just an extra fact about how the british government handled the quarantines around christmas - while they told everyone to not see their family around christmas and people couldn’t be in hospitals to help dying family members, the government were having christmas parties, drinking dancing and celebrating. it was all exposed eventually with recorded footage of their parties
@FistOfFiori15 күн бұрын
Yeah, came here to post that context! People are still understandable angry about it yet all the Tories do is shrug it off. One of the reasons they got smashed at the election. Also, of course there was a party in Downing Street either on the same day or the night before Prince Philip's funeral. A royal funeral that should have been a big event stuck to the 30 person rule like the rest of us did with funerals we attended, a striking and memorable image being the queen sitting alone and masked up. Mad.

Yeah Blind Wave missed the reference (maybe also the line?), but this was part of what made Joy so infuriated when The Doctor called her out for following "the rules". She angrily clarifies that yes, she followed the rules so she couldn't be with her mum as she passed away in hospital. Meanwhile, the government who instigated those rules (the Conservatives/Tories) flouted them so they could have fun parties. This was a major controversy in the UK for a long time, given how many people abided by the lockdown even in the event of family members dying and other tragic (or beautiful, such as births etc) missable events, and is touted as the critical moment of the long-standing Tory run in power. Many voted for Labour, Lib Dems, and other parties because of the lockdown parties (and general inadequacy).

a lot of countries have daylight savings in some form, some places don't do it in local cases but every one does when it comes to the internet so even if a country stops doing it within their own country they will still be forced to do it online unless the whole world agrees to stop doing it which is what most people want but it's unlikely to actually happen globally

Ncuti plays the doctor with such meaning. You feel every thing from his portrayal, you care about every one he cares about. It’s really brilliant to have such an empathetic performer play the doctor. The clothing shop called Mr. Benn's is a reference to an old British children's cartoon series (based on a series of children's books) called Mr. Benn. The title character was an ordinary Londoner who would pop along to a costume shop each week where the mysterious owner (who wore a fez!) would suggest an outfit to try on. Once changed into the costume, Mr. Benn would step through a door at the back of the changing room and find himself transported through time to the period the outfit belonged to. After having an adventure there the door to the changing room would show itself again, and Mr. Benn would return home to the modern day.

In some BTS for this Moffat actually talked about how you'd really like the Christmas specials to be standalone episodes that you could watch without knowing anything about anything, but the realities of actor contracts ending/beginning with them meant he was always stuck having to either "kill off someone you love. Merry Christmas!" or else do all the legwork of introducing a brand new character to people.
@bustedsim15 күн бұрын
And yet here with Trev and Joy, he does both with both.
@michaelklaus14 күн бұрын
That statements sounds really odd coming from Moffat; which producers is he trying to jab at here for annoying him with the contracts? or is it a jab for the actors for ending their contracts hwen he wasn't ready? the obviously odd bit is that introducing new characters also happens in standalones; so that should not be an issue here at all; unless he means introducing new recurring roles where the issue is differentiating them from the other one off characters; for most of these specials he was the showrunner of the show and made the creative decisions for which characters should appear on the show; for example he decided to keep Gillian and Darvill for series 7A for which he could have them cameo in The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe (just like he decided to have A Christmas Carol companion lite); but keeping them also led to Coleman's Clara not getting introduced at the start of 7A but instead he decided to introduce her in The Snowmen... only to change his mind again and going with a contemporary Clara instead of a Victorian one which meant he had to kill off the character he also intrdouced in the same episode; you know... instead of reworking The Snowmen and/or simply introducing a new companion at the start of 7B; Then of course Matt Smith's departure was kind of a surprise and Moffat needed to cram the end of his Trenzalore arc into The Name of the Doctor... because he couldn't do that at the end of the series before; Moffat then embraced the nostlagic sendoff by bringing Gillian back again for a cameo instead of avoiding "the issue"; which leads us to Coleman's departure which was a really weird thing; Death in Heaven actually saw her being written from the show only for her to come back for Last Christmas for which according to Moffat he and Coleman kept it a secret whether or not she would return for series 9... or get killed off in that special; notice how the (exec) producers and other people who could have a say in this were alledgedly equally in the dark as the audience; this brings us to The Husband of River Song and The Return of Doctor Mysterio which both worked the most as standalones (from Moffat's Christmas specials) but my main gripe was that both featured Nardole who became a recurring role with the latter but was never ever fleshed out properly; finally we have Twice Upon a Time in which Moffat again doesn't avoid the above "issue" but instead embraces it or rather the bitter sweet nostalgia thricefold; by bringing Mackie back, bringing Bradlay in as the first Doctor, and by revealing that the Captain is the grandfather of the Brigadier and great-grandfather of Kate; you know instead of simply sending off a Doctor OR by sending off Capaldi in The Doctor Falls... and episode title obviously chosen to mislead audience into assuming it would have been his last; the issue Moffat was obviously more concerned about was introducing a new Doctor in a Christmas special and competing with The Christmas Invasion;
@peternolan550114 күн бұрын
@@michaelklaus I think you're reading a lot more into it than he ever intended. He's not making a 'jab' or criticism at anyone at all. He's simply pointing out the reality that the Christmas Special is almost always either the first or last episode of a production block even though it's the one with the most casual audience outside the regular viewers meaning that as a writer you have to balance the two demands on what the episode has to do. It's an interview on the official BBC KZbin channel so you can always check it out for yourself.

