I completely agree about the screen shaking and am glad to hear it mentioned. In some games I have seen it is nearly constant and the effect is considerable. Screen shake in older games isn't particularly common and the amount of shake is much less when I do encounter it. That effect gives me a form of motion sickness and can be quite exhausting. I've already decided to avoid some games that otherwise look great because of it. In the case of Blazing Chrome, which I have been keeping up with for over a year, it doesn't look quite as bad as some games, but it is still a concern. I might be more sensitive than most, but I also think the effect as it is commonly applied doesn't add much. As you say, it also makes it harder to actually appreciate the game assets. I did mention it to the developer a time or two and I've seen it brought up on the game's Steam discussion, but I've never seen it acknowledged. I can play older run-n-gun games that give satisfying feedback through strong sound design and little or no screen shaking. It's not necessary and could at least be optional. I may still get Blazing Chrome as it looks good otherwise and I like the developer, but I certainly won't pay anywhere near the full price because of it.

I really appreciate when games like these show up, because it seems like there are a LOT of indie games that claim to be made to look like they're from NES/SNES/Mega Drive but don't look that legit. I know pixelart isn't easy but it gets tiring to see the same weird flat visuals in so many indie games. So the visuals and animations were what lured me into this one. Glad it also turned out to be fun to play.
@NYCJoeBlack4 жыл бұрын
Game Over Hell - I am a huge fan of Contra III: The Alien Wars for the Super Nintendo and Contra: Hardcorps for the Sega Genesis, so Blazing Chrome is perfect for me! My only complaint would have to be that I wished the graphics and the art style were closer to the Super Nintendo’s Contra game as I prefer that over the Sega Genesis.

I like it a hell of a lot more than any official Contra. It feels so much like a passion project by fans for fans in many ways like Sonic Mania was but without the official license. Konami should be kicking themselves that they didn't pick this game up for themselves to brand it officially but then modern Konami hasn't got a frickin' clue about video games anymore. They're a total shadow of the classic 8/16-bit version of the company. Their new Contra game looks likely to be another misstep One lil note, you CAN play 2 player online on the PS4 version using the neat Shareplay function of the console. Means only one of you even needs to own the game, but it has to be with someone you're friends with, rather than able to seek out a random player. Not suitable for people with poor internet connections cos the 2nd player will be technically be receiving a video back of their gameplay so lag is more likely but if your connection is great iit shouldn't be too bad. But obviously for a game like this, local is better just for response times. :) Good review, sir. I had Contra 3 on my SNES but i had mixed feelings about it. The side platform parts were great but I absolutely detested the ugly Mode 7 top down levels. They just played poorly and looked bad to me. Was one of many reasons I far preferred the Genesis game Hard Corps. Anyways have a good weekend. :)

great review ^^ you touched all the points I felt about the game as well, though I did feel that like most games by Joymasher, they really need to get in the habit of letting you rebind your controls because at least on the switch version, you have to use the shoulder buttons while the triggers get to do absolutely nothing, im hoping that gets patched.

I beat the fourth mission last night, and I can't imagine pulling it off without checkpoints. Dear God, every time I thought the boss I was facing was THE boss, there was another section to the level. The 3D shooting section comes out of left field, but is done so well I didn't really mind it. Every challenge boils down to pattern memorization - and abusing the roll maneuver.

The fact that games like this can still be this much fun in today's games industry only reinforces my firm belief that games were better in the old days, that the games industry is in the worst state it has been since the Great Crash, and not even the march of technology can compensate for the decay of industry standards. The 90s and early 2000s truly were the Golden Age of Gaming.
@duffman185 жыл бұрын
What? The fact that games like this are released today means that today is bad and the past is better? Surely that should be the other way around. We've got more amazing retro style games today than ever before. And more ways to play them, less of the exclusivity BS. Plus we've got more ways than ever to play all of those old classics from the 8 and 16 bit era. For far cheaper (or free if you wanna go the emulation route). We're in a golden age of gaming. Every old classic ever, plus more great retro style games than ever, since most games back in the day weren't great. But modern retro games have a way better ratio of good games to bad games, as they've got all the classics to learn from their mistakes, plus game design is an actual academic field now. It's not like back then when so many games had unavoidable BS and game breaking level design because they had no idea what was the right way of doing things as it hadn't been invented yet You can point to microtransactions and stuff, but I don't own a single game with microtransactions and yet I've still got hundreds of great games and not enough time to play all of them But yeah I grew up with the master system and mega drive. I stopped gaming after the PS2 era to go to university, didn't want any distractions. Only got back into gaming the last 2 years or so, and gaming is so much better now it's crazy. Even the idea of buying a digital game and downloading it and playing it without even getting out of bed is a crazy new thing to me and I love it, and it's another sign of why gaming is so great today. There's such an enormous wealth of games these days, that it doesn't matter what your niche is, it'll be filled. You can be a hard line old classic and retro style gamer, only playing 2D games, and that niche has thousands of options on every system for you to play. Or you could only like first person shooters, for example, and have thousands of games in that niche too Or you can only want to play arcade games. Not only can you play perfect ports of arcade classics on even handheld consoles these days (which is crazy in itself), you can actually buy arcade machines now at reasonable consumer prices, custom built if you want, with hundreds of arcade games built in, or you can play on a console or pc with an arcade stick that's actually way better than the original ones on machines. Just think, that's actually insane if you were around back then when arcades were big. Trust me, having these arcade games in your own home is a big fucking deal. Kid me would have thought it would never be possible, but now hey I can play arcade street fighter 2 while taking a shit. Im so glad I got back into games. Because its better than its ever been
@ArcaneAzmadi5 жыл бұрын
@@duffman18 You raise some good points, but let me just explain: my point is that this game actually proves that, for all the fancy multi-billion polygon-pushing "triple-AEYYY" graphics, "modern" games aren't actually any BETTER than the games we used to play back in the 16-bit era. My point is that we weren't poor, deprived pity cases suffering in miserable boredom for our lack of gigantic open world skinner box "live services", the games on the cutting edge were ones that played and looked like this such as Contra 3 and all the other great titles of the Golden Age, and it was good. It wasn't "retro", it was what we called "AAA" back then, and it was awesome. While having all this retro goodness is nice, it's still just a niche, a throwback, not reflective of the mainstream at all. Nowadays, the mainstream "triple-AEYYY" industry that once gave us classics like, well, Contra 3, and Super Metroid and Chrono Trigger and Tekken 3 and Metal Gear Solid and Soul Calibur and Silent Hill 2 isn't interested in just making a good game and selling it to us- they're only interested in selling us a an overhyped bad game with the option of giving them an indeterminate amount of extra money to make it incrementally less bad. It's good that this retro and indie scene is so strong, because it's very nearly the only place we can escape the absolutely contemptible way we're treated by the big-name "triple-AEYYY" publishers. It's still perfectly possible for a self-respecting gamer to have a great time, but it's simply undeniable that the major industry itself is sick and rotting to the point of collapse, completely choked by its own infinite greed.
