BLEACH: How Kubo Built A Broken World

This video was pretty experimental, tried to do something different & I'm not completely satisfied with how it came out but it was a very fun experience. This isn't as intensely edited as my usual videos, the script isn't as tight & a little more off-the-cuff, free-flowy. It's a deep dive, into several rabbit holes, that doesn't come together as well as I'd have liked it to. I have a lot of ideas like this, a lot of interesting connections & observations that I find fascinating to discuss. Like I said, very fun experience, even if the videos aren't entirely conclusive. I just found two instances of this and there may be a few more. The first is in Grimmjow's backstory, the explanation of Menos evolution. And the second is the start of Turn Back the Pendulum.

I really liked it. This video reminded me how the Quincy are also an allegory for the Western influences on Japanese Culture and Societal Function. The smatterings of Christian fundamentalists had strength indiviudually, and were valued initially with their firearms trades, its only when they became strong enough t ocause rebellions, that they had to be pacified and then banned, except for a very small few, in an attempt to stop them gaining any more of a foothold. But a few hundred years later, the Americans started to impose their will in a progressively escalated way, until they had to destroy the illusion of the Emperor, at least on a functional level, before having to reassume those powers to maintain authority over the Japanese following the war. (Japan hasn't politically changed form the 50s). The difference between Yhwach and Urahara, is they both know your basic life skills and values are important, but one wants to break you down to those base levels, to manipulate, and the other wants you to accept survival skills have their purpose, sometimes, your trauma was survival that can be tapped into, somatically.

I'm interested in taking a deconstructionist style approach to looking at the world and the structures contained within it as they both give shape to that world while simultaneously are themselves shaped by that same world. The shinigami and the rest of soul society are so rigid and hierarchical and while the text seems to suggest that this kind of structure is good and natural, it almost immediately and continuously refutes this idea as the inherent injustice of this structure lies at the heart of nearly if not every existential threat that seems to keep manifesting itself as soon as the prior impending end of the world is stopped somehow. You can extend this train of thought out to cover the entirety of the world by comparing the primordial and current state of the world. As you said, Kubo is most fluent in the language of contrast, so I'm sure that by examining these kind of opposites that there is still so much to be discovered in Bleach

I have one major disagreement with your analysis, and it's about the nature of Shinigami spiritual power. You say it's them attempting to convince themselves of their connection to Reio and imitate his true children, the Quincy and Fullbringers, by producing effects from their own konpaku in ways that simulate the manipulation of external reishi, but I think the nature of Shinigami deriving power from within their konpaku as opposed to manipulating external reishi is merely a reflection of the ideological biases of their precursors, the 5 Founders and Ichibei. The founders created a cycle much like the Buddhist samsāra, where much emphasis is placed on internal contemplation and reflection to free oneself from the cycle and potentially unlock your own Buddha nature. The process of creating and refining a Zanpakuto operates on the same logic, and even kido is dependent on attunement with one's own soul. They are simply manipulating the reishi from within to produce power as compared to Quincy or Fullbringers, who manipulate it from without, and neither way of drawing out power is more or less real than the other.

I have something interesting to talk about. Did you notice that Uryu is the only Quincy to use hold a bow with his right hand? I had a discussion about this a while ago and noticed something crazy. The person I was talking with assumed that this meant Uryu being the Antithesis to Yhwach, however Yhwach does not use bows with right nor left hand. He summons the Sankt Bogen above himself, in the middle. He did this against Yamamoto and against Ichibei. But every other Quincy - Ryuken (who genetically is like Uryu), Bazz B, Bambies... uses their bows with their left hand. Including the Left Arm of the Soul King itself. Kubo actually made Pernida (the left arm) a quincy instead of Mimihagi (the right arm) so that Uryu can be the only Quincy to use a bow with his right hand. So how I perceive it is that Yhwach is like both Uryu and all the other Quincies together, and Uryu is the antithesis to every other Quincy born from Yhwach or conceptually working under him as a Quincy.

