Yeah Korra and Asami are together in the follow-up comics, where they make it a lot more clear, the show just kinda teases it at the last second. Also if I'm remembering right the comics add that Kya is lesbian too. There were definitely SOME hints to their relationship over the season (Korra only writing to Asami while she was away, not Mako or Bolin, Korra's little blush when Asami complimented her hair) but yeah, I don't think they were even expecting to take these characters in this direction during seasons 1 and 2. Still, I like the joke that Mako was such a bad boyfriend that his two girlfriends ended up hooking up with each other instead lol.

they played with the idea from the inception of Korra as a show and felt they were actually a cute couple but thought awww would be cool if but during the last two season they actually asked if Nickelodeon would be ok (as they never did) and they basically got the go ahead as long as there isnt kissing or more. THis finale aired on a friday and after the weekend they released a statement proclaiming it canon and how it happened behind the scenes and why they had to do it like they did. bryankonietzko.tumblr.com/post/105916338157/korrasami-is-canon-you-can-celebrate-it-embrace good read. also fun LGBT tv tidbit: after this happened it basically opened the door for a lot of other queer cartoon characters to be shown. as most noteable ones in the recent years all happened after Korra. and yes I live for the comic they released, They even described how same sex couples are viewed in the four nations. Also to no surprise to anyone: Avatar Kyoshi was bi. ;)

At the time they couldn't, remember this was Nickelodeon standards they were abiding by back in 2014. It never would have been able to air, the subtle hints along the last 2 seasons and the implied ending was the most they could get away with. Plus it opened up the way for future kid animation shows to have characters that were part of the LGBT community.

@Just a man trying to learn They are in a different stage of their relationship though, this is essentially a first date, not quite a full blown declaration of love and official start of a relationship like we see in the end of ATLA. I'm a fan of the relationship, I think it was well set up, but I think that a full blown kiss right there would've been too soon.

“I think it’s just trust” P. S. There were a lot of VERY subtle hints. Around season 3 Bryke decided they wanted korrasami and Nick basically said they were ok with it but they couldn’t be too obvious. So they did small things like korra and asami being paired up in season 3 and korra only writing to asami while she was away. There was also the scene where asami complimented korra’s hair and korra blushed. Basically if you were looking for it you saw it and if you weren’t then you didn’t. And it’s not meant to be ambiguous that was just the most Nick would allow. Bryke made a blog post after confirming it.

I think that this is something worth thinking about some more, certainly something that’s made me think some more. Some other people should examine personal biases after this series finale it seems, based on the variety of reactions. If I saw 2 guys having those kind of interactions would we assume they were just friends or into each other? Why is it so acceptable to see 2 women acting in that way, and we don’t jump to the conclusion of a non heterosexual relationship? If I had more friends or people around me who were not heterosexual and open about their relationship (public displays of affection be that flirting etc) would I have caught on to it sooner?

One of Kuvira's core beliefs was that the advance of technology, combined with Korra's own personal weakness, had made the Avatar as a global influence irrelevant. In her mind, having some sage reincarnated mystic travelling the planet, telling world leaders what to do, was archaic and ineffective. When the avatar single-handedly deflected and overcame Kuvira's greatest weapon and technological marvel, while also going out of her way to save Kuvira in the process, it makes sense that Kuvira would go "Well shit, maybe I was wrong". What DOESN'T make as much sense is that all the soldiers, all the officers, all of Kuvira's indoctrinated, worshipful followers would also think that she was wrong and just stand down on the spot because she told them to. The rest of the Earth Empire was still perfectly well-off, it makes sense that they would continue resisting without Kuvira and without the weapon, just like the Empire in Star Wars kept on trucking even after the Emperor and the Death Star were destroyed.

Most of the Earth Kingdom was forced into service and with both Kuvira, Bataar jr. gone and likely most of Kuivra's top officers lost with the Colossus odds are while there will be some continued resistance most of the army is just going to fall apart.

