What would be some of it's use cases where it can replace alphas? I feel this can take blender's sculpting ability to the next level.

Yes it can replace alphas for sure. You can use it to make any custom shapes like eyes, horns or anything that is above surface level. Surface shapes being things such as skin imperfections