Masaki and Bazz B hold their bow with right arm and there is probably other exemple. While this theory is interesting I think it is just being realistic (less left handed people in the world so less people holding bow in right hand and shoot with left hand)

It's interesting that Haschwalth barely uses a bow and arrow (of course, given how he used to be in the past)- while Yhwach fires it from above and towards the middle of his body, and the remaining Quincies use their left or right hand, prominently Uryu with his right hand. Jugram is supposed to be the role model Quincy, the Grandmaster, yet differs from the them in more ways than one. Pretty fascinating that his schrift is called the 'Balance'... while the Shinigami are known as the 'balancers' of the world. He feels antithetical to the Quincy as much Uryu in a lot of ways, even though he's the other half of the Quincy King.

@@wyper3468 I believe the purest Quincy would be Lille Barro, not Jugram, and his left eye signifies the power Yhwach bestowed upon him. Although, he does hold his spiritual weapon in his right hand and pulls the trigger with his left. Then again, much like Yhwach, in his true form, he can shoot from anywhere he wants. Gremmy also can just shoot from anywhere with both hands in his pocket. Also, Yhwach could wield dual blades in his battle against Ichigo so he’s ambidextrous as well. While I don’t think the right hand stance Uryu has is anything special, It is interesting to think about.

One correction I'd like to make is that spiritual pressure isn't a result of external spiritual energy. It is the result of reishi density. Shunsui explains this in the New Breaths From Hell one-shot chapter. The denser your reishi particles, the bigger and heavier your spiritual pressure. That's why it affects physical properties and acts like a gravitational field. Regarding the primordial hollows, I think the only difference between them and the current hollows are how they are born. The way I understand it, based on how CFYOW describes it, is that Hollowfication was little more than a sickness and part of the normal cycle of reishi. Once enough negative emotions built up, they would hollowfi, and eventually, as per the stagnent nature of that world, those feelings would pass, and the person would revert back to normal. Think of it like a werewolf situation. The apocalypse that gave rise to the Soul King was a result of sickness getting out of hand.

Reiryoku not only serves as "fuel". It also increases the physical performance of the spiritual body (Reitai), as Urahara says before Ichigo starts training in the early chapters. Ichigo can move even better than his physical body when he has more reiryoku, as Byakuya pierces Ichigo's hakusui and saketsu without Ichigo even seeing it. After training, Ichigo can keep up with Byakuya's speed without having to use the bankai. But not every reitai can withstand the amount of reiryoku as it was with Gremmy, he tried to become as strong as Zaraki, but his body could not withstand it and Gremmy said that only Zaraki's body can withstand such an incredible flow of power.Also according to Urahara reiryoku increases from the previous indicator in cases where the user experiences a "Crisis" in the form of being close to death in battle. This can also be negative, as if you release more power than you can handle, the example of Bankai Zaraki when Yachiru released more power and Ken's arm was ripped off. Other kapyans, when their swords are released, the reishi stored in them will flow and form something new like Captain Mayuri's Ashisogi Jizo, but Kenpachi's bankai strengthens his body like Arankar's Ressurexion changing their bodies (I wouldn't be surprised after Yachiru's show of emptiness that Ken isn't just a shinigami). But it's not just the physical transformation that gives the body enhancement, it's also covering the reatsu. Ichigo's Bankai is not only a sword, but also a garment that speeds him up. Yoruichi's cat-like covering acts similarly. Even the Quincy absorb the surrounding reishi and subdue it to become armor that increases their speed and strength Sternriterr N Robert in the battle with Byakuya/Kioraku. Yoruichi/Soi Fon's method is of course different from the Quincy's because their Shunko is Kido and originates from within while the Quincy's takes energy from the outside, which makes the difference that a reitai shinigami with an impressive supply of reiryoku will be much stronger, faster, etc. than the Quincy. But they make up for it with Blut/Artery and absorbing external reishi. At this point for 1,000 years the Shinigami/Quincy have lived in peace, while Hueco Mundo has always lived by the jungle rule of either you or you, so for the current Goethei 13 threat in the form of Vasto Lords is a disaster requiring multiple captains to win. Kubo uses this at his advantage by keeping the ambiguity and mystery of information and characters, if youve watch the 5hr vid of his a phrase he constantly use during SS arc is "nothing is as it seems" how the actions and words of the characters dont make sense or correlate to one another. Like it requires some critical thinking rather then being told by a narrator whats going on, it also makes the characters feel alive as we only know what the characters at the time know. But yes just praising Kubo too 😊

Also he probably just had no real opportunity to use Bringer Light and other Fullbringer abilities so ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯ But him originally just having Getsuga Tensho makes sense considering he knew very little about himself too.

