if you end up with black on your low poly texture when baking: what fixed it for me was under the Selected To Active section, using the extrude setting as well as the Max Ray distance. extrusion at 3" and Max Ray Distance at 4" seems to work for me for a human character. watch out for inside legs and under arms, which can look wrong if these are wrong.

the crucial moment where you must select the objects in the correct order and make one active was rushed and unclear. It's the most important step. Dough!

Actually it's very simple. You always must select the target mesh/object at last. Whatever the tool you want to use.

what if your high poly model doesn't have a UV map?
@AhtshamShabir5 жыл бұрын
It still works. Most high poly meshes are from dynotopo sculpting. They never have UV map lol. Only low poly mesh should have UV map.
@mankurt25943 жыл бұрын
@@AhtshamShabir but doest low poly have to be unwrapped in particular way? because I can't have proper baking results following all the same steps. it is that my low and high poly are unwrapped differently. can it be the reason of the problem?
@AhtshamShabir3 жыл бұрын
@@mankurt2594 As far as I know. High poly doesn't have to be UV mapped and the way low poly is unwrapped should not have any effect on baking. Ray length sometimes causes glitches if rays from one side collide with rays from other sides. This often happens in edges or crease areas. Try tweaking ray length and other baking settings.

What is the difference between baking the displacement and baking the normals?
@EGYPTIANKING245 ай бұрын
Displacing a mesh means that you'll use an existing geometry in your mesh to paint details (shapes) on it. Normals though are a combination calculated light angles of the mesh normals to fake either small heights or depths, without adding any geometrical details to the mesh.
@saturn7_dev4 жыл бұрын
I don't understand why you need to bake the new texture. Why cant you just use the low poly model with the original high quality texture as is ? I have been doing that for a while now and still looks ok.....
@westingtyler1 Жыл бұрын
if their uvs line up perfectly, it works fine. in my case I have a high poly model and a low poly model with totally different uvs. doing a bake like this essentially lets you "re-arrange the uvs onto nicer islands". (a photogrammatry scan has a million scattered triangles on the texture map, for example, instead of clean paintable islands.)

How do you save the bake? Everytime i save and close blender and go back it gets undone.
@GamedevFred5 жыл бұрын
You need to go to the uv/image viewer and save the image to your drive. Or make the image a fake user by pressing the button with F on it.
@westingtyler1 Жыл бұрын
when hovering over the uv window in blender, the top will say Image* since it's unsaved. I then hit Alt+R and it saves the image itself. I think newer versions of blender will prompt you to save unsaved texture images upon closing blender.
