Think I was slightly rougher on the ep at the end than I should have been. Matter of high expectations I think. Trying something new here - The video is currently under dispute w/Hasbro, which usually takes a couple weeks for response, but generally goes through fine. This is the first time that I'm making a video public _while_ it's under dispute rather than afterward, so there is still a chance it'll get re-blocked later and I'll have to deal with it. But until then, have at it~

I think there were more paths this episode could have taken. You're right about high expectations. With a guest star, we expect something more, but the episode was instead written pretty by the numbers. Rule of 3 after all: exposit the problem, fail the first time to fix it, the succeed by applying the lesson learned between the second and third act.

I do love that the ep raised the idea of how Pinkie, really has never had a goal in her life, and came to the conclusion that... that is perfectly fine. If you really are content in where your life is at, that is perfectly all right. You don't have to force yourself to have some 'goal' just because others might. You just have to find what makes you happy.

Sans Smirk's dynamic with Cheese kinda reminds me of Pinkie and Maud's relationship! Sans Smirk and Cheese are clearly friends, they just have different ways of expressing themselves; Cheese is super expressive and energetic, Sans is more stoic, but still expressive, just in his own way.

I appreciate that with Sans Smirk, they didn't actually make him a villain. It would have been so easy to make him the guy who's making Cheese depressed or sabotaging his products, but no. he's just a guy trying to quantify something that can't really be quantified, and he clearly cares about the factory.

One of the things I like best about this episode is that it would have been easy for a lesser writer to turn this into a basic Art vs Business and/or Quality vs Quality story, for which Sans Smirk would have been an obvious bad guy. But Sans serves his purpose as the business pony, and he’s still a good guy, who’s legitimately supportive of Cheese Sandwich. I actually came out of this episode wishing I could have seen more of him!

Personally I see this episode as a response to the fandom once and for all on the subject of Pinkie Pie's purpose. You bring up how they've done other episode where this was addressed in other ways. Which is true. Yet I've still seen people question her purpose. So I see this as them putting that final nail in the coffin of this discussion. Which I'm fine with. I felt where she was as a character was perfect since the first season. I mean she has two steady jobs that she enjoys doing, is a beloved pillar of the community and provides a service to the town that has been shown to be essential for it to run smoothly. So her having to find even more to do with her life seemed ridiculous. Although I'd also argue Fluttershy 'needing' to officially open an animal sanctuary was just as unnecessary since that seemed to be what her job was already in season 1. Well that or a ranger tasked with looking after the edge of Everfree Forest.

LOL, there was a Willy Wonka reference before you requested it Blank Check. One of the guard pony's lines was a reference to the 1st movie with the, "No pony goes in, no pony goes out." At tinker said that line to Charlie in the beginning of the movie. I also think the Lab area was a reference too to the same lab in the Chocolate factory. Of course there was Cheese's outfit for that song.

I liked Weird Al as Cheese Sandwich more here than in Pinkie pride since he was kind of an asshole to Pinkie in that episode because he was encroaching in on her territory..here you can see the love between them blooming that will in the last episode lead to them getting married and having a child.

I really liked this one. Not only because the writing is good and jokes funny, but the moral hit me pretty well. My only real issue with it is that, for the most part, the story could be over in 5 minutes if they took out all the gags that go nowhere. But that's a thing for most mid-season mlp episodes, it just felt... More prevalent, here.
