Reavers also have little regard for their own safety. For example, they will often run ships without shielding on the reactors and surgically alter themselves with unsterilized tools like we saw in this episode. Not gunning for long lifespans, the Reavers.

Scar You forget though, they don't kill every person they come across. The cursed few that survive are intentionally turned mad as portrayed in this episode, like a sort of mental virus. Which is why their territory has actually expanded aggressively in the past few years, as said by the follow up movie.

The Alliance soldiers are really wearing the ACTUAL costumes (just painted purple) from Starship Troopers, which came out just a few years before. A lot of movies reuse old props and costumes from other movies, but I read somewhere that Starship Troopers was one of the last sci-fi movies to use all real, full-scale props. They made hundreds of costumes, guns, etc. and most of them were kept as the props stock. After that movie CGI took over and most props will be made in 1-2 copies and than digitally applied when needed.

It's funny that Eric touches on whether Reavers are meant to fill the role native Americans played in Westerns. I vaguely remember Whedon doing an interview where he said that every story needs a monster and that in the classic westerns it was the Apaches. But he wanted to remove any racial elements and make it clear that anyone could become a Reaver

@OriginalTharios _"So either he was hiding and went nuts on his own, "becoming a Reaver" as a psychological defense mechanism...or something about their biology changed because of the chemical, and they're "contagious"."_ The episode implies the Reavers intentionally left him alive, traumatized and unable to use the ship, after forcing him to witness their habits expecting he would become like them since Mal puts it together. If there's an actual physical contagion (e.g. they bodily produce more of the compound) is unknown.

18:14 Blue Sun is a corporation in the Firefly/Serenity setting. If you go back you'll notice Blue Sun logos on some of the containers when Mal, Zoe, and Jayne are going to the meeting with Badger in the continuity order pilot. The same logo pops up from time to time on various items throughout the series and film. When ever they need to add a bit of "flare" to the items on set they might throw that logo on a box, crate, shipping container, or whatever.

The space visual effects are by Zoic Studios and were kind of groundbreaking at the time (with the apparent rawness of ragged zooms, dropping focus etc. all done in CGI). Zoic went on to do visual effects for "Battlestar Galactica", "Game of Thrones", "Arrow" and "Age of Ultron" among many others but i'm pretty sure 'Firefly' is the first thing they ever worked on.