Not sure if this was mentioned elsewhere but, I realized during your comparisons of Shinigami and Hollows and Fullbringers/Quincies is that Ichigo developed his powers by following this same progression. Ichigo first had to become a Shinigami to develop his hollow/visored powers. After losing his Shinigami abilities, Ichigo had to become a fullbringer to eventually get to his Quincy abilities. That last one may be a stretch, and the whole idea may be better rationalized as a thematic progression rather than a power requirement. Regardless, pattern is still there, whether literary or in-universe.

17:29 I believe the hollows are not part of the SK design, but more like the natural path of souls, like souls are supposed to eventually become hollows, eat each other, become menos, one soul take control of the gillian, become adjuchas, vasto lord and eventually natural arrancar, with arrancar themselves being the natural counterbalance to one gillian getting too fat. and I belive that is exactly what the SK is, an arrancar, the very first arrancar who ascended to defeat the primordial menos, a perfect arrancar without mask and without hole, arrancar are hollows that regain their hearts and thus ascend, gillians are hollows that are completely lost in contrast. Also Soul Reapers essentially are distinct from your average Plus because of the zanpakuto and what is the sauchi imitating ? hollows. Menos and arrancar to be exact. So shinigami powers are based on hollow powers, just attained trough a different method. IMO a shinigami and arrancar are the same thing in the same sense as a quincy and a fullbringer being the same thing.

Essentially hollows are the only ones that naturally form into compact collection of souls in their own, and naturally create existences with powers, the arrancar, existences that regain their humanity and can combat the feral gillians and adjuchas.

this has to be my favourite bleach related video of all time. I love the way you explained every race and how it is connected and what makes it unique. What I really found interesting is when you said that the quincies were the true "children" of the soul king and not the shinigamis. I also liked the way that you explained that all of the broken abilities the quincies have at the end of the day is just reishi manipulation and that the soul reapers try to imitate the quincie's abilities through their zanpakutos. Soul reapers through their own zanpakutos theoretically have the ability to do anything as long as that is what their heart desires, we have characters like hisagi whose bankai is the manifestation of the world that ywach always wanted or azashiro whose bankai reminds of aura's fullbring, toshiro who in his perfected state can freeze and make powerless literal concepts and possibly ichigo's true bankai that can shatter fate. I believe that the soul reapers as to not only rely on their zanpakutos as way of attack and defense took inspiration of how the quincies form their bows and decided to use their own manipulation of reiatsu which eventually led to the creation of kido and later on kaido.

I've been rough drafting my own Bleach fanfic, which I plan to make very complex, taking everything about the world(s) into account. Personally, I think that the Plus to Hollow cycle might predate the current world, especially since Humans and Hollows, even in the Primordial World, were portrayed as opposite, yet linked. Additionally, I think it's worth noting that the current world was built on-top of/out of the primordial world, and the latter still exists underneath our world. Finally, I personally hc that the Quincy, and Ywach specifically, are children of the Soul King's will possibly designed to exact revenge on the Shinigami, possibly to give power to others, and maybe even to prepare the ground for Ichigo.

the thing is "humans aren't a thing in the primordial world". Its's more so that humans and Konpaku are basically one single entity. the one wierd thing that supporst that the Hollows in the news world aren't exactlt the same thing as primordial hollows is that, how come that for one individual to be classified as a "SOUL king candidate needs to have some Hollow reishii in their dna. which is wierd since that implies Hollow powers is in some way tied to the Soul King and that contradicts that the "Soul King himself is a being that is basically created to be "ANTI-HOLLOW". the plausible explanation for this is that the Hollows we see now is different from the Primordial hollows that Soul King was meant to eradicate.

