Important update : 1) if your colors look weird, in the layers panel you'll need to uncheck "use lights" at the bottom of the layers list, for each layer, just under the blend mode and opacity. This option is used if you have lights sources close to your drawing, to make it affect the color. 2) if your canvas is hidden behind the cube, dont worry you will see in the next step how to move it. For now, just hide the cube with the eye icon in the outliner 3) if you finished this tutorial, please check my update to go further in my other video kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZKsd4dulM9jgrM 4) If your paint bucket doesnt work, it probably has the intermediary gap auto-fill. It means that it works only two clicks. After the first click you can adjust the gaps with the mouse wheel, and then click a second time to paint 5)At the drawing introduction, if the canvas grid is hidden under the cube for your blender version, you can temporarily hide the cube in the outliner in top right list, by clicking on the eye icon for the cube

or generally turn pictures into objects in such a way that every pixel is a surface ? That must be what's happening when the picture is imported as a plane except the individual pixels aren't interactive until you subdivide the plane, while making sure the mapping remains correct ?

Heads up: If you are using Blender 2.83+ grease pencil is now affected by lighting, so if you are at the step where you add fill color to the scene and it looks off that is why. To people saying "use empties instead of boxes for the 3D cursor" ... The problem with the empties is that you need to leave your drawing tool, switch to object mode, then select the empty, then press shift+S, put 3D cursor to selected, go back to the greasepencil object, switch to draw mode.... And continue to draw. With the boxes, while you draw, you just press shift + Right click on them, and don't even need to leave the drawing tool :-). As an illustrator, i know that leaving the pen just to reposition a cursor is very bad for the creation workflow... So with this technique, you just need to place the boxes once for all
@Giga_Hood4 жыл бұрын
Also if for those who don't know, if you press N you open up a side bar menu, in one of these menus you can adjust the XYZ co-ordinates of the 3D cursor so if you set everything to 0 the 3D cursor will move back to world origin. TLDR: press N to open a side menu, find the 3D cursor setting, hover over them and press BACKSPACE/set everything to 0. There your 3D cursor is now back to default.

Not only do you explain how to do everything and exactly WHY it works that way, but you also mention what to look out for and possible mistakes you could make in the process. I've been a fan of your work for some time now and went into this basically expecting to be overwhelmed by how difficult what you do is (like with... a lot of blender tutorials lmao). In the end I managed to not only understand exactly how everything comes together, but also learned something i could use to incorporate into my own art (the "draw on shape" tip in particular, even though it wasn't even needed here). Thank you so much for making this amazing tutorial, I imagine this took a heck of a lot of time to assemble.

Note for those who are using Blender 2.83+. If your colors are too dark and changing color managment does not help. Uncheck "Use Lights" on every layer in your Grease Pencil Layers list. Second note: If you can't see your canvas (that square grid thingy in middle) even when it is turned "on" it is possible that color of background match color of your canvas. To change it go to that panel where you have grease pencil layers, then Viewport Display > Canvas and change color :) Third note: in Blender 2.83+ for fill you can use vertex paint which is faster but using materials have some benefits. For example you can quickly change colors in every layer.

This is a great tutorial. A little tip, I'm not sure if it's the same in grease pencil but in every other tool that uses a brush (especially sculpting), the hot key F will allow you to resize the brush without having to adjust the slider. I forget but i think shift F allows you to adjust the opacity/hardness of the brush. Also if you press the TAB key it's a shortcut to change modes (object mode, drawing mode, sculpting mode, etc.), a littl wheel will appear and you can move your mouse and click yo change modes, if you're quick it will change to the mod3 you move your cursor to if it's done quickly. Also if you press Z you can switch between the views (render view, wite frame, texture preview, etc.) so you don't have to click in the top right. I'm sure you probably knew these but if you didn't here they are and if you dod well i hope this helps someone in the comments ^-^.

For the weel you actually have to press ctrl + tab, but yes, thats very useful! (Edit: also, the "if you do it quickly" happens when you move your mouse whilst still holding down the key (key or tab). The mode will change as soon as you let go of the key.)

What's amazing about blender is that it's base is a 3D software, meaning you can model the box in 3d and just draw over it in any rotation and angle. Truly amazing for a free software

Anybody knows why when I click "show overlays" and then I click to see the canvas it's overlayed by the cube? I mean the canvas is not in "x ray" mode. How can I solve this?

Repost: Maybe might help for the canvas issue in 2.83. Grease Pencil Object Selected-> Object Data Properties (Green icon) -> Vieport Display -> Canvas -> Increase the scale. This doesn't solve the issue but at least you can change the size and the color.

@dilem koren Hi, i saw that part, but unfortunarly it did not solve the issue.
@alsojanice4 жыл бұрын
not sure if this solves the problem for you - i'm using 2.9 and there is a little "Canvas X-ray" icon on the right side of the "Canvas" option (where he clicked canvas). if you click that, it will make the canvas more visible like it is in the video.

Hi, really like the tutorial, but I have a problem with the canvas, when I add the canvas they don’t really appear. It’s like the cube it’s solid enough to not let show the canvas line. Hope you can help me with this.

it happened to me once, i dont remember how i solved it.. First you must be sure that you're not on "surface" mode in the top rule. And then, for me, i think i switched the preview modes in the top right corner of the viewport, or went back to other modes like sculpt or object, the back to draw mode...

Hey I'm watching the tutorial and following along, I'm at the part where you enable the canvas. The issue I am facing is that the default cube in my scene blocks the canvas; I can move or delete the cube and then the canvas is visible, but I'd like to know why this is happening. Thank you!

Thanks for the tutorial! Honestly, till I tried it myself, I didn't think it was possible to properly use blender for 2d. I just have a small problem (and I've seen several other people with the same issue). In Blender 2.83 my straw gets overlapped by the box in certain camera positions. I opened the same file in 2.82 and the problem vanished. I -would- use the old version, but I can't get my pressure sensitivity working in it :/
@razeezar3 жыл бұрын
I am using Blender 2.93 and am also having the same issues with this overlap 'flicker' effect between the box and the straw as I move / pan the view port (or camera) around. Both the straw and box are in '2D Layers' Stroke depth order as per this tutorial. As a test, I created an additional simple circle shape within the 'box' object / 'side float lines' as the active layer (followed by 'side float colors' to fill with a color). In case it is relevant, I created this on the same plane / X position as the side floating shapes, but around the same Z and Y position as the straw. Next, in edit mode, I selected all the points for line and fill of this extra shape, and pressed 'P' and separated these strokes by selected points, making it a new separate Grease Pencil object. Interestingly, this newly separated object 'Box.001' properly Z sorts with the straw... But *only* with the straw! Not only is there no flicker, but they correctly overlap with each other depending on which one is closer to the cam / viewport. There seems to be no option to sort objects by priority in 2D layers, yet these two objects just work. However despite successfully 'Z-sorting' with each other, the straw and this test 'box.001' object still both have the flickering issue with the main juice box object itself. Strange.... So we know that correct Z-sorting is possible, but either there's a bug with Blender, or there is a particular set of circumstances in the hierarchy / object data which determine whether or not this undesired effect occurs.
