Funny enough, Titos is just corn ethanol, they purchase it from an industrial supplier at 95%, then water it down and redistill it so they can say they "made" it, and then they bottle and sell it. As far as price/performance goes, it's just about the cheapest way to make a neutral spirit, and, because they're buying really good source ethanol (the industrial distilling process is very, very good) the product is just about as good of a 'vodka' as you can make.

You won't go blind as long as the federal government didn't poison it before you got to it. Moonshine methanol contamination was just propaganda. Not to say moonshine can't be contaminated by other means, just that said contamination doesn't instantly kill you. Typically it's lead contamination that you have to worry about, from the cheap solder and materials used to build the stills. Not really a problem nowadays, as the folks making moonshine tend to avoid that kinda thing, and it doesn't save much money to use dangerous materials.

Tasting notes from 1 (best) to 10 (worst) with a little interpretation: Note, the bottles weren't the same volume, so price isn't necessarily the best indicator of value. 1. H, Tito's, $21, neutral odor, malty, sweet finish, expensive? 2. E, VDKA 6100, $35, nothing, neutral 3. J, Wheatley, $17, acetone, sweet, malty, not neutral, different 4. F, Kettle One, $23, yellow? nothing, slightly worse (than VDKA) 5. D, Greygoose, $30, sweet, acetone, meh 6. A, Absolute, $20, bad, malty, acetone 7. I, Stoli, $26, citrusy, bright, acetone, gin-like 8. G, Gary's Good, $10, medical cleaner smell, sweet, bad aftertaste, neutral 9. C, Laird's, $7, meh, similar to Absolute, less malty, acetone 10. B, Everclear, $17, terrible, cloudy, wet fart, horrible
@SIRslipperyasp914 жыл бұрын
So if you're trying to get drunk while totally broke lairds at 7 dollars is still cheaper and better tasting then everclear, if you can afford going up to 10 dollars garys is an improvement, but if you can afford to jump up to 17 or 21 dollars for wheatleys or titos you'll see massive improvements that that compete with vodkas twice their price.

@@TriMarkC For a test like that, you don't want "much better bourbons" you want to tighten the spread and examine what a distillery can do with a severe price limitation. Recall, federal tax and state tax take up most of the price of a well bourbon, so with a slim margin, there's only so much room for quality. Also, most of that quality difference is going to come down to distilling process, ie how much of a run makes it into a bottle, and, how long it stays on oak. Case in point, Jim Beam white is the same distillery/mashbill as Knob Creek, Bookers, and Bakers, all of which are much nicer and very, very different than Jim beam white.

Take home message: buy Tito’s
@iggywow4 жыл бұрын
yeah man, I've seen other tests where Tito's wins out as well. Indulgence here on youtube did a test of cheap vodkas and the expert there liked Tito's also.
@EdwardM1044 жыл бұрын
I like Tito's but Sobieski is definitely my budget pick, a vodka for almost half the price of a handle of Tito's that almost matches it in quality.
@saab92514 жыл бұрын
Can confirm. Myself as well as most of my friends always stock Tito’s. Very nice drinking vodka.
@tjwukitsch65054 жыл бұрын
Subbed for this well done taste test/price point check. Tito wins in my observation pretty frequently, it was good to see that it holds up under a blind test.

My go to vodka is Stolichnaya, i tend to drink it straight or on the rocks, it has a very sweet flavor for a vodka. I generally have it for an after meal drink if I eat a large meal, helps settle the stomach.
@erykszymanski91673 жыл бұрын
You should do a revisited version of this, with all 80 proof vodka and more premium brands like Smirnoff, Belvedere, Svedka, Ciroc, and Chopin.

