From Mattingly to Roberts to Darvish to Kershaw to Seager to Turner…etc, the actors can change but the organizational philosophy and cultural support structure of said philosophy has not changed…the only logical explanation for these mind boggling October results, after highly successful regular seasons, is that the front office philosophy is not one that can win in the playoffs (or World Series for that matter). Proof is in the pudding…multiple early playoff exits (in infamous fashions on many occasions) and only 1 asterisk World Series in 11 years to show for it. Front office, their philosophy and their organizational structure to support that philosophy has to go! Period!

@davidmoorhead yeah because they aren’t built to make it through a 162 game season and then go win a World Series.. it’s like taking a sprinter and a distance runner and having them race in the 100m. 162 game seasons provide a much larger sample size to determine what teams are truly good vs teams that get hot for a month and a half. Look at 2019, the Nationals started 19-31 and 27-33 through the first 60 games but won the World Series. That record wouldn’t have landed them a playoff spot in 2020. It would be one thing if the dodgers had won a title outside of 2020 in the last 10 years. They always collapse around game 170 or so and it just happened yet again. Did they have to make it to 170 games in 2020, no.

Not gonna call him an iron man but overall he’s been pretty healthy and the injuries came from the pitching side of things because of the Angels mismanagement. I think Kershaw getting shelled in gm1 completely rattled the Dodgers and shattered their confidence. There wasn't a single drop of passion or urgency in the dugout the entire series. The Dodgers are inside their own heads now...kinda like the Maple Leafs and their streak of 1st round exits. Nothing wrong with the playoff format, rather when you've got a 15gm lead, and you're not playing "do or die" baseball for a month, it has an effect.

The Dodgers turned to hitting over pitching, specifically hitting homers. They have an offense that can win 100 games in the regular season facing a list of #3-5 pitchers on any staff. LA, like the Giants and A’s, are built using too much analytics which works over a large sample size, but can be irrelevant in a short post season series. Bochy took the Giants to 3 titles in 5 years managing imperfect teams through tough post season series, and he was never a big winner during the regular season. He is 50/50 in games at SF

DBacks are made heavily using analytics as well; the difference is their focus is on developing young athletes within the farm system and making their transition to MLB as smooth as possible with comprehensive gameplanning. Most of the strategy is done by guys with a high level of understanding of the game, and the players trust those plans. DBacks identity throughout their history has been consistently built upon fundamentally sound defense (especially in the OF), which is a necessity when you're playing in the California stadiums (with that marine layer that has a tendency to kill flyballs) and wonky offensive ballparks like Chase and Coors. The difference now is that they're more efficiently developing hitters, and they have one of the best pitching coaches in the game (Strom) to go along with one of the best baserunning coaches in the game (McKay, who is also a phenomenal OF coach).

As interesting as it is to explore this idea of the new playoff format and the higher seeds' extended time off affecting their rhythm and performance, I'm afraid I just don't see it. The Astros didn't skip a beat. Granted, clearly their management is on another level-there's a reason they're moving onto their 7th consecutive ALCS-but their players still showed up in a big way, especially guys like Yordan Alvarez. No rust there. Atlanta might be on the brink, but they at least showed fight and timely hitting in Game 2, and still have a chance to again tonight. With Baltimore, we could argue they were ahead of schedule, and that their inexperience was the main reason for their early exit, but even still they had great pitching in their Game 1 loss and great hitting in their Game 2 loss. I don't think the Dodgers or their fans can seriously claim their week off was the cause of this collapse.

I am so sad for the former Brooklynites. I think they can improve next year by buying more players like Betts & Freeman. Drop 300 or 400 million more bucks and you will be in good shape.