Considering how she conscripted so many of the soldiers... why not?? What makes no sense is how they didn't execute Kuvira!! She was a mass murderer!!! She really was. Ruthless taking over provinces, making working or extermination camps.... wtf??? Maybe they made her look worse than they wanted... but that's what we got. Honestly she was beyond redemption, she didn't deserve it.

I like to look at it this way: Korra and Asami spent a lot of time together in book 3. They got to truly know and appreciate each other as friends and people. And when Korra was injured, who did she write to? Asami. Not because of any romantic feelings, but because she felt a connection that sometimes is too tough to explain what it is. And over the course of this season, that connection began to to turn into something more clear and defined. And now at the end, they turn that into something more real. They don't need each other to get over their traumas. They want each other.

I really like the Tenzin scene you mentioned and the fight with Zaheer at the end of book 3. Pretty much all the major fight scenes were thrilling and I really enjoyed all the scenes reunifying with Team Avatar. I think it was just enough to make me happy and nostalgic, but not too much that it felt like fan service. Although, I think it would’ve been really sweet to see Zuko reunite with Iroh in the spirit world. I don’t know how or where they could have done it, but it would have been really nice.

Mako did not need to risk himself for others but he did it. Korra did not need to risk herself for others but she did it. Actually, the fact that she risks herself for her enemy is even more admirable than Mako risking himself for his friends. The reason no one talks about it, I suspect, is that no one really care about Mako though. He's not an interesting character, probably the least interesting of the bunch.
@marche800
@marche800 6 жыл бұрын
Aesahethr I mean nobody would've blamed Korra if she had let Kuvira die, so I think it's a bit unfair to suddenly undercut mako even if he isn't the most popular or interesting character. Plus Korra is the main protagonist her doing something like that is more expected, but for someone like mako to do something so major is noteworthy.
@Arkayjiya
@Arkayjiya 6 жыл бұрын
"I mean nobody would've blamed Korra if she had let Kuvira die" That's true and that's an argument *in favour* of Korra's heroism. She had no reason to save her besides said heroism. That makes her *more* remarkable, not *less* like you seem to imply, and it was not obvious for her to do that (protagonist does not automatically mean "spare the bad guy"). In fact it was the conclusion of a four season character arc that led her to that point. In the end, my point isn't that Mako didn't do something heroic, just that he was definitely not the MVP of that episode, Korra was.

One thing to say about how Toph "feels" like just an older Toph, is that realistically, that's more surprising than Katara and Zuko feeling different. They were children in the original series. They had SO MUCH MORE LIFE to live and so many more experiences. They are legitimately different people and that makes sense. Toph's case is a bit unique in that she got tired of who she became as an adult and decided to fuck off to the woods when she retired, and now she's sort of in her second childhood. Katara and Zuko have grown, Toph has regressed.

The Korrasami is so strong that they discussed it first! And yes, it was progressive for its time! And although some folks don’t see it as a successful build up as others, the fact that you could still tell from that ending meant that Bryke’s intention still got through! Spoiler: Although they don’t outright get with each other their feeling still comes across and then it gets solidified in the comics!