During the American Civil War, the Union or FEDERAL troops were referred to as "Blue Bellies." Therefore, the Feds in the Verse are "Purple Bellies." If you look at a map of the Verse, there are multiple systems and one in particular has a blue sun... you will also see other Blue Sun products and labeling throughout the episodes (see Ep. 1 and the crates and shipping containers in the background, etc.). Blue Sun is a Black Bag corporate entity, likely HQ'd somewhere in the system with said blue sun, that is a front for the Alliance government to have their fingers in every pie as well as launder and hide money, as well as fund and funnel secret projects and covert entities and operations - such as "the academy that no one had ever heard of before..." and agents that come in pairs, aka "two by two, hands of blue."
@perfectharbinger13986 жыл бұрын
What's funny about this episode is that, just looking on the Firefly episodes we got, this episode could be skipped and you would miss nothing plot-wise or even character-wise. But when you include the movie "Serenity", this episode is an essential watch because Holy Christ, does it give some context and depth to the Reavers. Speaking of which, you guys should do a reaction to the movie. Even if it's Patreon-only or something.
@crumdogy6 жыл бұрын
PerfectHarbinger I would totally pay to see that.
@georgial63986 жыл бұрын
actually when you include serenity this episode makes nonsense of the reavers. or the movie makes nonsense of them. one or the other. two very different origins.
@perfectharbinger13986 жыл бұрын
Not really, no. Their origin in the show is basically "Hey, these are people who've gone insane out in space" and the movie basically reveals that to be Alliance propaganda and their true origin is revealed in the movie, without giving spoilers away. Which, at surface level, does sound like a retcon but it honestly isn't. I guarantee that, if the show were to go on, the reveal of the Reavers' origin was going to be part of a major episode. And I'm sure the Reavers would have made future appearances in the show along the way too. But because of the show's cancellation, Bushwhacked and the movie are really the only details we ever get on the Reavers.
@georgial63986 жыл бұрын
Except there's this episode. Which depicts a person literally becoming a Reaver. So - it's not Alliance propaganda. This episode confirms the "Alliance version" of the Reaver origin as true. The guy in this episode is a Reaver. He becomes one.
@perfectharbinger13986 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. While it's pretty much irrefutable that the guy in the episode has basically become a Reaver, I honestly think it would be most accurate to say that there really isn't a "Bushwhacked version" or a "Serenity version" of the Reaver's origins and here's why: *SPOILER ALERT FROM HERE ON OUT FOR ANYONE READING THIS COMMENT THREAD WHO HASN'T SEEN THE MOVIE* The very first Reavers being created from citizens of Miranda being infected by that chemical, and basically having the opposite effect the chemical was supposed to have, doesn't necessarily mean every subsequent Reaver needs that chemical to become one. In Bushwhacked, we see that the Reavers basically drove that guy so insane that his only course of action was to mimic the Reavers. We can all assume this is far from the first time they've done this. Therefore, we can assume that a large amount (Probably the majority, depending on the timeline) of Reavers are men and women driven insane by previous Reavers and who have joined their ranks or whatever passes for ranks with Reavers. The reason why I say what was said in Bushwhacked is "Alliance propaganda" is because people are under the assumption ALL Reavers are simply men and women going insane out in space. Obviously, that's bullshit because of what's revealed in the movie but it's also bullshit because the reason why people are going insane and turning into Reavers isn't because "Oh, they're too far out into space" as the idea claims. It's other Reavers. And the Alliance (Or at least the higher-ups, presumably) are aware of this because they helped inadvertently create the Reavers. Tl;dr version: The origins of the Reavers revealed in Serenity can intertwine with the events of Bushwhacked and still make sense because the origins revealed in Serenity technically only apply to the very first Reavers, the ones created on Miranda while all the other Reavers are created like the pseudo-Reaver we encounter in Bushwhacked. Therefore, Serenity doesn't fuck up the info we're given in Bushwhacked and Bushwhacked doesn't fuck up the info we get in Serenity. They intertwine nicely.

Regarding the cargo being Alliance property, that's essentially why Mal fought in the war in the first place. Alliance believes everything it can see belongs to it - like a lion surveying its domain, protecting its pride. Joss Whedon calls it The Alliance for a reason. He toys with the similarity in the episode Objects In Space. "Had to. Couldn't let us profit. Wouldn't be civilized." To Mal that's what civilization means to the border planets. The Alliance steals all resources it can to make sure the core planets are well served. We have similar problems in modern society. I often wonder if the reason why Firefly was treated so poorly by certain FOX executives is because they disagreed with Whedon's politics. Bushwhacked happens to be my favorite episode. Okay they're all my favorite but back a long time ago I did an audio commentary for this episode. I doubt the mp3 is online anymore... wow! I lied! just googled on a lark and it's available on archive.org/details/ZachsWhacked and I can't believe it's still there... I can't listen to it now. I'm smoking in it. My last cigarette was in April of 2006. This was recorded a few months before that. I'm gonna start hankering for a cig if I keep listening. Great to know people are still talking about this episode over a decade later. It reveals a lot about the Reavers, and also Book. Many fans feel you can skip this episode and not miss anything. I disagree strongly. It's a lot of fun with Simon and Jayne picking on each other like school kids. We get a glimpse of Kaylee having a crush on Simon, and Joss Whedon makes a point to film River's feet as she explores the derelict. Then the 'interrogations" towards the end are priceless, and reveal a lot about the characters. Also one of Mal's best speeches is hidden towards the end. The bit about the only way to survive facing the Reavers is to become them. Very eerie and almost prophetic. I love Nathan's delivery in that speech, and how he knows more about the Reavers then one might glean merely from bar hopping stories with scared drunks. There's back story unexplored regarding Mal and Reavers. Perhaps it's for the best. Anyway. Great episode. Deserves more love than it gets. Thanks guys for doing your part to change that.
