The UV Sphere has always been avoided in subdivision surface modelling because of the pinching which happens at the poles. I have a fix for that!
It takes ages to make these!! Please consider supporting me!

Your mention about discussing Industry Standards regarding normals in the future sounds interesting. Looking forward to that.

Yeah I think that information can be hard to find and it is so useful to know what limitations you have before you start. I'll do that one soon.

A little sad that these aren't industry-standard due to the normal tricks. But still a great and useful technique to know and I can't wait to see how you build on this!

Thank you Ed. I agree that it is a shame that this aspect of modelling was never standardised. Normals are really complicated under the hood so I understand it. But it is still a shame.

@Ian McGlasham You've clearly been doing this professionally for quite a while. I am a perma-amateur; I have a day job and I'm old; there simply aren't enough hours remaining for me to know it all. I want to model in Blender specifically to create gaming miniatures and 3D print them. What are some search words you'd recommend for me? I'd wager I can become competent if I focus on what I need.

Cheers Tony. It is really hard to find good resources on the internet as most people teaching here are self-taught and the community seems to perpetuate popular (and usually incorrect) methods rather than industry methods. A bit of a shame but something I am trying to help to fix! A lot of the terms that would be helpful to know are: "The Framework Mesh", "Topological flow", "Concave Polygons", "2-manifold constructs", "N-Poles", "E-poles", "Local Geometries", "Termination", "Boundary Loops", "Ridge Clusters", "Radial Connection reduction", "Linear connection reduction", "Panel Beating", "Cubic Averaging" and "Cubic Patches"!! There are a lot but these are the advanced basics on which most subdivision surface modelling tasks are based. You wont find much out there as these techniques do not seem to have filtered from the studios to the internet in any meaningful way for some reason. I am working on a website at the moment to try to help demisitfy a lot of professional modelling approaches. It is a long way from being completed but since you took the time to comment on my video, you can have a look before I finish and publish it (It will change a lot but you might get some useful bits and pieces from it.) - Take a look here: ianmcglasham.wixsite.com/subdivision

Hi Ian...great tutorial...but what if I want to model this same model to industry standard (no normal changes)..do you have a video that shows that workflow and with a Quad sphere?
@sudipto30
@sudipto30 2 жыл бұрын
Too good a tutorial, you looks modelling looks so simple and obvious.
@ianmcglasham
@ianmcglasham 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you sudipto. I think everyone has slowly complicated these simple tasks with unnecessary tools and the use of booleans. It's not that difficult once you weed out the techniques that don't help.

Bruh... you solved an issue I was struggling with for years... After being through graphic design and coming back to 3D, on one of my first task I had to approach a model based on a sphere and I remembered about that issue... I knew about different sphere but never found someone fixing the UV Sphere itself... I found you literally the same day I had to work on it, 3 days after you published the video... Thank you ❤️

Hi, as I understand it will not work with a hemisphere?
@ianmcglasham
@ianmcglasham Жыл бұрын
Hi Dominic. It will work with a hemisphere but you need an additional empty placed at the location of the full sphere's original location. This empty is then specified in the "Target" section of the "Normal Edit" modifier. This will work correctly. Cheers. Ian.

why not delete the poles and nearby rings, and replace them with a grid-fill? Then cast into a sphere. (Doing that effectively gives you a cube-sphere)

Why is that better than just deleting a bunch of faces and making a grid fill? I mean, it's not a 100% sphere at that point, but the change is miniscule...