The problem with the Everclear was definitely the tap water. Specifically, the chlorine in the tap water was reacting with the alcohol in the Everclear. Alcohol + Chlorine = a bad time. That's the reason for the discoloration and the smell and the taste. I'm also pretty sure the combination is toxic (more so than even the sum of its parts, that is). Definitely breathing it, probably drinking it, too. I mean in the amounts that you were working with, you're probably OK, but yeah. Cut Everclear with filtered water at the very least, ideally distilled water.
@ZombiesSlaier4 жыл бұрын
What? Not really. To produce a significant amount of trichloroacetaldehyde the reaction must be catalyzed, the uncatalyzed reaction is extremely slow. Ethanol and Chlorine react to form trace amounts of ethyl hypochloride, then acetaldehyde by elimination. Then, slowly, ethyl chloride. The chlorination of ethanol is terribly slow, a hydroxy group is a worse leaving group than chlorine, so unless you use a catalyst like antimony trichloride, the chlorination is never going to happen. Still, all of this is irrelevant because chlorine will evaporate faster than it reacts. Also, even if the chlorination happened completely (which will never happen), the amount of trichloroacetaldehyde would be irrelevant, it's not extremely toxic. The amount of ethanol, on the other hand, is actually toxic.
@jttech444 жыл бұрын
No, what you're seeing in the everclear is a cheap, high proof, product, with lots of higher alcohols, mixed with tap water. The tap water's mineral content causes the minerals to fall out of solution when the everclear is added, as they are no longer soluble in the alcohol/water mixture. There's nothing magically more poisonous about it, as you're suggesting. The truth is, good everclear would rank rather high in this test, because it would actually be 95% ethanol, cut down to 80 proof. You'd still have to use distilled water if you wanted to avoid it being cloudy though.

I was hoping they'd include Dan Akyroid's crystal head vodka as it's pretty expensive but I've heard it's very good. Also I've gotta try Wheatley
@andrewskiljan54234 жыл бұрын
NotOnLand Wheatley is made at the Buffalo Trace distillery in Kentucky. I got to try it when I was there. I was really there for the bourbon obviously but I liked it. Didn’t have any other vodkas available to taste it against. I’m not a vodka guy by any means but good to know that it holds up.

You need to do a guide to all of the anise flavored liqueurs. Some, if not most of them have to be redundant and can easily substitute for one another. I could be wildly off base and that's ok too.

You should have marked down the Everclear by half since you're cutting by half. That would put your first 3 in the correct spots. I actually would have preferred that you order them by your personal flavor preference; then you could judge their relative value by flavor rather than marketing.

Would highly recommend trying REYKA, a small batch vodka from Iceland. It's price point would place it somewhere in the middle but it blows away anything else I've ever tried. The company has a great backstory as well, highly recommend checking them out!

Hey Greg! Love the videos! I was wondering if you'd try to make a drink of Kuva from Warframe! It's a pretty central thing in the game, referred as "the Old Blood", which you DO get an option to drink at the end of a big quest. A bit of deep lore refers to it having a metallic taste and giving immortality. You can do whatever other research you see fit! I hope to see this in a future video!

Tito's ought to send you a check in the mail. Hell of an advertisement.
@pirojfmifhghek5663 жыл бұрын
This really is a tricky game. The "premium" nature of any vodka is all smoke and mirrors. Most of the dirt cheap stuff is made with the intention of being cheap and they'll cover that up with the legal maximum amount of sugar or glycerin. Some brands float by on name recognition alone and don't even bother to try (Absolut). Some brands add glycerin or fruit juice or other sweetener because they're trying like hell to maintain that "smooth," "premium" first impression (Goose, Tito's). And most of the rest just focus on trying to make vodka using your basic, honest rectification methods. The relative "smoothness" or pleasant characteristics you get from those are either from trace congeners (fusel alcohols and residual fatty acids) or the mineral content of the water they're sourcing. Judging the price category of any vodka? It's totally a stab in the dark. The price of any vodka is entirely marketing based. BTW, those fusel alcohols and fatty acids are most of the reason why you saw that blue hue from the Everclear. They ferment _the shit_ out of that high-amylose corn and distill it to _such_ a high proof and dispose of _so little_ of the bad distillate (because they're cheap) that it comes off the still just chock full of higher alcohols and acetic acid. When you add tap water, the compounds in the everclear precipitate from the solution and give it a cloudy haze. There are brands of Spirytus (Polish Everclear) that are distilled so well and have so little in the way of non-ethanol compounds that they're surprisingly pleasant to drink... if you sip them in very tiny amounts of course. Everclear is absolutely nasty, but Spirytus? Yeah, I'll have a tiny glass of it. Great for mixing into drinks in very, _very_ small quantities. It literally just adds ethanol without the acetone. Oh and then there are "bread wines..."

Vodka is my spirit of choice. I've also done a line up like this and Grey Goose was the clear winner. I did have a fav that was kinda tough to find, Stolichnaya Elite (black top) for many years. Recently a friend mentioned a Vodka by the name brand of Crater lake. I bought a bottle of Elite and crater lake and had a blind taste test set up. I chose the Crater lake. So my #1) Crater Lake #2) Stolichnaya Elite #3) Grey Goose
