Blending Surfboard Rails: How to Build a Surfboard #16

In this video of the video series "How to Build a Surfboard", I blend the rails, deck and bottom after removing the foam from the rail bands mark.

Man that plastic room with that trash bag on looks like an episode of Dexter or a scene out of American Psycho. Do you not use lights to cast a shadow across the blank when shaping? Gorilla set up for sure, but I can respect that.

Dude your stuff is rad. I've used every video and now I'm at this stage with an xps foam version of a badfish river surfer. Any difference in sanding grit and sealing with the pink xps foam? Any tips or any further warnings?

Zach Wenrich Hey thanks, glad they help. If you are using XPS, don't seal it, leave it a little rough, with like 80 or 100grit so that the epoxy has some extra surface area to adhere too. That building foam XPS is closed cell so it doesn't absorb extra epoxy or water if you get a ding so it's better if you don't seal it.

What about painting it? Am I good to do that? It's right now that ugly pink haha

Zach Wenrich I haven't tried it myself, I read that some people do and some people don't, your mileage may vary. You can always paint the hot-coat (waterbased paint) and then either glosscoat or automotive clearcoat it.

Ok thanks. So waterbased will have a strong enough bond on the hotcoat, and will the glosscoat adhere well to the paint?

Zach Wenrich Yes as long as you sand the hotcoat and wash the board with detergent, what ever paint you use do a test on something first to see if the epoxy will stick, I have had good luck with satin or flat paint, do not use an enamel or gloss paint.

What exactly is the best suitable density for surfboards from EPS foam blocks?

It's just preference. I use no. 1# and 2#. The denser the heavier/stronger the board. Don't use lighter than 1#.
