Fate/Stay Night UBW Abridged - Ep5: Combat High

For this episode's pin, a silly clarification: Archer isn't Archer from the DEEN anime/Fate path, nor is he Shirou from the DEEN anime/Fate path specifically. Archer's canon backstory as revealed by Nasu is almost identical to the Fate route, but without him ever having saved Saber. Nasu mentioned there were minor differences so one assumes effectively everything major was the same (including knowing that Rider had a pegasus and Bellerephon and was killed by Excalibur but not who she was, having not met Sasaki at all, knowing almost nothing about Caster's actual abilities, thinking Shirou would be romantically entangled with Saber, what Berserker seemed to be capable of, etc). We use the DEEN footage because it's the best approximation of the Fate path in visual form (and we did include shots of Archer fighting Berserker in his "flashback" when he was remembering Berserker, but that was more a stylistic choice meant to point at him remembering that "he" dies to Berserker if they fight). Archer's assumptions and conclusions in this abridged anime are based on information Shirou would have had available to him after the Fate path. This isn't a correction to anything, it just seems like every episode we leave a little "production notes" pin at this point. Wouldn't want to break the pattern. (Also yes, we've always known Kazuki Yamashiro's name is Souichirou Kuzuki. That's not an error.)

Thanks guys. It cleared it up to me because I really thought at first that it was more based off the Deen's route so my apologies for that as I've been commenting around. I do have a question, in the "Archer Route" you guys based off for this Archer since the canon is up in the air about a lot of the finer details of the route, there's a mention of Kuzuki in today's episode implying Shirou-Archer learned who was the master of Caster which I don't remember the VN's Fate route revealing. Is that one of the things you guys wanted to add and attach personally based off the Deen addition or did I miss a detail somewhere among the plethora of Beast Lair forum topics I haven't touched?

After Caster dies Kuzuki also vanishes. They knew he stayed at Ryudo temple, and assuredly there would later be a report about him being found murdered at the temple. Even if it went unreported it's not a stretch to imagine that Shirou would later link Kuzuki to Caster given that she points out that Gilgamesh killed her master and Assassin. It's an assumption on our part, but one based on Archer's general deductive reasoning.

@@chukyuniqul Actually, he _can be_ pretty murderous if you, on top of rubbing him the wrong way, also betrays him in any form. One flaw of his is that, like almost every true Servant save the Archer and Berserker Classes, Lancer *will* obey his Master's commands even if he disagrees with them. HOWEVER, he _does_ seem to be the kind to draw a line at some point, similar to Saber. So I'd have to wonder how long it would take for Shinji to have to use a Command Spell to force him to do a specific thing that Lancer dislikes. At the worst case scenario, Lancer might feel betrayed and kill Shinji even if he's his own Master. Really, on the _BEST_ of _BEST_ scenarios possible, Lancer might try to coach Shinji a little and teach him to be a somewhat better person. (he's one heck of a bro, that crazy Irishman) But I don't see much chemestry developing between them, given how Shinji is such a deluded coward and, when he's not being that, he's fully drowning in his own self-loathing for being a complete failure as a Magus AND as a Master. Lancer admires people who are gutsy, like Bazett, Shirou and Rin. Folks who try their very best no matter the odds and are not afraid to say what's trully on their minds. Shinji is the complete opposite of that, so I'm not sure how he would rub off on Lancer.

So I wanted to point out a small writing error. In a previous episode, before attacking, Archer shouts out "Prepare to feel the unbridled wrath of Shirou Emiya!". I know he was just repeating what he heard Shirou say earlier, and was probably implying something like "I am fighting on Shirou's behalf", but it kind of sounds like Archer is implying that he *is* Shirou, which is clearly impossible.

Their bodies are being used as prana batteries (like in the Matrix but more painful) in the basement of the Church. Shirou dodged this fate by Kiritsugu using magic to bypass the law and adopt him instantly. The is the reason why Shirou gets this creepy feeling in the Church because of all the suffering that goes on inside it.