I’m not sure wether non-UK people will fully feel this episode with Joy’s story and her Mum’s passing…. It was truly for most of us in the UK especially devastating and touched home because we had very very very stringent rules which almost all of us understood the reason for and followed during Covid. Our lockdown was much much much more stringent than most others. For a period we literally could not mix with ANYONE from other households who did not live with us, we could not go to Hospitals or funerals etc. We couldn’t meet even family. We could only go outside for one form of exercise daily etc and only near where we lived. And while the most stringent elements of lockdown were going on, the Tory (Conservative) government was having parties and drinks at Downing Street completely ignoring the social distancing and lockdown rules. So many people died alone. But it’s a testament to the strength of this episode that almost every reactor I’ve seen regardless of where in the world has been moved to tears.This episode to me was expertly paced and actually is one that gets better with a rewatch too. I’ve also seen a lot of comments from people who seem to have not even watched this episode comment negatively due to their own prejudices against either Ncuti or the writer. That’s says more about them. Thanks for this reaction, really enjoyed it. 💜

As a resident of Cardiff, It always makes me smile when they use a clear location that is located here in filming then just pass it for London with a bit of set arrangements and such. This time around It's even funnier because they filmed the actual Sandringham Hotel in Cardiff and just slapped a 'London' at the end (and I don't think there is one in London, and if there is It looks nothing like the face of the building they filmed which is clearly the one in Cardiff). It specifically gives me joy, that sort of detail, because I'm not originally from the UK and when I first visited Cardiff before moving here for good, that's the very hotel where I stayed.

out of the 195 Countries in the world, 70 of them have some form of Daylight Savings, The idea for DST was developed by British scientist William Willett, and spread across Europe during the 1st world war, the 1st Country to adopt Daylight Savings time was Germany in 1916, Quickly followed by the UK, where it is Referred to as British Summertime (BST) normally it is Greenwich mean time (GMT) America Adopted it in 1918.
@OriionCygnus15 күн бұрын
Benjamin Franklin proposed the idea in a satirical paper in 1784 long before Willett. That same paper is the source of the proverb "early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise" and that is taught in US schools and is kinda general knowledge. Americans attribute (falsely) the invention of DST to Ben Franklin which makes it seem like an American idea. In reality the first to formally adopt it was Ontario Canada in 1908. Several prominent figures independently came up with the idea for various reasons including an entomologist in New Zealand who wanted more daylight hours to collect and study insects.

