelling. It would be cool if the 24 would support an easier access to water bottles as you have to open the main area every time. This is a USP for the 72. Still want to check out the TAD Fast Pack, if its really worth its price or just so high because of the "Made in USA". The shoulders straps look more comfortable but the zip lines are not water protected, which is def. a downside. Even if the material is water repellent, it will go trough the zipper holes.

i own a 72, and i find that i can fit an entire crusader cookset into one side pouch(which i LOVE), and a LARGE 10'x10' tarp in the other side. for the top compartment, i put a compass and mapping tools into the mesh pocket, and slip a folded map into the slip pocket. i LIKE the hip belt. comfortable for me, but i haven't attached any pouches to it yet. probably attach a foraging pouch and knife to it in the future. i don't use the water bladder pocket for a water bladder. i don't like the weight. looking at the MOAB 10 and attachment system. still undecided. way i see it, is all the non essentials in the 72, and then use the tier system and put all essential items for survival into the MOAB 10. IMO the only thing the 72 needs is a stiffer bottom on the bottom of the main pouch for stability.

well, i use the condor II because it's all i have. i'm going to buy the rush 72. the condor II isn't big enough all of the time. i don't go long distance hiking though. i'm not real picky. it doesn't have to have all the pockets and such, but i do like them. personally for me i would prob nev buy a pack bigger than the 72 because i wouldn't want to haul that much gear with my body. get around 40 pounds of gear and i'm too worn out to enjoy myself. i also don't go out in the heat too much either. i do fall and spring trips and i live on a farm where we camp out at a base camp often but in summer we do it about dark and come back in the house about 1pm or so. condor II is smaller and doesn't have all the pockets but i like it a lot even still. one thing i don't care for about the rush 24 is the top outer pocket being sewn into halfs instead of one big pocket. thumbed up - thx4 video.

The numbers on the Rush series stands for hours. So the Rush 24 is a 24 hour day pack while the Rush 72 is a 72 hour or 3 day pack. I don't think the 24 will be big enough for a full 3 day kit with food and everything but if you need something lightweight with just the bare bone essentials than it might work.

The thing people like about the Rush 24 is that you can use it as a carry-on for an Air Plane. The Rush 72 is too large for Plane use. I have never been on a Plane in my life so don't take that as fact.

Hay buddy good vid. I have a rush 72 and I'm wanting to down size. And run a battle belt with mollie. I've run the 72 with the belt but it's just to long. I like the belt on the 72. As I use it with my chest rig. But I dislike the open helmet area. As it moves around esp with mollie attached to the admin. So I'm thinking of getting a 24. But I need the belt. I may make a video and like it here so I can get your opinion.

I'm about 5'9" I don't mind it for short trips. I wouldn't do any long distance hiking with the bed roll on the bottom but I wouldn't wanna use the Rush 72 for long distance hikes in general. I have a Kelty Coyote 80 that I use for longer hikes.

There is a lot of mixed information on these backpacks, I'm pretty sure that is why they are my best performing videos. I really don't know the exact Cubic Inch space on either of these bags that is why I used the pillow to show the difference in size. I really like the hip belt that the 72 comes with and even tho they aren't as comfortable as a tradition backpacking backpack they are still comfortable and very versatile.

I would say in things like this just to go straight to the source. Not to hard to grab it from them. If I type in “Rush 72 Backpack” it will pull up a link straight to 5.11 and the back pack. I am trying to decide on the 72 and the 25. I have a hiking pack that is the same size as the 72 and trying to decide if I wanna go as big or smaller.

That is true. I just see so many people talking about these packs and how "there are so many pockets to put things in". In reality, there are a lot of pockets but you can't fill all of them, you have to pick and choose which ones you want to use. There isn't really a way to use them all at the same time as people have said in other videos.

All pockets and pouches are FLAT on the 24 except the 2 inner ones, like you said if one is used the other is useless. Same for the 72 except the 'water bottle' pockets. the admin pocket on both is only 1'' deep' again virtually flat. Waist belt on the 72 is useless. Releives no weight, only side to side movement, which puts all weight on shoulders. These are not 'outdoor' packs

Tactical bags aren't built for comfort that's for sure. They are very modular and can be used for many different things. They are more of a jack of all trades master of none kinda pack. I use an old Kelty Coyote 80 for when I go backpacking. It is MUCH more comfortable and puts the weight on my hips. Thank You so much for watching I really appreciate the support!!!

I do not think that the waist belt is useless. For myself I found out, that it is all about the form fit between the back panel of the pack and the "hollow curve" of your lower back. The function of the hip belt and its fins is only to prevent your rucksack from slipping over the transition to your ass. For example - on my Rush 24, I inserted half round elements of styrofoam behind the plastic board of the back panel. Once the so shaped pack is perfectly sitting on your back (vertical position), you do have some relief on the shoulder straps. Of course, I had to add a hip belt (I found one at Tasmanian Tiger (1.5'') which fits perfectly into the pre-mounted brackets). I will do the same mod on the R 72, which I will receive next week. On that one, there is already an S-curved Aluminum profile on the board, which can be bent accordingly. I am afraid my explanation is too complicated, but I do hope that the main idea can be understood. Best regards from Germany!

You seem to be complaining about the bags having too many pockets/pouches that remove internal space when filled up but naturally in any bag, you fill it up... it is going to make the negative space smaller. Pretty sure 5.11 put all of those pockets, zippers, compartments ect. to give you multiple options and not to just use every single pouch because it's there
@newageselfreliance
@newageselfreliance 4 жыл бұрын
I agree. My favorite part of these packs is the options that they provide. I just see other videos talking about how it can hold so much because of the pockets and pouches where I don't see that as the case.
@h3llrayzor59

Not a comfortable pack.. AT ALL!!! The straps dig into your shoulders after a few miles on the trail. The straps have no load lifters so the pack sags down & away from your shoulders thus making for a less than appealing time out in nature. Also, if you are more than say 5' 10" MAX, it won't fit your Torso anyways. The waist strap will not sit on your waist. I found out the hard way as I'm 6'5" tall. Don't get me wrong... It's a good quality pack... It's just not for me.
@newageselfreliance
@newageselfreliance 4 жыл бұрын
I agree these packs are not as comfortable as hiking style backpacks. They are built way better though. It is a weird trade-off I don't understand why they don't make a comfortable hiking style pack made with the same materials as the Tactical packs? You would think comfort would be the most important part of any backpack.