I think out of the moments in this finale, my favorites has gotta be Korra redirecting that liquid metal, Mako's "sacrifice", the scene between Korra and Tenzin, and the last scene between Korra and Asami. Korra redirecting that liquid metal was, in my opinion, such a powerful moment for her character because of how similar that liquid metal looked in comparison to the metal poison. I mean, we saw how scary fast that thing was hurtling towards Korra, yet she didn't flinch at all. Makes me wonder how she was feeling in that moment when she saw that thing coming at her like that? Mako's scene was so reminiscent of the last agni kai! The music and bending drowning out everything else, the beautiful contrast with the pink and blue, Mako's fierce resolve, just everything! What I love about that scene was how he was essentially making good on what he said in "Remembrances" (Korra inspiring him to continually put others before himself) despite the potential consequences. He was literally willing to sacrifice his life to save everyone, and I was honestly scared for him. Since LOK isn't afraid to kill off characters, I really felt like they were going to finally do it with a member of Team Avatar. I mean, everything was perfectly set up for his death. A part of me was glad that didn't happen though, because I don't know if my heart could take it. The Korra/Tenzin scene? What more do I need to say about that? It was simply a very heartwarming scene between the two. As for the Korrasami scene, a lot of people are already talking about it and I understand that there are also a lot of people that have a problem with it. I won't get into that though, so I'll just say that I found that ending for the two of them beautiful simply because the two of them went through so much yet they were still able to find happiness in the end. It was just heartwarming. So...we're finally here at the end. This has been one hell of a journey with you guys and I can't thank you all enough for putting so much hard work into these reactions for us. In the end, whether you prefer one show over the other, I think we can all agree that we love the world of Avatar and it was something that was worth getting into. God, I'm feeling even more melancholy at the moment because you guys are almost done with FMAB as well.

You have to compare ATLA and LOK for context. The mistake many ppl make is that they say a particular LOK story/plot point is bad BECAUSE it's different than how Avatar did it. For the record I do NOT believe that Blind Wave makes this mistake. They do a good job of referencing ATLA for context and acknowledging that LOK is a different type of story.

Okay, so, I’m at work and I may have to edit this a few times as a result, since I’m typing on my phone. There are a lot of reasons I love this show, and the biggest is how much I relate to Korra. Part of that has to do with Korrasami happening, but it’s mostly about her character and growth overall. When the show premiered, we were the same age. Right from the start, our lives seemed to kind of line up. I wasn’t any kind of spiritual person, I was an athlete. Involved in all kinds of sports, that kind of physical activity was a big part of myself. I often came across as confident, but I was insecure in many ways, and while I never meant to be I could also be selfish. But I got friends that helped me grow, and I started to feel like I knew what I was supposed to do in my life. And then I got sick. I won’t go into details, but it was a sickness that often left me bedridden. I couldn’t work. I couldn’t play the sports I loved. I couldn’t support myself and was barely able to make any money. I was constantly tired, constantly frustrated, and felt like I’d lost myself. It’s been a few years, and it’s taken a while to accept I’ll never be how I was. I’ve had to grow beyond that. I’ve gotten better, a lot better, and I’m finally feeling like myself again. In the midst of all of that, I also figured out I was bisexual. I realized that I was attracted to someone who had been my friend a while, someone with whom I’d once had a complicated and resentful relationship. So when Korra ended, now 21 as I was at the time, and she walked forward - able to stand on her own again - and grabbed Asami’s hand....I can’t even begin to describe how it felt. Her journey reminded me of my own life in so many ways, it’s hard to not take it personally when people don’t like her, or call her starting a relationship with Asami to be rushed or unrealistic. This last season in particular makes me cry, makes me feel stronger, and makes me feel like I can continue to grow. And it was exactly what I needed.

I'm glad Shane pointed out that Wu's decision to just dissolve the entire Earth Kingdom isn't really as hunky dory as the show makes it out to be. Yes, we've seen the corruption and inequality that was rampant within the Earth Kingdom, but we've also seen that most of the states completely collapsed when they had to be independent during the chaos after Zaheer killed the Queen. The State of Yai was literally fucking starving because they were presumably reliant on other parts of the Kingdom for their food. Wu SHOULD have committed himself to reforming and democratizing the Earth Kingdom, sure, but they should've tried to find a combinattion between the democracy of Republic City, the more industrialized, centralized structure of Kuvira's Empire, and the values and culture of the old Earth Kingdom. Having Wu just go "fuck it", dissolve the entire country and just hope that the states can sort themselves out just feels like him giving up and letting other people deal with the problems his dynasty created, instead of working to fix them. It's like if Zuko, instead of becoming Fire Lord and fixing the Fire Nation at the end of ATLA, had said "You know, this whole "fire nation" thing is kind of dumb anyway, let's just tear it down and let the provinces each be their own country, that should work". It really just felt like a complete, out-of-the-blue copout, and it always made me kind of sad as someone who really liked the lore and history of the Earth Kingdom.

