I work in a pub in a tourism heavy area. Examples of rudeness are basically small things like being loud and rude because the beer sizes are different here from the US, as well as differing within Aus. No need to be rude because you aren't in America anymore; just ask for an explanation in a low tone and Australians won't get annoyed. No other tourists have the problem of understanding that things are different in each country and that that's a good thing!?

the biggest thing that makes a lot of Americans stick out when they come to my corner of the world is that many believe they can simply bribe people. I just find it bizarre when they try to pay their way to the front of a queue. But queue etiquette seems to only apply here in the UK anyway :)

Alot of Americans do talk loudly in Europe. Most Americans won't blend in and purposely show their arrogance. But I also here that same arrogance from the Dutch.

The biggest problem is probably that the Americans are not used to being a guest in someone else's country, because they are only ever in their own. As a European you are very used to going abroad from a very young age. I've gone to France over a dozen times and although I'm not even close to fluent in French I've never had any trouble with getting around, even in the country side, where they speak absolutely not English at all. They'll love you for trying and will do everything to help.

Yeah I've gotta say as an Australian we rely on tourism so we get a lot of travelers. Americans can be very trying. All you need to do is keep a moderate tone of voice (for some reason Americans speak extremely loudly! People find it obnoxious) and respect the country you're in. Make an effort and people will definitely be helpful and friendly in return

I live in the UK, and when I travel I stick out like a sore thumb. I even walk like an American... and I'm fine with it, because I travel with currency and I buy kababs and wine and whatever else so I never find myself frowned upon. You try to speak a little French (I actually spoke more Arabic in France, again, kababs) or German or learn to say thank you in Polish and people generally like you.

That's because the majority of the voters voted for a policy in favor of "living wage". If a foreign company wants to establish themselves somewhere but they don't like the policies, they have the choice not to go there. It is as simple as that.... Almost all EU-countries have a "living wage" minimum and we like it that way. Most employers pay more anyway also unskilled workers...

They'll order a schooner and be obnoxious and annoyed because in Sydney that was something else. Americans are mostly good people I understand that; but why do you turn into monsters when you leave lol?

I live in Finland and no we are not part of russia and no Europe is not a country... In Jere Finland things are better then in america Jere teacher are just as importent then doctors... We do not live in iglues we have bug cityes that are just as bug as americans citys... :)

And just relax and enjoy the cultural differences rather than becoming irritated by them. The beauty of travel is the new experiences! In my experience when a European traveller has trouble with English here, they will be embarrassed and apologise over and over. I always assure them it's fine and serve them as best as I can, giving them an approximate drink that I think they want and even plucking the correct money from their wallet if needed. @flake- as do alot of fat people here in the u.s. hate themselves. however there is such an over abundance of foods, and processed foods here thats why its commonplace. europe isy ancestral homeland, however Europeans, and canadians assume too much aboit the average people in the u.s.

I worked in Mcdonalds for a day and I heard no mention of a union. I think its just a matter of a lot of scummy people in this country.

I think americans expect too much from and look down on people who work in the service industry, service here in the UK is pretty poor, but for the most part we just deal with it instead of making a fuss. Americans are also alot louder and friendlier and far too confident. Fat people here in the UK atleast hate themselves and most of them know their place and try to avoid attention.

wow that is repulsive, do you pride yourself on making others hate themselves? and being confident is a good thing, because ultimately it is what gives you the strength to avoid living your life in complete misery. As for being friendly, I think anyone would much rather speak with a person who won't make them feel inferior, it's human nature. Maybe you can learn a thing or two from Americans.

Caroline Desnyder come on most people drunk are at the least loud lol although I like to think I'm a pretty well behaved Scot of course ;) it's mostly about self awareness I think and it seems America has many more people who are less self aware. The interesting thing for me is I had a great aunt who lived in Florida for most the year but came back to Scotland for part of it and over time the family genuinely saw a change-being more forceful,louder,opinionated,less willing to compromise,a bit more self centred-I dunno it was strange lol anyway like the guy says it's about respect and I think we all could be done with more of that
