I think someone did a replica of k.i.t.t and said that the reason why their replica steering wheel is uncomfortable is because their done wrong, and also most people forget about the front tow bar, I think the reason why you often saw the tow bar is due to the producers being lazy and would just leave the bar on between shots.

The annoying thing about this and I noticed a long time ago was the weird long pauses. I later realised these were for advertisement breaks and the cut to a different type of scene makes this more and more obvious. Completely edited to have them in fixed spots. One day, I will count them and I'll find out how many there would have been. In the U.K. the place for breaks was usually different.