I don't think the Hollows of the current world are technically all that different from those of the primordial world because there might be some Hollows like Barragan or even Ulquiorra who predate the current world, and because it seems the primordial world did have some feedback loop in which the deaths of Pluses lead to more Hollows. The current world just refined and altered it into a cycle. As for the Soul King part, I don't think the Soul King candidate needing Hollow reishi/power is about being exactly like the Soul King, but rather transcending the boundaries between races like Reio did.

@@MrGksarathy Ulquiorra doesn't predate the world, since he still spawned in somewhere in "Hueco Mundo" meaning the world already was split at that point thus Ulquiorra did not exist in the primordial times. , from the earliest Barragan was depicted to exist which is in CFYOW when the first Zanpakuto was technically created. He was still in Hueco Mundo. Barragan is probablyore so as old as Genryusai Yamamoto. Which is a character, though old, is still only ever shown to have existed when the worlds was already had been split.

36:20 thoughts before i complete the video Hogyoku (breakdown sphere) could indeed have the ability to break down the SoulKing's constructed 3-way world, therefore being able manifest those abnormalities. So, it is something that breaks the boundary and the natural laws placed on such a world, it's beyond reason - reason being the current world. Maybe it being that amalgamation could be something that is intrinsically tied a concept originating from the first, primordial world. A greater will (progress-stagnation, balance-chaos) also governed the primordial world with opposing forces, and the world itself gave them form: chaos/progress(primordial Menos) and balance/stagnation (Soul King). For example, Aizen used the hogyoku, an amalgamation (like the primordial menos is?) to become the Soul King, however, that concept in itself is in complete opposition to what the

A slight correction is that Shnigami dont have to dilute themself to acquire their power. Yamayoto can literally manifest fire with Ryujin-yakka, Hitsugaya and Rukia can literally make ice, the context of that statement with Yamayotos bankai is that at that temperature no flame would be visible. As for how the Quincy existed before Yhwach and yet he is also their progenitor/father. The best example is Lucian from the Underworld movies. He was the first werewolf that could take the form of a human, and thus he became the first Lycan and the progenitor of the Lycan race, despite the fact that werewolves had existed for hundreds of years before his own birth. It’s something like that with Yhwach, Quincy had existed before his birth but their abilities, techniques and power weren’t as evolved until his holy birth. Another great example is of course Jesus Christ himself, as before his birth, there existed religions that worshipped God such as Judaism but only after his birth and first death was Christianity borne. In the Bleach sense, imagine if Aizen had succeeded in usurping the throne and his first act as god was to use the Hogyoku to forcefully evolve all Shinigami into transcendental beings like Dangai Ichigo. He would in that sense, become the progenitor of all Shinigami from that point on to the foreseeable ends of time despite other Shinigami clearly being older than him. If Kasui is a natural born hybrid like Ichigo is, then 10,000 years to come, there would be a whole new race of natural born hybrids just like Ichigo thus making him the progenitor to whatever they are called at that time.

My theory on the Soul King, specifically why he allowed himself to be sealed and mutilated, has to do with Hell. We know that Hell existed separately from the rest of the primordial world and that there is a warden within. I believe that this warden is a representation of the devil in the same way Yhwach is a representation of Jesus. Based on rules of power cliffing, this waren should be more powerful than Yhwach, placing him/her in the same tier of power as the Soul King himself. So, the Soul King needed an answer to the power, something stronger than the warden or himself. Remember, the Soul King was everything except for Hollow, because he was born as the antithesis to Hollows. But, we now have Ichigo and Hikone, two characters that essentially have the same genetic makeup as the Soul King with the addition of Hollow power as well. I believe that the Soul King allowed himself to be sealed to place a temporary 'lid' on Hell until we reached the point where we have characters capable of dealing with the warden running around.

the video gave a plausible interpretation that the "current hollows" are different from the "primordial hollow(which the video basically implies the primordial hollows may be the are the ones we saw in the hell chapter". the one fact that makes me believes the "current hollows are different from the primordial ones is the fact that to be a soul king candidate you basically also need to have some Hollow reishi dna. Which implies the Soul King is in some way still related to hollows or at least with the current world's hollows. With the infos available Primordial hollows just suddenly existed like the soul king, meanwhile the current world hollows are basically Human Plus that got hollowfied. In short the current hollows are more of regular souls that underwent mutation and ended up looking really similar to the Primordial Hollows. That is how I interpret it as for now,

I’d argue the Hollows reflect the power of the heart since their masks are formed from the “heart” they lost. Klub Outside confirmed that the zanpakuto of an arrancar is formed from the remnants of the mask they tore off as well. (with their hollow power sealed inside the newly formed sword) Fullbring, needing hollow power as a catalyst to form, is an equal representation and a derivative at the same time.