Thinking you're are the only ones with daylight savings time is SO American of y'all. While the first city to move their clocks forward an hour was in Ontario, Canada back in 1908, it became popularized by Germany in 1916, halfway through WW1, to save on energy costs and other countries followed suit. The world went back to regular time after the war, and DST didn't return until WW2 when It was nicknamed "War Time" and was used all-year-round. While many countries repealed national DST after WW2, many continued to practice it locally until more specific DST laws were created like the Uniform Time Act of 1966 in the US.

So for a week the time difference between the U.S. and the U.K. is an hour less. I think the U.S. changed the date of the end of daylight savings time specifically so kids wouldn't have to trick or treat in the dark. Good catch on the actual reason for dec 25th birthdate! It was based on the date of Jesus crucifixion, march 25. It was thought great prophets died on the same day they were conceived. So March 25 was held as the date of the annunciation, when the angel came to Mary and she said yes to being the mother of God incarnate. That feast day was held first. Years later when people wanted to celebrate Christ’s birthday they just added nine months to March 25. And yes there would be shepherds because nomadic shepherds were year round in the fields. @thenortherndalek15 күн бұрын
@reececapati7297 unfortunatly the leaks for season two have backed this claim up as well as Russell himself saying the Daleks ( primary ) needing a break from the show ( something I agree on, you need to build them up and make them scary again like they were back in series 1 of the revival.) and won't be returning any time soon.

As someone from the UK, I believe the reason we still use Daylight Savings is because of brexit (genuinely) I think the UK went along with the EU's plan to abolish Daylight Savings, but then Brexit happened and the UK was no longer part of that plan since we're no longer part of the EU.

Yeshua was born on September 7th (Gregorian Calendar). December 25th was Saturnalia/Yule and the date was taken over by the Church.

What I find interesting that not many people seemed to catch, the final scene has potentially two doctors present as Tennant’s doctor has claimed in Voyage of the Dammed, he had taken the last room at the inn at Bethlehem

Not about daylight savings time around the world. That’s something that would only come up when traveling. Schools do teach world history though, but I don’t know if that subject has been added or not these days.

Based on the reigns of the kings mentioned in the stories, the birth would have been more 4 BCE. Also, according to the story, the magi did not visit a newborn or infant at a manger. They visited a small child at a house. Plus, the king ordered children up to two years old to be killed, not just infants.

I really hope Anita's miniature TARDIS pays off in a later episode and she appears in a later episode. The whole White Christmas thing comes from the Victorians creating gifts like Christmas cards depicting wintery scenes.

@@ms_scribbles I don't despise him, but I dislike how he often puts too much emphasis on horror. Sometimes it works (Blink), but sometimes I just found it annoying.

Let's gooooo I may not have loved this story, but there's aspects that I did enjoy. The ending, for me, felt a lil cheap and Nichola's character Joy didn't feel like a guest star companion, cuz she felt more like an extra

It was soap opera the ending was shit.
@BlueSparxLPs15 күн бұрын
@@joshuajoshua2732 If anything it was a fairly dark ending in the context of other stories. Villengard winning here by getting to create the star is what led to the establishment of Christianity, which eventually led to the state of the planet in Boom (among other corporate atrocities Villengard are known to have created the religion to facilitate).

Technically this isnt season 2. Specials are normally considered their own thing by writers and the bbc.
@ms_scribbles15 күн бұрын
See, this is the kind of thing Moffat should have stuck to writing to. He was a mess when he was running the show and trying to write whole series arcs, but his single episodes (or two-parters) are really good.

There is indeed no “Year 0”, it goes straight from 1 BC to 1 AD. The last year before Christ and then the first year of Christ/the Common era. That’s why decades, centuries, etc END on the year that ends in 0, rather than starting on it. The first decade was 1-10 AD (rather than 0-9) so the second was 11-20 AD, and so on from there. And now we’re in the 21st century because it starts 2001 and ends 2100.