Completely agree. The lack of a central authority figure caused the chaos that led to the rise of Kuvira in the first place. A constitutional monarchy would make far more sense.

I mean, as it's shown, he says he's thinking about it. He hasn't done anything yet, and even if he does fully dissolve the monarchy, it's not just going to vanish overnight with no replacement, like when Zaheer assassinated the queen. Sure, it won't be as easy as just saying it, but going back to Zuko, do you think a new Fire Lord regaining the trust of the world was as easy as him making his speech at the end of AtLA? Both shows end similarly in regards to a bright stated future that's going to take time and effort to achieve.

as far as i remember, wu never said he was going to turn each province of the earth kingdom into its own country, he was just planning to get rid of hereditary monarchy. so, transition into democracy, presumably. and a centralized system for governing such a large, diverse landmass has historically been shown to be a colossal failure, a decentralized system where different regions govern themselves with the power of the central authority backing them would work far better.

@@xJayhawkFANx I don't think it was forced at all. The way we see their friendship blossom and develop, from rivals and jealousy to best friends, and then to Asami being Korra's only true confidant for three whole years... They connected very deeply while Korra was recovering. What we see in the end of Season 4 is _exactly_ what it looks like when two women who previously thought of themselves as straight begin to realise they have more romantic feelings for one another, and decide to explore where that might lead. Real life isn't blindingly obvious, or forced, or contrived, it's slow, weird, and unexpected. They ended the show with the pair of them basically going on a first date and being open to see what happens, and IMO that's exactly the right way to play it.

It wasn't planned, but since season 1 they liked the idea of the two ending up together. One of the creators mentioned that, on season 3, they realized there were no rules prohibiting them from doing it, so they decided to go for it, but they decided they had to keep it on the down low to make sure it wasn't going to be stopped. They did leave hints, like how close they are when they are alone, Korra blushing when she compliments Asami (no, she didn't blush when Asami complimented her, she blushed when she went for it, and that is even more adorable), but I completely understand people that didn't see this happening, as long as it's understood that they are a couple, a great couple at that.

There were no hints, the letters are always used as a LOOK PROOF moment. Korra has a group of four friends. Mako is her Ex, BoLin is terrible with social situations... oh and did I mention Asami is the only other girl in the group? Why is it romantic for a girl who just had a near death experience to confide in the only other girl in her group of friends? I'll say it again, they made the end scene to be progressive, not inclusive. They did it for the legacy and the hype, not the community or characters, they used it for one last talking point in a dying show. That's not right, and that's why it seems like an unnatural, forced relationship, and that's why the show died. They forced in ideas instead of writing a good story.

On the one hand, I agree that it's kind of weird the spirits just didn't care enough to intervene, and then immediately came back to the city once the fighting was over. Kuvira WAS abusing their power and energy after all. When Korra went to speak to them they made it seem as if they didn't want to get involved in a human war, and that they didn't really care about who won. But at the same time, we know that Kuvira harvesting the vines hurt them and pissed them off, which is why they lashed out and kidnapped all those people. Korra saving those people shouldn't really have been enough to calm the vines down from Kuvira's abuse, so it DOES seem a bit weird that the sprits just sat the conflict out. Not wanting to fight an entire army is one thing, but going after Kuvira when she was isolated and helpless would've made sense.

I think the way Korra AND Asami was written throughout the series hinted that they liked each other more than just friends - of course, not all at once, but there is a buildup that people claim isn't there. They were in a love triangle in the beginning, and yet they both managed to stay friends and get closer even after the relationship fallout by season two. Then they got even closer during season three travelling all around the Earth kingdom, especially when they got captured and escaped the desert together, and then with Asami basically looking after Korra after the poisoning. So of course when Korra went back to the Southern Water Tribe she would feel only Asami really understood how she felt about the whole thing.