While this is a small bit of information, it was confirmed in a Klub Outside question (Question 281) that Ywhach can technically "see" the letter engravings on each Quincy, even before bestowing doing the whole blood ritual thing. So the Sternritter could also just be made of people who just so happened to have very specific latent abilities that Yhwach could activate and exploit when it came time for the second war. It would also make sense why people like Nianzol Weizol were even allowed on the mission to the Soul Palace. No hate on the guy, but if it weren't for that specific ability that Yhwach saw and thought of exploiting, there would've been no chance Nianzol would've been chosen. This is also a big parallel between the Quincy and Shinigami, as Shinigami of course have the Asauchi which become their Zanpakuto while Quincy have the latent Schrift ability. This sounds like hella wishful thinking, but I pray to Reio that Kubo allows the Quincy to evolve a bit more and can access their Schrift abilities independently and without the aid of Yhwach. Shingami can do with, Fullbringers can, Arrancar can, but the Quincy were straight up robbed. Now that 10 years have passed in the story, maybe he can give the Quincy something extra now, perhaps using what they've learned from the war to develop independent Schrift development, and even accessing Vollstandig in due time as well, but that’s just me trying to see the Quincy catch a W WITHOUT looking like absolute menaces. Edit: YOU MENTIONED IT RIGHT SMACK DAB AT THE END OF THE DAD GUM VIDEO! Anyway, I still hope the Quincy are able to develop the Schrift abilities independently now that 10 years have passed in the Bleach story.

Pretty sure it's implied the quincy's could potentially awaken their powers (their schrift as we saw in TYBW) even without help from Yhwach, Pernida and Gerard had their powers before they joined, while the twins showed a weaker part of their abilities since childhood, you could make an argument for Jugram being the same, Lille even says that the Aushwahlen didn't transfer power as much as it gives a shortcut to what the person can actually do and Bazz was still using his schrift after his power was "stolen".

I was like on my way home today as I heard this like an podcast, while I was in train/bus. I was thinking a lot about how we humans get inspiration from influences of other things/living beeings we feel connected with. And how our identy truly leads to a vision or a dream we have, that we want to make real. Here are my thoughts: I think we are like constantly evolving with the influences we get, if the influences are good we become a more mature trancended version of our former self, with every trancendce we have. Wit every transendence we get a higher more advanced view over us as character and our identity and how and why we are like we are. Emotionions or just living like you life without thinking about something, is like the $ we exchange under each other. And we take influence about each other with these emotions always. And if we feel something which feels like an connection with ourselves our identity, we mostly understand ourselves better as well after that. The more we understand ourselves or our vision, the less we get influenced from things if we dont want it so. The more I think about this, the more I come to a state of complete calmness andconnection with my overworld, its a really uncomparable feeling. Maybe you have something to think or share about this :) PS: God I love bleach there is no other anime who can give me intersting and inspiring philosophical thoughts like this :)

Actually, regular konpaku "won't age"(the once that was dead human that got konsoed to soul society.. A konpaku which has a significant amount of Reiatsu will experience hunger, aging (though to a varied degree). i assume basically the konpaku's that can be a shinigami are the ones that could also actually reproduce and becomes a permanent resident of soul society. (E.g. they won't be part of the regualr konpakus that will evntually be reincarnated as human once they passed on at soul society) This bit I think is another good aspect that Bleach can still show. Since we already had examples of how "Humans can go to Soul Society how himan souls turn hollow, but we haven't seen how a konsoed konpaku can be reincarnated as a human)

Shinigami is actually a 'job'. Those with high spiritual pressure enters the Shinigami Academy in order to qualify as an actual shinigami, and each of them are given an asauchi which they need to master in order to awaken their own zanpakuto. Hence, not all beings/souls with high spiritual pressure are considered shinigami.

