CLIP DESCRIPTION:
In the town meeting, Gabby Johnson (Jack Starrett) gives an unintelligible pep talk.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Vulgar, crude, and occasionally scandalous in its racial humor, this hilarious bad-taste spoof of Westerns, co-written by Richard Pryor, features Cleavon Little as the first black sheriff of a stunned town scheduled for demolition by an encroaching railroad. Little and co-star Gene Wilder have great chemistry, and the delightful supporting cast includes Harvey Korman, Slim Pickens, and Madeline Kahn as a chanteuse modelled on Marlene Dietrich. As in Young Frankenstein (1974), Silent Movie (1976), and High Anxiety (1977), director/writer Mel Brooks gives a burlesque spin to a classic Hollywood movie genre; in his own manic, Borscht Belt way, Brooks was a central player in revising classic genres in light of Seventies values and attitudes, an effort most often associated with such directors as Robert Altman and Peter Bogdanovich . Some of this film's sequences, notably a gaseous bean dinner around a campfire, have become comedy classics.
CREDITS:
TM & © Warner Bros. (1974)
Cast: Liam Dunn, Jack Starrett
Director: Mel Brooks
Producer: Michael Hertzberg
Screenwriters: Mel Brooks, Norman Steinberg, Andrew Bergman, Richard Pryor, Alan Uger

It's a close run thing for me between this and Young Frankenstein. Each is absolutely peak, though. This is much more slapstick, cartoon, etc. But, really, at such a high level. It takes real genius to elevate the "crudity" of this movie, and Brooks et al. really delivered. 😂

When I and my partner were on tour in '74, we took a quick break and went to a movie the one night we were off in Newport Beach, CA and flipped a coin to go see "Blazing Saddles". We both laughed so hard we were crying. It was almost like being on mushrooms! At points it was almost hard to breath and I hardly ever laughed out loud. It has been one of my two favorite movies of all time, along with "Dumb and Dumber" but Blazing Saddles has the edge. I introduced by 7 year old daughter to it in 1999 (much to the chagrin of my wife) and we have both maintained the same fresh hilarity every time we've seen it or watched a clip since. It is so over the top in every aspect with such brilliant comedic timing, it is fresh laughter every time I see any of it. And this seen with Howard Johnson (I think) proclaiming "Now who can argue with that?" has been used in business negotiations from the States to Africa to the Caribbean. I continue to be amazed by the people from even the other side of the world who immediately recognize and laugh at that quote, saying "Blazing Saddles!" with no other reference. It's become a pretty helpful tool. I wish there was someone in the new film industry with half as much talent, half as much timing, half as many cojones to come up with something this funny that while kind of rude, is still innocent with a hilarity to it. By the way for you aficionados of this movie, I saw an interview on KZbin with Conan O'Brian interviewing Mel Brooks talking about the "run away" scene at the end as people the people in the huge studio fight scene at the end were running out into the streets, including Heady. Hedley Lamar. I never knew this. They'd closed off that street by the studios for filming that scene and some old guy in a cardigan sweater was moved down the road from the filming. While they were filming it, this non-extra showed back up on the corner extremely perplexed with what was going on around him. Brooks decided they had to keep him in that scene so they had to go find the guy, sign him up and pay him as an extra! That was a subtle point and more brilliance for the moment. I just wish the movies I've been in were as much fun as this one continues to be!
