I'm not very good at explaining, but when you meditate into the spirit world, you leave your body behind thus not being able to bend when entering the spirit world but when you walk through the portal into the spirit world. You'll still have your body, so you're able to bend whatever element while in the spirit world. if all that made sense.

Unalaq basically tells us in that same episode (the reason he thinks he can open the portal from the indie now is because he has his body, and what does he do with his body to open the portal: bend water). And we learn it through Aang in the first season of Avatar: The last Airbender when he tries (and fail) to bend in the spirit world.

For me, that implies that he was the first one to open the spirit portals long ago and leave the Spirit World and that only he and Raava have that power. Not that he created the Spirit World. That is why the Avatar has that power because of their fusion with Raava.

The Spirit World has always been its own separate plane. If you listen closely to the previous episode, they say that spirits crossed through the portals into the physical realm slowly over time back in Wan's day. One portal crosses planes at the physical North Pole, one at the physical South Pole. Spirits and humans could freely cross planes as long as the portals were open, it's just that the spirits overtook the physical world, presumably since humans couldn't coexist peacefully with them.

I think it's just a little confusing because the two portals are on opposite sides of the planet in the physical world, but right next to each other in the Spirit World, which makes it seem like some kind of in-between zone.

It was stated that the barrier between the Physical World and the Spirit World grows thin, and eventually disappears outright for a single day, as the Solstices approach. So that would be how spirits cross over, I'd say: when the barrier is weakened for some reason.

Something I realized, if Korra or everyone else just did absolutely nothing at this point on Unalaq would have failed anyway since later he doesn't get the ransom to force korra to open the portal with, so Unalaq ultimately won on pure luck. Unalaq just sucks.

They could just went to the southpole and closed the Portal from the outside. They get Lin, Mako, maybe Tonraq, possible even Katara, go there just bust through the defense and close it. That would be so much easier... but then the story wouldn't had gone in the way it did, there wouldn't be airbenders because the convergence was skipped, Zaheer couldn't break out and free his friends. They could not harm Korra. She would not be lame for years and Kuvira would not have any cause to reunite the earth kingdom. All this built on their decision to close the portal from the inside at this certain point in time. As much as I hate that Korra loses her connection to Aang and 10000 years of knowledge, it was an important step. Like Wan changed the world, she did it again. After all there was no place on the Souther Airtemple for a Korra statue.

in this universe, the spirit world is like lots of little islands all connected together, each place is vastly different to the next in both architecture and environment, with various spirit beings living in these 'islands' like mini kingdoms, the area that vattu is held where the portals are located is the very center of the spirit world.

Where Vaatu is imprisoned is a nexus where the human world and the spirit world overlap. There are a bunch of such nexuses, but the polar ones are the primary/strongest ones. The swamp and the Library from ATLA were others. The further from a nexus, the further from the other world, so you get deeper into the human world the further you are from a nexus while in the human world, and the opposite occurs the further from a nexus in the spirit world.

Yes, there is a difference between entering the Spirit World through a Spirit Portal or by meditating. Generally, the difference is that one way leaves your body behind in the Physical World, whereas the other one allows you to actually travel to the Spirit World in body *as well* as in spirit. The more practical difference, however, is Bending. Remember back in _Avatar: The Last Airbender_ when Aang used to enter the Spirit World? He couldn't Bend when he was there. But Unalaq and the twins can clearly Water Bend; this is because they entered by Spirit Portal and not by meditation or some such.

the difference between Unalaq and Korra in the spritit world is that Unalaq has his bending since he himself enters the spirit world through the portal. while in Korra's case, only her spirit is in the spirit world therefore she doesn't has her bendings and the spirit world is VAST, huge! That's why instead of saying Korra is "here", Vaatu said Korra is in the Spirit World. The portals are in the spirit world

Unlike humans, spirits can't disassociate into two different forms. Humans can meditate into the spirit world and leave behind their physical body. For spirits, the physical and spiritual are one and the same. A spirit couldn't meditate its way into the mortal world.

Vaatu didn't create the spirit world. The Human World and the Spirit World are just separate universes. A human can either physically travel to the Spirit World through a portal, or simply send their astral form there while meditating. If you go through physically, you can bend, whereas if you just meditate your astral form there, you can't bend. All Vaatu did was break through the divide and presumably create the spirit portals and spirits went through them, eventually filling the human world. Spirits can also temporarily manifest themselves in the physical world and even take things back to the spirit world (like Hei Bai). But Iroh's ability to see the spirit dragon was exclusive to him. At one point in his life, he journeyed into the spirit world (presumably by meditating, though it's unclear), so it stands to reason that he'd have a unique connection to the spirits.

I actually like that Varrick is a badguy. The whole diconomy was presented at the begining of Korras uncle representing spirituallity in conflict with industrialism and materialism, which in turn is represented by Varrick. By showing them both in an evil light it shows how they are both neutral concepts that can use both evil and good. My issue is that the spirituality side of things seems much more poorly represented as Unaloc is never as likable as Varrick and spirituality in Korra seems to translate to havining magic powers as opposed to being a sensitive enlightened person of faith or who understands aspects of hummanity that require deep introspection and open minded observation of life.

When you enter the spirit world through the portals, you enter it with your body so you have your bending there. When you enter it through meditation, you exist in the spirit world as a spirit and leave your body behind in the real world so you dont have any bending. The advantage of entering as a spirit is that you can just do it any time any where, where as if want to enter with your body you have to travel across the world to the spirit portal. Also as a spirit they have some extra abilities like moving like a spirit(teleporting)

Spirits can be both states, phyisical and non physical, so thay can solidify to some extent. The thing woth the spirit world is that you can enter it in two ways: physically, entering through the portals or spiritually, by meditation. The advantage of entering physically is that benders can use their bending. Using bending in the spirit world wasn't possible before because people didnt enter it through the portals

Yin = darkness | Yang = light; philosophically, yin is considered female and yang male. The creators switched the "genders" of the two spirits, respectively.

My observation and opinion not hate as I love these guys and both ATLA and LOK immensely. I really enjoyed their reaction to ATLA and season one of LOK, but it feels like they are paying a little less attention to detail and dialogue in LOK than they did in ATLA. They have had so many questions and speculations about the spiritual side of the Avatar since the beginning of ATLA and now they are finally getting answers and it's almost like they are trying to make the facts fit into their speculations then instead accepting the info presented. I hope as I keep watching the reactions I see them start looking at LOK as the world changing and teaching Korra rather instead of the other way around. ATLA was about Aang changing the world, but LOK is about the opposite.

cant really blame them if they seem confused😂😂everybody was confused as hell when these particular couple of episodes came out, LOK being more "complicated and hard to understand" compared to ATLA is what gets it so much hate. People watch ATLA in one go and nobody ever goes "how did that just happen" or "wait that shouldn't work", because they already have an established set of rules and lore that if and when ATLA breaks them they explain them immediately. A small example would be Amon's bloodbending somehow able to take someone's bending was never explained, or how Korra was able to airbend after that, they never get in depth explanations but cant really blame them for that since Nick told them to just bum rush Book 1

if I remember correctly, When in the the Spirit travel to the Spirit word there it cannot use Vending. Im not sure if that only works for when they are on spirit do, so since the bad guy has travel with his body trough a portal dont know if he has his Bending.
