Nice to see you directly acknowledge Ben Shapiro Thug Life, it's been a long time and yes this is the perfect punchline lol. I'm still subbed to that guy's channel too though it's been a dead meme and channel for a while now. But yeah it was a missed opportunity to actually use the MLG epic gamer sunglasses and fully embrace the meme, as well as have Ben do something with a violin, but it was still hilarious nonetheless.

Yes, that letter, crafted so splendidly with grace and dignity more modern forms of correspondence are profoundly lacking. I had the opportunity some years ago to read some letters written in 1864 by several different soldiers, none ranking higher than corporal, from both the North and the South to wives and parents. I think only one had more than 6 years of formal schooling. The first thing that was so crazy to realize was how different the English language as spoken in America back in1864 is from what was spoken even during WWII, and almost seemed like an entirely different language if compared to how the average 30 year old speaks to day., even when the people from 1864 were from modest rural families with what was even then considered very little education. Reading the letters there was a considerable range in spelling skills, but the syntaxes, vocabulary, conjugation, and a sense of formality, even in letters to wives and parents, but somehow still seemed to effortlessly convey the emotions of men that deeply missed the people they loved, and there was a definite warmth to there writings. A few of these letters were obviously written the day or night before what they expected to be a very hard day of battle that would turn out to be one of the biggest battles of the Civil War., and the doubts and fears these young men, likely between 18 and 24 years old, while obvious were still conveyed in a dignified and sensitive manner, free of false bravado one expects from young men heading into battle soon. These thoughts were written down with some sensitivity to avoid causing the loved ones any unnecessary grief or fear of their own and overall all of the writers managed to keep a positive, almost optimistic quality to their writing as if they were writing with a sense of duty towards family to reassure them that they had survived thus far, and were in good health and spirits and should not be worried over. But ultimately what I found to be perhaps the most poignant part of reading these letters was the fact that the language used by both the northern soldiers, and the southern soldiers, which I expected to be very different based on the differences in how differently people from the north and south speak today were in fact nearly indistinguishable. The one exception, the soldier with the 6th grade education, and was from NYC was a little more direct, a little less flowery in his choices of words, not much but just enough to make me think "New Yorkers have always been New Yorkers ". Otherwise the writing of all was so similar that the old description of the Civil War of "When brother fought brother" became so much more evidently true and made the experience one that I'm glad to have had, also left me feeling somewhat melancholy afterward at the realization that despite their obvious differences in so many ways all these soldiers fighting and dying on each side were still at least on some levels still so alike their brothers they were fighting so desperately against. And now I see what America faces today and can't help but feel that sense of melancholy returning due to the fact 160 years later we appear to have not only lost so much of our ability to communicate with grace and dignity but have also learned little to nothing about avoiding division from our brothers. Sorry for the entire novel I've written, I guess I've just spent too much time in my own head lately thinking about these things and needed to put them into text form in order to maybe release them so I can get back out of my malaise and into doing the things I ought to be doing.

@@oldhillbillybuckkowalskiwhere can I find said letters?
@oldhillbillybuckkowalski2 ай бұрын
@peacewithyou6341 they were at Eastern New Mexico University, Portales campus, on loan to the American History dept from the New Mexico Military Institute which was located in Roswell New Mexico. I don't recall if they belonged to NMMI directly or if they were privately owned by an individual who collected memorabilia from the American Civil War. It was 1986 when I was taking a couple classes at ENMU so it's been almost 50 years. I do know that the New Mexico Military Institute closed down a long time ago, mid 1990s I believe.

Michael dying when he reread the "Compound Interest" line is hilariously underrated
@greynotgray68089 ай бұрын
Could you explain that to me plz? 😅
@bismaahmad7359 ай бұрын
Sooo funny
@seth7479 ай бұрын
“Compound interest” is referring to a Jewish stereo type from history-Jewish tradition rules out being able to charge compound interest to fellow Jews. But it does not say they can’t charge interest to gentiles.
@gillianjones66299 ай бұрын
@@greynotgray6808 in addition, the joke is probably extra funny to Michael because he is Catholic, and the Catholic church considered charging interest a sin (called usury). So this was a source of tension between Catholics and Jews a few hundred years ago.

I couldn't believe it 😂 absolutely love this. Like Ben said, he just did it for fun, the thing is, he's never done this before but had the guts to release it to the world.
