Will this block objects behind the transparent object? I have been struggling to figure that out to make it work like Cycles Shadow catcher

No it can't sadly. Due to the transparency you have to figure out how to use occlusion objects as a mask. So they need to appear on a different layer(collection). I'll have a look at it also.

Yeah just figured that out and was thing the same thing. I was thinking of a way to make an object shaped hole in the image with the rest transparent and put it back over the top of the entire render.

@@mikealbert728 Answer is "View Layers", unfortunately you can't just render the alpha for the foreground layer but you can use just the alpha (inverted) to mask the background layer ;-)
