"She was like a clock that finally struck its chime." That whole conversation, up to Flint and Miranda "recognizing" each other is so good. God the dialogue on this show is just top tier, And I love the framing of Abigail's journal used in this episode, as she goes on a journey similar to what we have as viewers. Realizing that these pirates are not monsters, but men, and all that entails.

The best part about Silver realising people listen to him because they think he has their best interests at heart is knowing that he does not care about them at all. Yet everyone believes in him because he is able to sound so believable.

In regards to Thomas' hospitalisation, he was sent to Bethlam Royal Hospital, which was an *infamous* psychiatric hospital/insane asylum in London (and England's first). Patients there were treated horrifically. (It was also known as Bedlam Hospital, which is where we get the word 'bedlam' from.)

Also, it's kind of hilarious that the crewmember tells Silver he did what he did because he knows Silver "actually has his best interests at heart" as opposed to Flint, when that's actually not true at all! Like, if anything, Flint is the one who does on a larger scale - trying to build a place where they will be stable and no longer pirates - but the perception of his actions (and his willingness to use the crew) have it come off completely differently. Silver meanwhile has consistently made it clear to Flint (and Max) that he's only in it for the gold, but as far as the crew can see...well, Silver said earlier he's a hard man not to like, and it's proving true.

That's not entirely true. Flint cares about all pirates in an abstract way, but doesn't care about them as individuals. He didn't know who Billy was and uses his crew as a means to an end. Silver acts out of self interest, but he is one of the crew, he takes the time to get to know them (because he has to), takes care of Randall (because he has to), to a ruthless pirate his motivation isn't important, he sees that Silvers tries to be liked and that's more than what Flint does.

@@AjayBlancoI mean, yeah, that’s why I said that Flint’s care was focused on larger scale care for the pirates as a whole, rather than them individually.

I think the reason Flint says "Who's Billy?" in the pilot episode is because he is too preoccupied with the Urca gold, preparing to see Guthrie, and hoping to have access to the Spanish contact in Havana. I've personally had that happen to me at work where a colleague has said "Jerry said to do this" and I've responded out loud with "Who's Jerry?" because up until then we had been having a discussion about clients and in that moment my brain could not think of a single client named Jerry. I distinctly remember my boss bursting out laughing, probably thinking I was joking. It was not until much later after the fact when I realised that they were talking about _our_ Jerry. The one who works in our department.

Yeah exactly! I thought that was the evident interpretation. I don't know why Janci is so insistent on Flint actually not knowing who Billy was in the first episode. At the start of the show, Billy is the bosun (boatswain) aboard the Walrus, which is a relatively high-ranking position. So obviously Flint would know his own officers!

Esther, Mrs. Mapleton's informant, is played by Laura Hopper. She is married to Tom Hopper (Billy Bones).

"Where did they film this?". In the Helderberg region just outside of Cape Town (the batshit insane sci-fi show Raised by Wolves was also shot in the same area).

you go into black sails thinking there's one main protagonist and there kind of is. but the deeper you go, you realize it's more of a mt. rushmore of protagonists.

SEAL Team Vane! I always felt like Flint's "Who's Billy" was just him screwing with them because Gates had just made this big speech (without Flint's earshot) about how important Billy was. Plus, like 2 scenes later in that episode, Flint was like "You're the boatswain, Billy, tell me what the men are saying". He knew who Billy was and his position on the crew.

Her journal/narration was a great touch. That these monsters have "no choice but to dance to the tune" that Flint plays is *chef's kiss* writing

Flint knows the men he allows on his ship. And if he didn’t know a lot about Billy in the first episode you can guarantee that he learned everything he could when Billy came back. Sometimes it’s better to just soak up the scene and let it happen in real time rather than talking through it and trying to catch the writers out early. Especially with a show as full of nuance like this one.