Like the pop up said, they are confirmed to be a couple, and there have been hints throughout, and like they said, Nick wouldn't have gone through with it if they were too overt, so they did what they could, and yeah for its time it was fairly progressive for a Nick show and it made a lot of people very happy. Their feelings were my feelings exactly when I first watched this!!! I was thinking I guess this is a thing, okay cool. Very nice and subtle. I liked how things were wrapped up with Mako. With Korra and Asami I was glad that it was implied that it was a beginning.

Did you know that there is a book 5 of Korra (in the comics)? I think it was also supposed to be animated but then the show was cancelled for animation, I'm not quite sure about that though. I would really like to see the story of book 5 animated as well.

It's funny seeing you guys all worried about the kids if Korra and Asami kissed at the end but in the 4 books when Mako kissed both Asami and Korra you didn't seem to be worried

A lot people argue that Korra and Asami were rushed and unplanned. But I really don't agree with that. Obviously the idea of them together probably came about a little later, but that was most likely due to the first two seasons not being promised a follow up. And I don't at all think it was rushed. They don't end the series making out and in love, they end the series starting a relationship. They've built a friend ship over four seasons and it obviously progressed into a crush which is now where we end with the start of it.

So glad they didn't make Asami and Korra kiss, it would've felt so rushed, but them holding hands and looking into each other's eyes was just the right call.😁👍

Even tho as much as i want the kiss to happen on-screen, you're right the holding hands actually is a good choice. Could possibly mean it's a start of a new stage of relationship that they just figured out. The kiss could have happened if there was one ep they focused about their feelings.

Heh, think about it: Mako likes Asami, Asami likes Mako. Mako likes Korra, Korra likes Mako. Korra likes Asami, Asami likes Korra. It’s a perfectly reciprocal love triangle! Oh, and Bolin likes Korra, and not the other way around, so he’s just hanging off of her. Kind of like a love... kite?

Korra and Asami's relationship was developing since season 1. I felt the same way after my first watch through, but when I rewatched Korra I actually picked up on some small hints and relationship developments.

It's the end of an era. I knew about y'all during all the surge of RWBY reactions (I think I first heard about y'all by MurderOfBirds), but finally watched a full video for an Avatar reaction. Your reaction format was very different than others: a group reaction (which at the time was uncommon) and y'all had a more analytical + discussion aspect mixed in which was unique too. It was that what made me subscribe and follow your avatar reactions weekly. I eventually followed some of your other content too. I'd just like to say thank you for those times and also extend a thank you to the other subscribers cause y'all brought up fun comments at times; the whole experience was great.

They should read the articles by the creaters on Korrasami, maybe look at some images from the first follow-up comic and/or an overview of the clues (Korra blushing in the reunion episode etc) and then have a short discussion video afterwards, knowing that it's canon, perhaps as an intro before the Pai-sho video. As for the 'liquid metal': that was the comet collection from Zaofu. And the new spirit portal: Vaatu once mentioned at was he who made the original 2 portals; considering the vines are a creation of Vaatu, and the spirit vine weapon is basically the same as Vaatu's beam attack, it's not that far fetched to think enough of that energy can create another portal

The Korra/Asami hints started as early as season one: "that prissy, beautiful, elegant rich girl." Only one of those adjectives isn't a compliment, and Korra eventually came to her and stated that she thought she was prissy, but had changed her mind. She never said she changed her mind about thinking Asami was beautiful and elegant though.

Zaheer and Kuvira both felt like they could have been all time greats if the show could have gotten us a little more into their heads, so that we could better grasp and empathize with their emotions+drives. Not that Avatar’s antagonists have ever been about that. Amon (Aman?)... Him and the equalists were fantastic and presented some great and challenging themes... that were largely invalidated and thrown out the window as soon as his true identity was revealed. It’s the core of why season 1’s ending was such a letdown for me.
