Ever hear of the ABC islands? They're a chain of 3 Caribbean islands, just off the coast of Venezuela. They are Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao, hence the ABC. And in one way or another, they're all a part of the Netherlands. Today we'll shed some light on the island of Bonaire.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. Bonaire is an island in the Leeward Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. As of 1 January 2019, the island's population totaled 20,104 permanent residents.
2. In the 17th century the islands were conquered by the Dutch West India Company and colonized by Dutch settlers.
3. Its capital is Kralendijk.
4. Unlike much of the Caribbean region, the ABC islands lie outside Hurricane Alley. The islands have an arid climate that attracts visitors seeking warm, sunny weather all year round. Bonaire is a popular snorkeling and scuba diving destination because of its multiple shore diving sites and easy access to the island's fringing reefs.
5. Bonaire was part of the Netherlands Antilles until the country's dissolution in 2010, when the island became a special municipality (officially, a "Caribbean public body") within the country of the Netherlands. It is one of three special municipalities in the Caribbean; the others are Sint Eustatius and Saba.
6. Off the coast of Kralendijk lies the uninhabited island of Klein Bonaire, noted for diving and snorkeling activities. This small island can be reached by water taxi, or, for divers, by practically all of the local dive operators.
7. The slave houses at Witte Pan and Oranje Pan are small houses on Bonaire where the slaves who worked in the salt pans spent the night.

I'm fascinated by all the Caribbean Islands. They have such deep history. We have been to Aruba, Curacao, and St. Maarten, but that was 20 to 30 years ago. I have never heard of Bonaire until I came across this video. Are you focusing just on Dutch territories, or all the islands in the Caribbean? There are thousands of them....some uninhabited, some private, and some large and small. We have also been to St. Thomas and St John Islands. I have tried to find more reading material about the Caribbean and the very long documented history, but it's not easy to find. I don't know how they kept records so long ago. My guess would be that the magistrate or governing body on the island would have records for larger islands and possibly better records in the countries that ruled them at various times. I seem to hear quite a bit about Antigua more than others. I did read that it was a British colony as early as the 15th century but acquired from the Spanish....and other European Countries. So much interesting history beyond the tales of Blackbeard or Bluebeard and Pirates that is barely mentioned in tourist information.

This video is part of a Dutch series, so that's what I'll be covering here. I also covered the British and French territories, check out the playlist on my channel. I know there are way more islands out there, their number is overwhelming. It fascinates me too, but I don't think I have the time to cover all of them.

I’ve been to Bonaire, it’s a nice little island country. Though it was istablished that Bonaire is not directly part of the Netherlands, but still part of the Netherlands was kinda confusing. Thanks for clearing this up. And the salt mines are insane