You mentioning how a bunch of stuff in the series comes about from merging a bunch of souls together made me realize that Yhwach is technically a being made by merging a bunch of souls together and so are Ichigo and Aizen all three of which are considered the closest people to being the soul king. So what if the soul king isn't just a singular entity but several entities combined who came about due to the needs of the universe. Considering that so many of the SK body parts end up gaining their own will this may be the case. What if these body parts gained their own will not because of the power of the SK but because the merger of the entities was imperfect and volatile. If the goal of the SK was to create a world like the one of current bleach then having a being that doesn't have perfect control over themselves as the linch pin would be detrimental to said world. So what if the SK allowed themselves to be sealed and mutilated to stabilize himself as a linch pin but also because he knew this would set off the events of Bleach. He knew that a new being like himself would be born but unlike him this being would be stable and would be able to serve as a protector to the world and so Ichigo came about. He also knew that another being almost like himself but not quite would be born and this one would be capable of not only pushing the world to progress but also become a much more stable linch pin for the world without the dangers of different body parts running rampant and so Yhwach came about. That just leaves Aizen and I fully think the Aizen and everyone else in the story was just collateral for Yhwach and Ichigo to take their rightful place and foreseen by the SK.

I noticed something. Its pretty arrogant for ichibe to assume that the reio saw no future where it was avoidable no matter how he struggled. If the reio wanted to, he could have defeated the 5 royal families and ichibe with no effort. Its far more likely that reio saw that all the futures where he killed them were worse than ones where he struggled, and the absolute best future was the one where he didnt resist at all. The reio loves and protects all of creation. That is his ultimate will and purpose. If sacrificing himself was what led to the best version of reality, then its pretty clear that he would do it with no hesitation. Also the way these beings are just kinda "spawning" into creation tells me they are likely higher dimensional in nature. I mean base reio with Almighty is inherently 4D due to the ability to effect the timeline. Who can say if the actual soul king is so far beyond comprehension that the body we think of contained like.00001 % of his total being and his actual self is living completely unaffected by the original sin. What if the body we know as reio is like a glove he wears, so discarding it to be sacrificed so these little pitiful soul creatures can hold their world together is nothing to him. Like throwing out an old pair of socks that end up in a landfill and becoming a home to an ecosystem of fungi or bacteria.

A couple of things. Is the Soul King the universe itself? The wording says that the Soul king was created as a response by the universe to stagnation. So does this mean that there is technically a single being above the Soul King, or is the Soul King the universe personified. With the idea of many souls being merged, maybe it's a reference? to the single primodial hollow, that likely would have been the most powerful being (aside from the Soul King?) that would have existed. With many souls merging, the resulting thing would becoming closer to a primodial and maybe "more pwoerful" state. Ywach may be the son of the soul king, but if each "race" is a fragment of the Soul King, and Ichigo posesses aspects of ALL of them, then that would make Ichigo literally a second Soul King. Not simply someone with the title of the Soul King, or someone with an immense amount of power, but an individual that's literally the same "species" as the Soul king.

In the TYBW anime we see ywhbach and ichibei 1000yrs ago. Ywhbach goals wad t PROTECT his people at any cost..he can FEEL there pain once there Reaistu comes back to him.. For all being made of the same substance it's fairly ironic that all express disdainful prejudices towards humans. In CFYOW Tokinada is absolutely gleeful at the prospect of his plan in exposing the Spirit worlds to humans succeeding based on the fact that humans will fearfully unleash their destructive military technology against such beings, showing this prejudice is badly mistaken while also satisfying his psychopathy. I really wish Kubo had just plainly stated that Souls are constituted in a similar way to human bodies but age much slower. Every piece of anime for the most part dont have spirits that can bleed or "die" or live for 130+ years but look like a 13 year old (Hitsugaya). I dislike the type of "writing the story" for the author, which to be fair, we arent really. But having it spelled out a little bit really allows me to appreciate the world building more, rather than making up my own fanfic.
